If you make any move toward second you are in play. Ump called it very tight but Jeffers should know better.

11) He fails to return at once to first base after overrunning or oversliding that base. If he attempts to run to second he is out when tagged. If, after overrunning or oversliding first base he starts toward the dugout, or toward his position, and fails to return to first base at once, he is out, on appeal, when he or the base is tagged;

Rule 5.09(b)(11) Comment: Runner who touches first base in overrunning and is declared safe by the umpire has, within the intent of Rule 5.08(a) "reached first base" and any run which scores on such a play counts, even though the runner subsequently becomes the third out for failure to return “at once,” as covered in Rule 5.09(b)(11).

Back to AAA with this 1B umpire

Jeffers error, he had plenty time to get back to first base and did not.

Well the Tigers catcher noticed immediately so there were some players alert enough to know the rule. Jeffers screwed up - it ain’t the umps fault.

I would agree, he called it very tight but rulebook correct.

However, speaking from lots of unfortunate experience, when you either bone a call or make a tight but right controversial call your odds of boning another skyrocket.

He never made a move toward 2nd . He turned around the wrong way. In his mind he had no reason to get back. If Conger thought he needed to get back fast, he would have been yelling at him to get back

Another Margot defensive masterclass

He lost it in the lights, similar to Buxton losing it in the sun the other day,

It’s funny how everyone forgets how to use signs once the pitch com goes out. Who knows what they did for the first 150ish years of baseball

He did. He made a small but quick move towards second.

He did but he shouldn't have had to.  I don't know how an umpire makes a judgment that his right step was a feint toward 2nd base.  In my experiences, a runner knows if he makes a jab toward 2nd and he'll get back quick if there's any question.

The move he made was big enough the Detroit catcher saw and he was thrown out, Jeffers fault.

That's not the rule though.
