Ken Giles, Will Smith, or Craig Kimbrel?

Of the 3 listed which would you rather choose the Twins pick up soon to get someone to handle closing duties.

Ken Giles can be controlled through 2021, Will Smith through 2020, and Kimbrel most likely will be trying to get at least 3 years.

not sure I'd want any of them being a closer. I'd prefer them to be used in the situation where it's needed most. And it's not really either/or. Kimbrell can be had for cash.

Will Smith is my first choice in a trade.

I'd prefer them both.

If I can only have one, Smith. Now I have two lefties for leverage, one to use late, one to use whenever.

Ideally, get Kimbrel now and Smith later when the price is (relatively) low. We're not in a hurry right now.

I'd take Kimbrel first since he wouldn't cost any prospects and the Twins have plenty of financial flexibility to sign him.

Obviously Kimbrel, but if we fail, instead of going straight after Giles or Smith next, I’d actually much rather pursue either Iglesias (previous interest), Doolittle, or Diaz.

Smith? But none of them are my top choices.

I’d like to try to get Amir Garrett, Rasiel Iglesias or Robert Stephenson. The Reds look like a team that thinks they’ll contend soon so normally wouldn’t move youngish controllable arms, but they have three such guys in the pen and other holes to fill, they might be open to moving one.

I’d like to get Roenis Elias as well. I really like the starter-turned-relievers a full season after their conversion. I’d do Ian Kennedy too, he should have been moved to the pen years ago, looks like it’s paying off. I’ve always had a thing for Daniel Hudson too, but at this point it’s more about hoping to finally hit on the arm talent than anything. Sean Doolittle isn’t a big arm, but he’s gotten it done in the NL and AL so I’d trust him.

If I could get some better anecdotes maybe I’d be OK with Giles, but man, this club seems pretty tight, I’d be worried he’s a clubhouse cancer.

I’d take Kimbrel on a 2 year+ deal, but not one year. With this much time off I think he’d be a liability.

Questions I never thought I'd ask 3 months ago:

Would signing Kimbrel for 2-3 years affect their ability to resign Odorizzi and/or Gibson. (Though I assume at least one of them walks.)

The Twins have Castro, Schoop, Odorizzi, Pineda, and Gibson coming off the books for a total of $41.125M. There is also $16.46M in dead money that is owed to Reed, Hughes, Morrison, and Santana this season. Add in the approximately $10M the team cut payroll and at the moment they have around $68M to work with next off-season and that assumes they don't raise the payroll beyond what they did in 2018. I think the Twins can afford Kimbrel while still having plenty left to re-sign Odorizzi and/or Gibson.

This isn't quite right. Giles is controlled through 2020, and Smith only through 2019 (this season).

When B-Ref says "Free Agent: 2021" as it does for Giles, that means 2021 is his first season as a free agent.
