GoDucks
1:06 Has David Peterson surpassed Seth Romero as the best college lefty available in the draft?

Eric A Longenhagen
1:07 After McKay, I assume? Probably depends on how clubs view Romero's off-field issues. On stuff? No.

If Romero falls to the Twins at the supplemental pick, he would be a steal.

I think he might though. Enough nitpicking on him (more floor than ceiling type, fitness, makeup), plus all those HS arms .... he's going to fall out of the top 20 and 35 isn't too far.

I still prefer Scherff over him, but I hope that the Twins get them both.

Video I took of Adell from the WWBA in October.  Kid reminds me alot of Buxton on the field, great athleticism and 5 tool potential but the hit tool is a little questionable.

More on Greene here - http://m.mlb.com/news/article/227892448/is-hunter-greene-the-best-high-school-rhp-ever/

Callis discusses if Greene is the best HS pitcher ever. Some think Beckett is still the best HS arm but they did compare Greene to some recent HS arms -

"Compared to prep right-handers from this decade, Greene has much better command than Riley Pint (No. 4 overall, 2016, Rockies), much more athleticism than Tyler Kolek (No. 2, 2014, Marlins) and Lucas Giolito (No. 16, 2012, Nationals) and a better delivery than Pint or Dylan Bundy (No. 4, 2011, Orioles). Some scouts will counter that Pint threw just as hard and had much better secondary pitches, and that Bundy was the most polished high school arm they've ever seen."

Did Longenhagen seem to say that both Greene and McKay are 60?

I've been hoping to see a writeup like this, as I've wanted someone to explain the case for Greene as a "generational talent." But frankly, this kind of leaves me underwhelmed.

we are still weeks from the draft (and some of these sites just finished their work on the ranking of current minor league players). I am anticipating we'll get more detailed analysis soon.

generational talent = click bait.

Nice work. I don't think Romero goes that high and I don't think the Twins would take two HS pitchers with their first two picks but nice read.  I'd be thrilled with Crouse at 35/37.

Romero and the Marlins are getting tied together a lot, but he's still getting a lot of attention in the 10-20 range of the draft.

Yeah, it's not something I think the Twins would do, but with the way the draft fell in this scenario, that was a really good fit for the Twins, though with 37 around the corner, they could secure a pretty solid upside bat with those two big arms, especially the way the college bats fell in this scenario (and they could use the savings on a college bat with 37 on securing Greene/Crouse financially).

He doesn't seem to be on the Twins radar for #1, and probably for good reason, but Jordon Adell is having a hell of a season.  He's ranked #22 on mlbpipeline but I believe he was higher on their initial list but failed to show a lot of power early on.  BA has him #14.

He's hitting .538/.640/1.436! with 21 home runs and only 7 strike outs against 25 walks.  A lot of the summer showcase articles about Greene also mentioned Adell.  BA had a nice article on him as well. He's a really great athlete.

I guess I don't want him at 1/1 but there's no way he'll fall to 35 either.  Seems like a fun draft prospect to watch.

Whoa whoa whoa, high school stats!?

Just kidding. I had looked for his stats a while back and came up empty so thank you for finding that. I'd definitely be interested in him at 1-1, esp. if he'd sign underslot. 6'3, 210, super athletic, the bat looks pretty special. Don't know what more you could want in a 1-1.

I know high school stats mean next to nothing but a 1.400+ slg percentage?  Holy cow. And the other article, about his conditioning and his older sister being a better athlete?  Bloodlines!

Well, you don't *know* that, because comprehensive high school stats don't exist.

Just like I don't know a 4-sigma player has a better chance at success than a 3-sigma player. Although has been proven to be the case when stats are comprehensive (the minors), so I strongly suspect there is a similar, if weaker, relationship at college and high school. Exactly how weak or strong the relationship is is unknown.

Addell's stats for sure are at least a 4-sigma (6 in 100,000) and maybe even a 4.5-sigma (3.4 in 1,000,000). Good enough to get a good look from every team drafting in the top 10 I would hope.

He's a guy I loved at 5 early in the process but fell off due to some swing and miss concerns, but he's really pushed his way back up the consideration. Not sure where he's going after top 5, if he doesn't go top 5, though.

Love it! If the draft went this way, who would you take at 37? I'd love it to be Clarke Schmidt

I think Schmidt will be an interesting target once you get past 15. I mentioned in the piece, but I have heard that the Nationals made a call or two to see about CBA picks, something new for them, but I could absolutely see them going after both South Carolina starters if they had their pick and a CBA pick, as that's a profile they target fairly early every year (not going to be surprised if they take Hunter Ruth 2nd round if they don't get a CBA as well).

At 37, I could see a number of routes, similar to how I looked at the pick for the Braves at 41. There is a group of high-ceiling high school hitters this year that would make perfect targets for teams willing to let them develop in the back of the first through the early 2nd round. Obviously there will be differing opinions with each org on each guy, but guys I'm intrigued by that could go in that range would include:

Catchers

Hagen Danner (also throwing very well off the mound)

Luis Campusano

MJ Melendez

Infielders

Mark Vientos

Brady McConnell

Ryan Vilade

Jeter Downs

Adam Hall

Outfielders

Bubba Thompson

Heliot Ramos

Quintin Holmes

Garrett Mitchell

Cole Brannen

Tristen Lutz

Jacob Pearson

Daniel Cabrera

Calvin Mitchell

Conner Uselton

I think with the Twins' dearth of middle infield guys, if they liked someone like McConnell, Downs, or Hall, they'd be excellent choices, but I think the higher ceilings are found in the outfielder group, where I could see a number of good fits with the Twins, especially if Kiriloff's elbow surgery will require him to move to 1B going forward.

Canning is looking pretty nice but another who is unlikely to fall to 35.

Canning is definitely a mid-first guy.

Romero returned to Houston this week and had some rust, but very good reports on his raw stuff. He could put up a strong finish to possibly be a top 10 consideration guy.

I'm a Houston fan and I'm afraid Romero is a huge headcase and I'd bet teams would be really reluctant to draft him. Apparently he was photographed in uniform with a bong which was one of the reasons for his suspension and he's openly rejected the coaching staff's conditioning efforts. Also his results really haven't matched his stuff so far this year. We will probably see a huge drop from him unless he somehow shows an ability to get his act together

I just know what scouts have told me. The one who saw him this weekend said his stuff was tremendous but raw.
