Twins buyers for long term assets at the trade deadline

Last week an SI writer suggested the Twins could trade their center fielder (Buxton) for pitching. I wonder if a team like the Mets or Giants would be interested.

Third time's the charm?

I don't know about this. I would hold on to Buxton to the bitter end. I do wonder if either of those teams might want Rosario. Giants seem like an especially good fit and would be willing to move a starter. A reload for them too.

If the Twins are not selling off veterans, I would look to add young pitchers with multiple years of control who possibly have good stuff but are having a tough year this year. Kevin Gausman is someone I'd target, but I don't know if he is gettable. But then again, even with a 6 era this year, his fastball velocity hasn't dipped at all, and I think could be a buy low if Baltimore is willing to talk. I could also see trying to talk to the Giants about Matt Moore or Jeff Samardzjia. Maybe even Tyler Anderson of the Rockies?

If they are willing to trade their veterans (still 2 months to see where they are at) I'm not certain the Twins will find a taker for Dozier. I do think Ervin will get some solid offers if the Twins want to listen, but it all comes down to what they see as a fair offer for him. I LOVE some prospects in the Yankees system, as well as the Astros, but who knows where they will be in the standings come the end of July.

I agree with that position.  I think that the Twins this deadline should be "flippers".  Flipping older assets for younger who can contribute wright away.  Ervin Santana is one of them.  He could potentially help a young club like Colorado, and the Twins can have a package anchored by someone like Jeff Hoffman with 4 years of club control who is their 4th starter, has phenomenal numbers outside Coors and might even perform better than Santana down the line for the Twins.

Same with Dozier.  Knock at the Dodgers door again and see if you can have someone like Brock Stewart or Scott Barlow along with someone like Joe Broussard, who could plug in the Twins rotation and pen right away.  Throw in Hector Santiago if you have too, he is someone the Dodgers can use as a back of the rotation insurance.

These are the type of deals they should be making, other than potentially going for a younger Ace like Archer.  I would not put Cole or Grey in that category, but I wouldn't mind sending 3-4 prospects (everyone other than Romero & Gordon - who should be Dozier's replacement should be touchable) Tampa's way for Archer

I just don't see a match to trade Dozier. I understand it makes the most sense to trade him and keep Gordon. The 2B market just isn't there as we saw this offseason. At least Gordon can still project as a SS right now, and is a top 50 prospect in the MLB.

It would suck losing him, but now may be the right time to sell him for an established MLB SP with multiple years of control.

What excites me going into this trade time is the Cole Hamels trade from a few years ago.  If memory serves correctly, people did not see TX as a definite buying team or selling team at that time.  They opted to buy and the targeted a guy who had that year and 2 more left on his contract.  Levine would have been right in the middle of that.  That is the type of move I hope they can make.

Surely this was mentioned before and I missed it.  If so, sorry for the repeat.

Pretty sure to buy meaningful long-term assets, we'd have to trade some of our future, no? Doubtful that we're getting Gray or Cole or whomever with scraps...

If Gray could be had for Gordon and Gonsalves, I'd do that trade for sure.

My problem is that Beane may ask for more. At that point, I'd have to hesitate.

Nick Gordon is a pretty attractive trade chip.

But are the Twins comfortable with Escobar and Polanco for the moment.

What to do with Dozier.

Do you put stock in Gordon, or hope that Javier or Lewis are the next best thing.

Wish they actually had the ability to trade any of those high draft pick pitchers: Reed, Burdi, Stewart et al.

But most coming off injury, and those that seem healthy, you hope they can give you the bullpen you'll need.

Teams spend a lot of money drafting players. How many work out. Do you egt value if you trade high draft picks (you do, if they don't work out and another team gives you something FOR THE NOW in return.

Were no another team looking to trade with the Twins, I'd be looking at Rosario and one of Romero or Gonsalvez as my starting point. If also be looking hard at Gordon.

The potential problem of dealing Gordon is you then have to commit to Dozier. Not saying that is a bad thing, but a must. Polanco is good and going to get better. I like both Escobar and Adrianza, but like them best in the roles they occupy now. Vienna has a chance, but the other infield prospects are down in the low minors. Perhaps one of them might be included in place of Gordon?

And while I'm not calling for a trade of Dozier at all, what if he were moved, along with keeping Gordon, for prospects to be included in a deal, or to return a couple prospects to replace those traded?

To get something meaningful, yeah, Dozier+Gordon is a starting point for "something meaningful +1 or 2".

Really? I think that is what Beane would ask for but I'm not sure Gray is all that great anymore. He outperformed his FIP earlier in his career, and now he is under-performing it. Meanwhile, Sickels had Gordon and Gonsalves at 43 and 60 before the season (Gordon's probably risen a bit), both B+ with a 2018 ETA.

I think I would from casual observation. I've looked at Gray's numbers and O.co hasn't been a big boon to him, surprisingly.

But I don't believe I've actually watched him pitch this year so I'm just looking at a stat line.

If there are better targets out there than Gray, maybe I'd change my mind.

I'm probably more worried about the injuries than the performance going forward. Would be surprised if he has another full, healthy season the rest of his career.

There's a reason teams avoid short rhps.

I suspect Gordon has risen a lot, probably about #20 right now.

I suspect that he will be ranked below Royce Lewis

Possible, but I doubt it. Lewis will likely be around 30ish.

In any discussion on acquiring big league assets, I would think Byron Buxton should absolutely be in play.

Buxton has more skills than GoGo or Hicks and look how that turned out? There are very few pitchers in the whole major leagues I would trade for Buxton even straight up.

straight up? No. For the right price anyone including Buxton should be available.
