Mark Appel leaving baseball

Rough. He'll be trying to go to business school. Originally, he was drafted 8th overall and the Pirates could only give him a bonus of something like 1.5m or so. He held out and went #1 the next year and got something closer to 6m, IIRC. At the time, a lot of people said his agent, Scott Boras, was hurting him and he should take the Pirates money and cash in on free agency earlier. Looks like Boras was right and was looking out for his clients' best interests.

Appel will be only the third #1 overall pick to not make the majors. Best of luck to him.

This guy was touted as one of the biggest "sure things" out there. Crazy game.

This draft looks like a crap shoot all the way down until you hit Judge at 32. Frazier maybe, Gray you could argue but no real star power before Judge.

Should make us feel a bit better about our rough go with Stewart?

(Disclosure: my New Year's resolution was to be more "glass half full")

I think Kris Bryant has turned out okay. :)

Fair, missed him. 2/32 still seems like a fairly crappy draft though.... right? I know there is more time for these guys but seems a bit light. Or maybe because 2012 was just a really good draft. I dunno, Im just spewing non-sense.

2011 was pretty nice year as well. 2013 & 2014 seem to be duds other than a couple stars

Interesting stat that Appel is only the 3rd player not to get a cup of coffee in the majors drafted #1 overall.

I assumed there would be five times that amount over course of MLB history.

Part of that could also be the money involved and invested in many of these players.   I can imagine the parent organization trying to maximize what that.

I think it is fair to say that the college players (outside of Bryant, Judge and Gray) have been extremely crappy. But it is a little too early to write off the HS set. There may not be many stars in the group, but Frazier, Meadows, Smith, McGuire and Crawford all still have potential to end up as solid contributors.

Cody Bellinger was an ok pick in 2013.   It is still very early to judge those drafts.  Give them 10 years so the 18 year olds drafted would be 28...

I can't tell a lie, I was excited when the Twins drafted Buxton, but I was hoping it was going to be Appel.

I can. I knew Appel would be a bum from the beginning.

He didn't ditch the Twins for A&M yet (unless I missed something), so he still could flip the switch and turn into a pitcher.

Stewart, Romero, Gonsalves and Graterol in a couple years to join Berrios.... let’s go!!! What will we do with 5 aces? Who pitches game 1 in the WS?

The way baseball is going probably all of them. By that time we'll have 20 man staffs and roster sizes of 30 with one bench player.
