Very cool. I like 'buried treasure' like this. (Although finding gold would have been just as good.)

That is really cool. Nothing like history. And vermin.

Yeah, vermin.

 

And the story will continue. As it turns out, almost all of his family lived in the area and two of them are buried three blocks from my home. I'm still investigating a lot of stuff, as it's been unreasonably difficult to find information post-war, though all pre-war stuff is readily available for some reason.

The question is... What treasure are you going to store away for someone to find in 2086?

We're still figuring that out. We have to leave something, for sure.

 

My wife is arguing we should pack up the 1946 info and our 2016 info and put it back up there.

 

I'm arguing we should frame all the 1946 stuff, put a note on it that it's part of the house, and then put our 2016 stuff in the ceiling.

Same! Sadly the only 'buried treasure' in apartment life is when the last person forgets to change their forwarding address... Maybe that treasure is a 30% off Kohl's coupon!

Also, whoever in the future decides your kitchen design is inferior will find a cool surprise in the ceiling just like you. That's pretty neat!

It has crossed my mind more than once. If only our main living area didn't have rounded ceilings... no way can I replicate that work with sheet rock.

Good. It's not a real remodel until you at least fleetingly consider tearing up (or down) the rest of the house, regardless of whether buried treasure may be in play.

 

Thanks for the well-written documentary of your in-home adventure.  It was a fun read, and reminded me of treasure hunting in my oldest relatives' basements and attics as a little kid.  I remember being an especially proud kindergartner when showing my mom the bas relief art piece that I had found in my great aunt's basement and smoothed out somewhat by running it through "the squishing machine" - an ornate old art deco, hand cranked wringer-style clothing washer.

My house was built in 1963. All I found in the studs was an old rifle and some gibberish manifesto signed by a couple of guys going by LBJ and F. Castro.

We're still trying to track down what happened to them after the war. I know his brother stayed local - I found his grave yesterday - but the builder of the house moved about 50 miles north and died in 2001.

 

It's really weird. I can find census records from 1900-1940 but absolutely nothing after the war.

 

And that means I can't find the names of his children.

I don't know if this is their thing or not, but could the Historical Society help you out at all?

When we remodeled, all we found was the worst, most complicated, wiring ever, and a decision to use GLUE FROM HELL on the floors so we couldn't pull up the ugly wood they put on top of the beautiful wood.......I learned how to wire an entire house, but the flooring just made us sell (ok, that's not why we sold).

 

Good luck on the remodel, it's nice to get a new house w/o buying a new house.

All I've found of note in my house was a rusty putty knife (that I put to good use for nearly 3 years until it broke), and a sizable stash of 70's porn mags hiding above a ceiling that could be accessed from the unfinished utility room.
