Gordon Beckham was once one of the best prospects in the game.  #8 pick in the 2008 draft. Never really amounted to anything much more than roster filler.

There ya go.  It worked.  I trust Odorizzi's formula. Learn to accept the 5 to 6 innings.  Let him use lots of pitches and accept him for what he is.  He's got the formula to make it work.   With a guy on 2nd, nibbling and forcing guys to get themselves out works.  He'll get outs...and there might be a walk that puts another guy on base somewhere in there but that sets up the force.  Sometimes it won't work, but more often than not it will. 

 

I prefer bringing in relievers with clean innings.  Bring in the reliever in that situation if Odorizzi give up a run...not before.  Again it won't always work, but I believe that's the best way to approach things.  

 

That formula I've outlined might not be an ace, but we don't need Odorizzi to be an ace.  If those are the kinds of outings you get from your 4th and 5th starters you'll either be winning or in a position to compete to win in just about every game.  If your 4th and 5th starters consistently put you in that situation--you're gonna be a really good team.
