Well, the obvious and only possible explanation is, we cleared the roster space because Bumgarner will join the Twins in Oakland.

Mejía is a lefty and the Twins could certainly use another left hander in their bullpen. 

 

The issue with this is in his career he doesn't carry traditional lefty vs lefty splits. He's been pretty comparable vs righties and lefties. They could use another lefty, but Blake Parker has been tougher on lefties than him. 

 

I think he's in an unfortunate time in the Twins window opening where his chance to figure it out as a reliever was earlier this season, and he just couldn't do it. At best he looks like another mid-tier middle reliever with no plus pitches or skills that can be used in any kind of specialized role. At worst he can do some serious damage to the games he pitches in with his walks and homers as we saw earlier this year. I'm sure they'll give him another look soon just because hes gotten minor league hitters out, but I'd have to guess that he's one of the first out the door if the front office pulls off a trade.

He's got stuff when healthy, I'd like to see him get a shot for the next three weeks or so, in whatever capacity is best for this year.....

If this was a right handed reliever, meh. Left handed? Oooh!

 

For example Cody Allen's FB spin rate this year is 89th percentile at a spin rate of 2460, Mejia's is 2569 this year at 2500 last year.

Odo to the DL. Once again, these things sort of have a way of working themselves out. Short term, happy to have the depth and he pitched pretty well! Life has a funny way of helping you out when you think everything's gone wrong and everything blows up in your face.
