BlackJackMorris Provisional Member Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 Twins are in the playoffs. Call me a homer, but I believe in evening out/karma. I got a pretty good feeling we are gonna be playing in the ALDS. Enjoy the ride...
Pius Jefferson Verified Member Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 Angels vs White Sox for the next four games ... Twins vs Indians Twins are pitching Colon and Meija to start the series. Who is going to be the first to quote Gary Gaetti about playing for a championship in Cleveland? White Sox have more fight than some other teams.
Doomtints Verified Member Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 Remember when everyone thought 86 wins might be needed to get the 2nd spot. I thought it was 84, and even that was looking to be too high.
Dantes929 Verified Member Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 I thought it was 84, and even that was looking to be too high. With over 20 games left I said I would bank 85 if given the chance but that 84 or even 83 might be enough. This was when all the contenders had had winning records over their last 10 games and it was looking like maybe 1 or more might get hot. Of course the final chapter on the season has not been written. What the Twins have done has not surprised me at all, but to this point I am surprised at how poorly the contenders have done. Not surprised by any of them in and of itself but collectively. When you win a few games in a row you expect to keep up with one or two and gain on one or two but it seems like we are gaining a game on every one every time we win. KOW, KOW, KOW.
Face The Facts Provisional Member Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 We'll either make it or suffer from a Top 10 collapse all-time. Either way we have something going for us.
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 I thought it was 84, and even that was looking to be too high.Yeah, but it required some weirdness for that to come about. Out of the second WC contenders, the Twins have the high water mark at 5-5 over their past ten games. Every other team is between 4-6 and 2-8. Which isn't that strange until you realize there are six teams that have played sub-.500 ball down the stretch. The logistics of that even happening are impressive. Each team needed to split any head-to-head games they had and then lose damned near every game they played against a non-WC team. All at the same time.

True, but don't forget these were all .500 teams to start with, at best. It wasn't illogical to think they would finish at or just below .500 too.

The AL has two dominant teams that hogged all the wins, two second-tier postseason teams and a whole bunch of middling teams. You can call it parity or you can call it mediocrity and you'd be right either way. Whoever winds up with the second WC berth earns the title of least mediocre of the mediocre.

Out of six teams, the majority of the time one or two of them will be .500 or better over a short stretch.

Out of six teams, the majority of the time one or two of them will be .500 or better over a short stretch. Provided the other teams don't throw in the towel now that it's hopeless for them, they could still end up going .500 over the final 10 games. The Twins still have a chance of going .500 or less as well over the final 10.
AlwaysinModeration Verified Member Posted September 26, 2017 Posted September 26, 2017 Anyone else drawing the same conclusion that none of the other teams are interested in winning the second wild card?
stringer bell Verified Member Posted September 26, 2017 Posted September 26, 2017 Angels just lost to the Pale Hose. Magic number is now 2, technically both the Angels and Rangers have that chance, but Texas is getting pounded 11-2. Even though the Twins might not win a game in Cleveland, I think they come home with the second wild card.

The Angels, 3-7 over their last 10 games, would have to go 5-1 just to force a game 163. The other non-eliminated teams would have to go 6-0 over that same stretch.

And don't forget, the Indians were one of those mediocre teams for a while. Anything can happen this year.
