DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2017 Posted August 9, 2017 They absolutely should be looking at bullpen arms.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2017 Posted August 9, 2017 no. I don't think they will be buying.

Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2017 Posted August 9, 2017 Here's MLBTR keeping track of players who have cleared waivers: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/08/players-that-have-cleared-revocable-waivers.html Only reliever right now is AJ Ramos, and no realistic SP yet. MLBTR had another article about the Braves putting Jim Johnson and R.A. Dickey on waivers, and I didn't hear about a claim on them yet, so perhaps the above list needs an update?
drjim Provisional Member Posted August 9, 2017 Posted August 9, 2017 They absolutely should add a bullpen arm (or two), I wonder if they have the guts to do it.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2017 Posted August 9, 2017 They absolutely should add a bullpen arm (or two), I wonder if they have the guts to do it. It would create interesting discussions around the league, I'd think, and elsewhere, about their decisiveness.
Blackjack Provisional Member Posted August 9, 2017 Posted August 9, 2017 My first reaction is absolutely not!!! Let the young players play, especially the bullpen guys. They need to see what they have. Yet on the other hand, its beneficial for all of the young players, both position and pitching wise, to learn how to win. Let August play out, one week of good play doesn't mean much.

Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2017 Posted August 9, 2017 Well there you go our new closer? yes, meaning he passed through waivers without anyone claiming him. No one wants that albatross contract without getting a discount.

Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2017 Posted August 9, 2017 yes, meaning he passed through waivers without anyone claiming him. No one wants that albatross contract without getting a discount. With Verlander, the salary is part of it. But he also has a full no-trade clause, which means he can refuse any waiver claim as well as any trade. But I also don't think the Tigers are going to give him up for nothing, unless they knew he was hurt (and teams don't get to review medicals before making a waiver claim). Assuming he's healthy, the Tigers would probably want to eat some salary and get good prospects in return right now. If not, they can hold on to him and try again next year (competing themselves and/or shopping Verlander again).

Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2017 Posted August 9, 2017 There is an article on FG (and lots of comments) on trading Verland, btw...
VirginSturgeon Provisional Member Posted August 9, 2017 Posted August 9, 2017 There is no doubt I would make a call on Verlander and see how much salary they would eat and what their demands were for prospects. He would definitely upgrade the rotation and we have Mauer's salary coming off the books next year. Would probably be safer than giving Arrieta a huge contract. Summer is so much more enjoyable when the Twins are relevant in August!
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted August 9, 2017 Posted August 9, 2017 Purge what you can from the 40 man, call up some young arms, and let it fly. If they make the postseason, great. If they don't, oh well, it was probably fun to watch anyway.

Taildragger8791 Verified Member Posted August 9, 2017 Posted August 9, 2017 We can trade Reed, Slegers Curtis and Garver and anybody else we don't plan on calling up I don't really get the angst about anyone on the list other than Garver. Reed has had health problems and still hasn't been able to pitch on consecutive days this year. Curtiss has moved really quick through the system for a 6th round pick, getting through 7 levels in less than 3 years of playing time. Slegers is basically a non-prospect. The Garver thing is frustrating and inexplicable, other than he won't get any catching time in MLB with Gimenez around. I won't get upset about the others until September passes by.
rghrbek Verified Member Posted August 9, 2017 Posted August 9, 2017 They made multiple trades based on one bad week of play leading up to the deadline...One bad week,? They were 10-15 in July (when it mattered before deadline) and and slightly under .500 in June. With their disparaging run differential, and their youth, I think it was wise to sell marginal players for youth. I also think it's incredible how up and down we in this forum get after every win or loss (I know I shouldn't be as I've been on this forum for a while). We are buyers now? Crazy. Do we really think this team is going to hit to cover up for our terrible pitching? I don't. I would like it if they did.

The FO seemed to believe that something changed in that week, even if you disagree.

I won't get upset about the others until September passes by.Garver will get his chance. It just shows that they really like Gimenez as the backup, probably more for his intangible leadership skills, more than his physical skills. I'll bet Mikes monthly salary that Garver will be up before the end of the year. Does a few weeks sooner really make any difference???
Respy Provisional Member Posted August 9, 2017 Posted August 9, 2017 Someone should do a chart of keywords "Twins"/"Buy" and "Twins"/"Sell" on Twitter or TD the last month to see what the rollercoaster looks like. It'll be like the High Roller at ValleyFair... Up-down-up-down-up-down with a few small thrills in-between.
howieramone2 Verified Member Posted August 9, 2017 Posted August 9, 2017 Much ado about nothing. They traded what one member called a pig with lipstick to the Yankees for 2 pitching prospects. In the other 2 trades, they moved 2 board scapegoats for 2 additional pitching prospects. We net 4 total pitching prospects, 3 of which are lefties, which is signficant, and are still in the hunt. The big news is we didn't have to move the Romero, Jorge, Gonsalves, Stewart, or Thorpe-types.
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted August 9, 2017 Posted August 9, 2017 I don't think the Twins should be buyers at this point, but I think they should definitely be spoilers any way they can,
