Shouldn't someone with the drive and determination to get to the majors in the first place not need the external motivation from the manager to try at a baseline level? Understand that they're playing for their next opportunity and that everyone around the league is watching?  I know Rocco is some juicy low-hanging fruit, but aren't professional players responsible for their own actions at some point?

Yes they are. But again, some players can use these situations to learn and never do it again. Even major leaguers can use an attitude adjustment sometimes

Well I would.

A major league career would be worth fighting for. With every fiber of my being.

I would too. But some guys need a shove

These players get paid to play baseball , if they don't play baseball  they should be fined on plays like outman  did ...

Or he should be back down in AAA working on his game , would he of beat the throw on strike three passed ball i don't know , he didn't make an effort ...

What a crock ...

I mean ... he's 28.  If he needs that level of babysitting at this point, he doesn't need to be here

Sorta what I said. :)

In addition to which, I'd think it would be something a good manager would demand.

Didn't take Outman long to learn Rocco is a joke manager and minimal/no effort is AOK

I once saw video of Bobby cox pull andruw jones out of a game in the middle of the inning for dogging after a ball, he was far more talented than outman

Sorry wasn't clear, I was trying to add on to what you were saying, not push back against it.

I think we can expect players to act like professionals independent of the manager.  Not everything has to be blamed on him.  There's already enough legitimately put on him.

Rocco's correct.

If only there was some person responsible for stuff like that. A person--say a guy in charge of team play...a guy to manage all this--who could emphasize these kinds of things. Maybe teach them. Heck, even notice them before say, 7 years go by.

Alas, there's just nothing that can be done

Exactly my point, it's mid-August, and he finally gets we need to be better and more aggressive on the base paths.....  kind of think these are supposedly MLB caliber players, how about being smart on the bases and operate within your limits. This isn't rocket science.

Jones had just turned 21 when that happened.

I'm not saying managers shouldn't hold players accountable.  I'm saying players are ultimately responsible for their own actions, and dumping it all on the manager every time absolves players of their personal accountability.   A 21 year old doing it should be benched - Cox did the right thing.  a 28 year old fringe player doing it should be DFA'd

I guess this is one of those "matching T-shirts in the upper deck" days that doesn't necessarily translate to TV

Yeah, marketing starts calling kids' clubs about two weeks in advance and out they come

Well just have to disagree. It’s not really about outman or any individual player. Every successful organization in sports or business or whatever, has someone or some people enforcing expectations or standards/practices. Clearly the twins don’t have that and haven’t for years. Clearly the players haven’t done that to this point either as referenced by their own comments, and the only one who ostensibly tried to, got shipped out of town and now “everyone can relax”, whatever that means.

That's what some of us are afraid of.

Baldelli will be the scapegoat at the end of the year. Falvey will never be the fall guy. Minority owners will squeeze for some accountability and "poor-pirate-beard" will be it,

I don't know if we're disagreeing as much as making two different points.  I agree with you in general.  Rocco's ship has been too loose for some time and no one wants him back.  Just saying that if someone in Outman's position can't be internally motivated, then they really don't need to be here

You would think getting swept by the A’s is rock bottom. But it can get way worse than this for the remaining games. 95 losses is definitely in reach

Gets worse starting tomorrow and the CHISOX sweep begins
