Rate (in your opinion) the best 3 current pitchers at the Twins in order...1 being the best and 3 the worst.

As a new fan I'm going to probably going to get this completely wrong in the eyes of most people but based on the games I've seen recently and some research here goes lol. The more opinions the better. Any extra details regarding your selections...even better....also feel free to take into account any injured players   :)

1. Ervin Santana

2. Phil Hughes

3. Jose Barrios

The Twins have three good pitchers?!

Ervin Santana is #1 for sure

Jose Berrios is #2 - mainly because I'm a glory boy and want him to do well

#3 is tough.... For me it's a toss up between Brandon Kintzler and Tyler Duffey.

Phil Hughes suffered a major injury last season that required surgery. I was not counting on him at all for this season, and though I admire his courage in coming back I have not felt comfortable with what he can produce when he takes the mound. My top 3 are:

1. Santana

2. Berrios

3. Mejia

These are the ones where I expect 5 (or more) good innings that keep the team in the ballgame.

None of the bullpen guys are lights-out enough for me to put them on a par with these 3 starters. They are all just "parts" that fit in with better pitchers (that we do not have) to man a good staff. Duffey is the one who could turn out to be better than that conservative view.

This would be exactly my ranking as well...

And this is exactly my opinion with Kinzler ranked 5th ATM. I do not know if we have a 6th pitcher that belongs on a winning team but we might... Some of them may pan out in time and if they were protected by better pitchers around them.

Have to agree on:

1) Santana

2) Berrios

3) Mejia

I also agree Duffey has the potential to take the 3 spot, but Mejia has room to grow and develop. And I believe he will.

Call me crazy, but in 10 days, (DL), Santiago could be #3. I understand the negatives, peripherals, inconsistency, etc. But we have seen in the past, for the Twins and other teams, what he can do. A 10 day stink to get his head back on straight could...hopefully...get him back on track.

Top 3 are easy

1 - Ervin

2 - Berrios

3 - Duffey -

Next 4 - nothing great but quality MLB pitchers

4 - Mejia - still not consistent enough but has looked good so far

5 - Kintzler

6 - Santiago

7 - Rogers

The rest are nothing special

Note - Breslow has been effective so far.

Santana

After that, Berrios and Mejia barely have more than a handful of starts, so to include them as #2 and #3 that would only be based on the last few weeks worth of work. Duffy at the end of the summer two years ago looked like an ace too. But now he looks like he has settled into a role where he has been successful. So I'd say

Santana

Duffy

Berrios based on potential

What's your rationale in placing Phil Hughes at #2? He hasn't had a good year since 2014, and he's been injured off and on the past 2 years.

1. Berrios

2. Santana

3. (tie) Duffey

3. (tie) Mejia

If Taylor Rogers can push his K rate up to where it was last year I believe he can be very effective.

I'm English and I looked at his experience etc :P

I generally agree with this and I also think these are really the only MLB quality pitchers presently on the roster with the possible inclusion of Breslow as a back end BP guy. When I say we have half a pitching staff, this is what i mean. We have a #2 and #3 starter in Santana and Berrios, a #5 in Mejia who could grow to a 3 or 4 over time, 3 mid bullpen/7th and 8th inning guys in Duffy, Rogers and Kintzler, and a guy who should be a #4 starter in Sanitago who is either hurt or mentally messed up.

Soooo, what are we missing?

Starters - A true Number 1 and a solid mid-rotation guy. Santiago could be the mid-rotation guy but that's looking less and less likely in the short term and this counts on Berrios and Mejia both succeeding. We really need 2 starters. Actually, we really need more because of injury. We need 6-7 competent starters in today's game.

Bullpen - A closer or high end lock down guy, one 7th/8th inning guy (you really need 3-4 of these guys), and 2 more competent mid inning/long man types.

And there's the rub. We only need a few pitchers but 2 of them are the hardest things to find - a true No. 1 starter and a true, high end lock down reliever. Having those guys are many times the difference between a "nice" team and a true contender. The good news is we are getting close. The bad news is that we don't appear to have the 2 most important pitchers in our system and they are more expensive that ownership has shown a willingness to go for.

Well they went out and spent money on Hughes, Nolasco, and Santana a few years ago, maybe now with Berrios, and Mejia developing hopefully with half a year of Trevor May next year maybe they can combine resources and go out and sign one big time pitcher instead of 3 average ones?? Pipe dream I know, but it is hopeful. Then if they can hit with the #1 pick this year where in 2 year or 3 they have someone else to bring in along with any surprises that happens, maybe a Turley or Gonslaves, etc... They need that one dude for the future of this lineup that is in place.

Adding may next year may solve the mid rotation piece with or without Santiago. I'd love to see the Twins sign a true #1 starter in the off season, but i just don't see it happening. There are some good potential FAs out here for after the season, Including Yu Darvish and Danny Duffy, but I just wonder of the Twins would open the checkbook for someone of that quality.

I totally agree with your sentiment.  My thing is that they opened the pocketbook for 3 average guys (Santana, Hughes, Nolasco), I mean what kind of a pitcher would their 3 salaries combined bring in, if they just open that thing up for one great one then with Berrios, Mejia, May, then fill in whoever comes along it looks like they have a fair chance with this current lineup.

Ranked by current and future contribution:

1. Berrios

2. Kyle Wright

3. Romero

3A. Mejia

3B. Santana

1. Jose Berrios
2. Tyller Duffey
3. Taylor Rogers

Has anyone checked Santana's FIP and K/BB lately?

I was tempted to put Berrios #1 on my list but I need to see a little more to say that he is actually this good RIGHT NOW. After all you said that Tepesch was better than Berrios a month ago.

Rogers concerns me for the same reasons that you mention Santana. He is a RP that doesn't strike many out. He has been good so far but could still go Pressly on us.
