not a terribly popular last name. Wonder if he's related to Mark Funderburk

There was a Funderburke with an "e" who played basketball at Ohio State...

Pretty uneventful draft, really. Larnach could be something special but the rest of these guys are pretty 'eh'. I was afraid this draft would be like the 2015 one and that's what it looks like. I wish they had reached for higher end talent that was available.

Losing that second round pick hurt.  If they had that pick they don't have to waste it on the catcher to try and save money instead they could have invested in some higher ceiling High school talent there.  I hope saving the money was worth it.

Maybe they can get something done on the trade market because I don't see them having much of a pool for international signings either.  Looks like a down year for talent acquisition.  Maybe next year will be better.

There may be a diamond or two in the rough.

We won't know anything for years, of course. Its the same in any draft year. The draft does feel rather "meh" to me. I think losing/trading 2 picks and picking 20th helps lead to that.

What I DID like was the number of catchers drafted. Sometimes you just need enough darts thrown at the board to see what hits. Falvey did comment during the game tonight they really like Jeffers behind the plate.

The other thing I liked is there seemed to be some sleepers here, especially on the mound. There seems to be a number of guys who spent last season coming off injury and could have decent ceilings 100%, and a few guys who were transitioning to positions, or as a SP in college, who might be better back in the pen.

The thing I find interesting about some of these catchers is the possibility they may be useful even if they don't stick behind the plate. Most amateur catchers either have to stay at the position or find a new profession.

The Twins scooped up a bunch of guys who can hit and also just so happen to also be catchers. It's an interesting strategy, though obviously all of these guys face crazy long odds of making it.

Some intriguing names picked by the Twins.  Day 3 has historically been a bit of a crapshot for them though.

Going back the last 10 years, I could only find 5 guys they have drafted that on day 3 (rounds 11+) that have made it up to the Twins.

Trevor Hildenberger - 2014 - Round 22
Zack Granite - 2013 - Round 14
Taylor Rogers - 2012 -  Round 11
Ryan O'Rourke - 2010 - Round 13
Michael Tonkin - 2008 - Round 30

Am I missing anyone?

Andrew, Thanks for putting all the information together on the draft picks.  I know I really appreciate knowing a little background on the players we drafted.

Every year I hope they all make it but I know typically only one or two or maybe three will make it and sometimes no one will.  Here's hoping these guys find a way to be better than the rest.

How could you forget A.J Achter?  The diamond in the rough they drafted in the 46th round of the 2010 draft.  He gave us 18 'strong' games across 2 seasons.  :-)

Your point still stands.  But I do think its a crapshoot for almost all teams.  And you also have to weigh quality of ML contributors vs. quantity.

1 small example would be the Yankees...they had more players drafted(+11 rounds) who contributed in the majors, but only had 1(David Phelps) who had a WAR above 1.6.  Whereas Twins had 2 (Hildenburger- 1.6 & Rogers- 1.8).

For comparison sake, I long think of STL as having one of best player development systems and they only had 6 players with a +1.6 WAR over that same span...but managed to pull some higher quality from their 6(Carpenter-22, Rosenthal-5.8, Adams-6.1 Siegrist- 4.4, etc.)

The Twins haven't found that diamond in the rough that can cover for a bad 1st round or 2nd round pick in a draft year.

St. Louis has the all time best day 3 pick... some guy named Pujols that was drafted in the 13th round.

These guys certainly are all long shots on Day 3, but a ten year history is really only a seven year history or so because no player from any round has made the MLB team from the past three drafts.

If you go from 2005-2014 you get to add Valnecia, Manship, Slama, Burnett, Tosoni. Day 3 picks seem to average about one MLB player a year.

Not to speak of the quality of that player.

Luke Ritter and Zach Thomas look intriguing. I wonder if we can get them to sign. I liked the strategy of going after college players in top conferences. That seemed to be a theme in this draft. With the previous brain trust there seemed to be a lot of college picks from mid-major conferences. There is an ocean of talent between the lower end division one conferences and the SEC, ACC, and Pac12s of the world- which are almost like glorified minor leagues.

That's been one of the tricks the Cardinals have used over the years. Draft a lot of college players from tough conferences. You won't get a lot of stars doing that, but you should end up with serviceable major leaguers.
