Predict Bartolo's Number of Innings!

I think you are half right.

Vargas optioned, Hughes 60-day DL and Breslow activated.

If they outrighted Gee, then they couldn't place Hughes on the 60-day DL.

Per Mike Berardino on Twitter:

"Source w/direct knowledge confirms Dillon Gee was placed on outright waivers to make room for Colon on 40-man roster."

Breslow took Vargas' place on the roster.

It is my understanding that you can only place someone on the 60-day if your 40-man roster is full and you have to replace that player on the 40 man immediately.  If Gee was outrighted then by MLB rules Hughes couldn't be placed on the 60-day DL as the 40-man roster would have a open slot.

I've also seen the reports that Gee was outrighted to make room for Gee.  But the official report is that Hughes was placed on the 60-dl to make room for Colon and Vargas was optioned to make room for Breslow.

I think the original plan was to outright Gee, but the medical issue with Hughes change things.

I'm pretty sure the Hughes thing didnt just catch them off guard today?? Pretty sure they have been planning this one. But if that were true, could you imagine the conversation??

"Hey Dillon, come on in and close the door. Oh by the way, that thing where we placed you on waivers, well that was all just a joke. Oh actually, we are hamstrung with this 40 man rule that says we have to keep you now that we DLed Phil, so congratulations, you're back in AAA."

Dillon, "yeah? F you guys"

Couldn't they transfer Hughes to the 60 day DL BEFORE they outright Gee? That would mean the 40 man was full at the time of the move.

The Twins would still have needed to add someone to the 40 man immediately. Who? The only nominal candidates right now would be Tonkin or Rucinski.

Colon.

In chronological order:

1) 60 day DL Hughes.

2) Add Colon to 40 and 25.

3) Option Vargas.

4) Activate Breslow.

5) Outright Gee.

That satisfies any procedural rules, does it not?

Big Sexy goes 2.2 tonight, giving up 6 Earned Runs. Two home runs (but he baffles Aaron Judge). Bartolo gets DFA and retires.

Colon wouldn't have signed here if there was any chance he was going to be cut after one start, regardless of how that one start goes. (In my opinion, of course.)

Perhaps. But what would be the reason to outright Gee? Not saying it couldn't be done, but why do it?

Apparently Gee was not outrighted after all. Colon replaces Hughes and Breslow replaces Vargas.

Thad Levine calls Gee into his office, then the phone rings. It's Falvey telling him they just put Hughes on the 60-day. Levine has to switch gears quickly and says the first thing that comes into his head.post-3240-0-00548300-1500418176.jpg

I don't think he gets out of the second inning.  Twins get crushed.  Lose tomorrow due to a depleted bullpen.

This is/will be/was a dumb move.   Good thing Phish is webcasting tonight.

Correct, and it appears he wasn't.

I was just brainstorming in response to the guy saying it couldn't be done.

In all reality the front office should give two ****s what his reason for signing was. The Twins are in contention for a playoff spot and there should be no reason to give grace starts because the guy is a veteran.

Sure, I would agree, but that means don't sign him. Promising something and not delivering is bad business, and Colon would have certainly wanted assurance he'd get a legit shot (which like it or hate it, a 1 start sample is not) before signing over the Mets.

Now that the deal has been done he's getting a few starts, minimum.

Again, all my opinion.

You're right.  My post wasn't targeted at you.  I'm just extremely frustrated with this move.

Well, it could have been worse.   I'm just glad I won't see him next Wednesday when I see our squad vs. the Dodgers.   Colon will make at least two more starts, and probably earned that  short lengthening of the leash last night.
