Bandit34 Provisional Member Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 This series is ominous because now I just have to hope that someone beats the Yankees in the first round and we don't have to play them. We know we can beat the Astros and the A's aren't that bad of a matchup with us, but I just don't feel good about a matchup with the Yankees. If we are to have any hope of a championship we need our front office to support us.
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 How could anyone have known that Smeltzer actually knows how to pitch? Noone else in that dugout or bullpen knows how to pitch, so I suppose Baldelli just figured it can't get any better with anyone else. Great job by Smeltzer, though, in keeping us in a game that really looked like we were going to be embarrassed. I don't get how people continue to blame Baldelli for not having good options in his bulllpen and being forced to overuse his one good option and then falling back to bad options. He didn't build this bullpen. I'm almost certain he doesn't want this bullpen. I can't blame a manager for being reluctant to pull his starter because the only things behind him are recently called up rookies. What happens if Smeltzer goes 1.2 innings and gets killed after Baldelli pulls Odorizzi after 3.2 innings in a close game? What the hell does he do then? At least blame the right people for this cluster**** of a situation.

Certainly not ideal situation but one of those 3 (probably smeltzer) could have worn it for a few innings (kind of like littell in TB). I just didn’t like it so early but it probably wouldn’t have mattered anyway. Maybe a different scenario earlier in the year or if CLE wasn’t breathing down our necks.
MVP Nick Punto Verified Member Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 Oh I forgot....It was so nice of the Yankees to bring their own Umps with them...Will they be with them in the league playoffs?Don't they always?
Jham Verified Member Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 I was actually encouraged by this series. Yankees are good. We played right with them. For the most part we played bei well. If we play this well the rest of the year, we'll be just fine. *If we merely rose up for one series and still feel a little short, we may have issues. **Yankees usually have, and appeared actually to have another gear or two they can access away any time. So the series also may not have been as close as it looked...

You can't send Smeltzer out there for five innings if he's throwing 30 pitches an inning. It was a hard call but I can't blame Baldelli for leaning on Odorizzi in one game when pulling him could have led to disastrous results tomorrow and maybe the next day against a bad team. Again, blame the front office for putting Baldelli in the situation where he literally has one good reliever to get through a series facing possibly the best team in the American League.

Odorizzi has been pretty terrible for what seems like months. If that's the case then nobody would ever be brought in to the game except for rogers.
