I really have never known the Twins to carryover. The BIG QUESTION is how they will market the 2017 season to get some fans in the stands. Combine that with concessions and hits on TV and radio, the team could go leaner in the $$$ to spend department because they aren't competitive. After 2015, the Twins had a punt in their cash flow. Last season, they started to take a hit (not in tickets but in what non-attendees didn't spend by staying home or TV lost with non-viewers).

 

Their marketing basically died mid-season. Not sure what slogan they can develop this year.

The Cubs built through free agency and trades. The draft thing is a false narrative.

I started this thread so I will try and re-summarize my position.  I don't overly care if the payroll this year is under 100m or not.  But I do know that the Twins have the capacity to have a payroll pushing 110 or even 120m.  So, my issue is that I don't think ownership will push payroll OVER in the good years despite clearly saving money in the down years.  I admit, we don't yet know if that will happen but I think it will.  So I do think we should remember that the Twins didn't add payroll in certain years when the Twins start bitching about how they can't spend PAST a certain number.

Well, I'd say they have upgraded the team already with the Castro signing. Go with the young guys in the bullpen after that horrific contract the Cards gave to Cecil.

There is no reason to make assumptions about the future of this club based on the past. The new regime appears to actually want to work from a plan, rather than BS the fan base and be buddies with the Pohlads.

To be clear, I'm pursuing those 10 guys for the major league level.  I'm pursuing them because we have open jobs (SP, RP, C, and maybe OF) where we can offer playing time for a guy to rebuild his value.

 

Then we trade them.  But I'm not looking to add payroll because we had 103 losses and we have to do some token spending to appease the masses.  The "why" and the "who" are extremely important here.

 

Fair point, but some here still seem to be under the illusion that signing any FA now will have any impact on when this team is actually competitive again. Stricly indirectly via future flip as you say, and that is after they have figured out how to develop at least two or three of their own players, which will take 2-3 years at a minimum.

That's overplayed.  The Cubs got one really good pick.  The rest of their success is from landing a great manager and not being afraid to spend money.  The Cubs always had money (Cubs fans are truly a cult), they just weren't spending it like they should have been.

Pretty much.  They spent their money on the right players, although Jason Heyward might be the one hickup in everything right they've done there.

Some might say Schwarber and Baez are pretty good picks too.  Some good things are expected from Almora too, while Happ looks to be interesting too.

Actually, they misspent some dollars, too, but big payrolls are able to handle those misses better than other teams.
