DeSclafani was only available for $4M because of the heightened injury risk. I still am skeptical that he will get through even the first quarter of the season, but I think that if he does, he’ll be a steal for what the Twins are paying him.

I'm not sure I have much hope for meaningful production from DeSclafani even if healthy, but his 4M is half what they paid J.A. Happ so if we set the bar there, he should be able to clear that blindfolded and on roller skates.

Nobody really thought they were ever getting a quality starter for Polo did they? ( I will always love Jorge Polanco).  Disco is a veteran depth flyer who costs the Twins relatively nothing. Getting, say, 100 innings out of Desclafani is the fricken cherry on top. They dumped Polo's salary and cleared the way for the French batting savant/coffee cup holder.

I don't know, do the Giants and Mariners really pay 3/4ths of his salary if he has any value?

Seems like the Twins were trying to get an actual pitcher for Polanco, but when they got rejected, they just grabbed the miscellaneous party favor bag on the way out instead.

I don't think he has much (if any) value either but clearly the Twins do/did if they're slotting him into the opening day rotation.

Well it was either him or a rookie at this point and the rookie can be stashed. Obviously they 'value' everyone they pay a salary to, but I'm not sure that they value him with any significance. Even with less depth than the offensive side, I'd bet DeSclafani has a shorter leash than Santana and Margot.

Sure, but I agree with what you said upthread, go sign the AAAA or high injury risk guy to a MiLB deal and stash them. Instead, this FO gave DeSclafani, who has no options, a spot in the rotation and bumped somebody with a higher floor and possibly a higher ceiling. I think DeSclafani likely is a spare part, but it's hard to argue the Twins viewed him as just some throw in when they're going out of their way to make room for him.  As for the leash, who knows? There are plenty of recent examples where guys overstayed their welcome.

I completely agree and I really hate that philosophy.

However, the leash does seem to be equivalent to the salary paid, which in this case is fairly minimal. Matt Shoemaker and his 2M salary was the only guy on a MLB contract that I recall being released. I'm confident I won't like the leash DeSclafani gets, but I'd bet it's less than the other new guys they paid more. And really a pitcher who's giving up 5+ runs an outing stands out as a failure way more than someone who's not hitting but being shrouded by eight other batters.

Good lord, did I just suggest 4M was minimal. Sometimes I hate this world.

No need to jump the gun on predictions. DeScla is throwing right now and five weeks is still a long ways off.

Don’t really care if he’s not ready until May 15……;would be nice to get 80 innings in ‘24 at some point though.

Scouting reports say he's a one-dimensional player but I think this underrates him a bit.

Gotta say I think the guy is clearly 2 dimensional, so that makes sense.

I'd say that's his ceiling though.

Desclafani's spring training ramp up has been delayed, seems like this almost always ends up getting worse or leading to TJ.

He looks pretty good in the Pen Friday afternoon! Doesn’t look like he’s throwing with any discomfort. He can hang in Florida a few extra weeks - no problem.

Meanwhile, Varland is pumping the gas, first world problems.

I'd say you have that 100 percent wrong.

Polanco was traded for the best starter they thought they could get.

The others were throw-ins, since the starter they were able to get is likely to suck.

The Polanco trade doesn't happen without the Twins getting a planned rotation piece.

Is it possible that Mariners don’t make this deal unless the Twins are willing to take on the 4 million and DeSclafani? Perhaps they had to add to the prospect mix so the Twins would take on that burden. He wasn’t likely to make the roster and they save 4 million.
