Does anyone know why Bert Blyleven doesn't travel to Detroit?

Speaking of Bert, did anyone catch the 20 minute sermon he gave to the fan who traded Hermann's HR ball for a Mauer autographed ball? He was just beside himself that the fan would have the nerve to ask for anything is return, he stayed on his high horse about how he, in his grand and classy way would have just graciously handed the ball over for nothing.

Big deal, the guy got a Mauer ball he probably gave to his kid or grandkid, get out of your Ivory tower you sanctimonious ass!

There.....done......thanks.

I like Bert, he isn't perfect but anytime you listen to someone for 3 hours a day 80 plus times a year of course you are going to get annoyed a bit, he's no Vin Scully, Dave Niehaus (RIP) or Steiner but he is better than a lot of alternatives.

I feel the people who constantly rip him and dick really need to get over theirselves and lighten up a bit.

You shouldn't ask for anything, more than likely the player would

Hook him up like they always do.

I'm a pretty light hearted guy and I got over myself at least 25 years ago but my wife wonders why I keep telling my computer to shut-up when I watch Twins games. It's like he's found an extra strong verbal laxitive this year in particular.

I agree and most of the complaints about them are accusing those two of being too homerish. The Twins are selling a product and trying to build a positive atmosphere. It may be quite obvisous propoganda, but they aren't going to hire Lenny Bruce to rip on the team.

That being said I also enjoy when TK or Smalley get a chance at the mike. Though if either of them were on 162 times we would likely start to hear the same old Twins back-patting schtick quite soon.

If you hate him so much then just watch the other teams feed? Or if you can't, just listen to the radio?

I have been watching the least amount Of twins games in a long time due to life stuff, I find Bert to be pretty awesome when you tune into 2 or so games a week.

I personally like Dick quite a bit, especially after getting to know him in person. He's a good guy. Bert is kinda like that one weird uncle, he's fun and quirky, but after too long starts to grate on you a bit. Having Dick as a stabilizing force and rotating in different guys to fill in for Bert on the road does kind of strike a nice balance. Personally, I think TK is way too stuck in "coach mode" when he's in the booth and I've made my feelings about Roy perfectly clear in another thread. I'd love to see some other guys from Twins past get a few turns in the booth, kind of like a tryout to see who could take over from Bert when he finally calls it quits.

I typically watch the other teams feed but am a sucker for punishment a lot. I usually watch the archived games later at night on MLBTV, due to life stuff, the radio feed doesn't sync well with recorded video........and then theres Gladden.

I think most people who have listened to alternatives around the league realize Blyleven is easily in the top half of all color guys.

If you don't mind listening to the same thing day in and day out.

What do you think happens with EVERY SINGLE OTHER TEAM? Even Vin Scully is the same thing day in and day out, he's just a pleasure. Your distinction is pretty irrelevant.

If you say so

Ha! No, I thought, maybe a month back, I heard them on air (dick and very) allude specifically to an incident that made him skip Detroit. Dick started to say something about it and Bert just ended the convo. It was weird.

There are plenty of painfully awkward analysts and color men. Surely most of you have had to listen to the White Sox Dyslexic Duo in the old days when the Twins were playing the White Sox but there was no regional coverage but the game was still on WGN.

Dick and Bert are pretty well respected in the industry Blyleven in particular regularly gets tabbed to be the color guy on Fox broadcasts of the Twins games.

They start to wear on me once in awhile also but that's due to repitition and reluctance to say anything negative about the team all while I'm internally cursing the product Terry Ryan gave us to watch. It's hard to fault them for that however, no team is going to hire scathing satirists to demean the brand.

Realistically I don't think we could expect a whole lot better.

Besides, the team doesn't care if you like them or not, if you're on this site you're probably already a die hard fan and give the Twins your attention regardless of TV personalities. The team cares if your mother and other casual fans watch, and your mother likes Dick. Bert too.

I was thinking the same thing, I love both of them.

growing up, my alltime fav is still WGNs Steve Stone/Harry Carey as they could be as big a cheerleaders as anyone, but wouldnt hesitate to criticize the team if they needed to.

Set my level for announcers pretty high.

Bert is now a Hall of Famer. It does take him to special events. Above and beyond signing at some town's local card store. I enjoy Smalley. I really like Ron Coomer with Dick. I always enjoyed Jim Kaat and wish we never lost him.
