Cleveland to change its name to Guardians

In this day and age it's extremely difficult to find a mascot name that is not in use elsewhere in professional or major college sports. Selecting a name in use elsewhere would involve lots of copyright infringement issues and so forth, which is why a completely new name is desirable for team ownership and management. This is how names such as MIghty Mussels and Wind Surge and the like come about. Given that constraint, Guardians is probably about the best--or least bad--that could be hoped for.

Or, you know, they could have paid the squatters for the naming rights to avoid calling themselves "Guardians"

Ownership can save money by keeping the ‘ians’ signage in their stadium and replace the ‘ind’ at the beginning.

Why not double down and send Chief Wahoo to wardrobe for some winged ears, a leafy crown and a toga? At least let him keep his sh!t-eatin' grin though.

Since Minnesota was populated with huge German population, not Scandinavian, the Twins should change their name to the Huns.😎

Since Minnesota is the state with the largest boat ownership per capita the Twins could change their name to Minnesota Boaters. Don't know if that would float though... PR people might have to stroke it a little to avoid a snag. Be a helluva anchor if it flops...

Here's hoping the domain rights alone cost them a Shane Bieber extension...

Here's an interesting read on MLB domain names from a few years ago (with a Twins twist!):

http://grantland.com/features/the-website-mlb-couldnt-buy/

The most recent purchase was $375k in 2015 for rangers.com -- I think even Cleveland could afford that. :) guardians.com is currently advertised for sale, even if the roller derby guys cling tightly to clevelandguardians.com

I wonder if these domains are slightly less valuable now too, if fewer people directly type addresses with more/easier search options available. (They all get redirected to MLB.com subdomains anyway.)
