Marte's not very good for sure.

Segura is incredibly talented, but he had injury and an incredible personal tragedy that really killed about a year and a half. He's a premium player for sure.

Yeah, it will be interesting to see how he does in Seattle. I'm a bit surprised that they were willing to move Walker without getting pitching back. As I was researching potential Dozier landing spots, Seattle did make my list (assumed moving Cano to 1B), and I did include Walker in the trade. But my thought was a Dozier/Santana package to help their rotation - even with Walker they are short on starters.

FWIW, my return package was Walker, one of Tyler O'Neil or Drew Jackson, and then one or two interesting low-A arms. In light of this Segura trade, that might might have been light (IMO, Dozier > Segura).

I think fangraphs article title nails this trade. the teams traded upside and downside.

I think Segura isn't quite as good as his 2013/2016 numbers but he certainly isn't as bad as the years when he dealt with injury and personal issues. Walker is unrealized potential. He could be awesome or...

I should also note, for any teams craving Dozier's 42 HR power, they can now have Chris Carter's 41 HR power for virtually nothing.

Of course, "virtually nothing" also describes what Chris Carter provides on a baseball field, aside from those HR. :)

Cubs just signed Jon Jay to a one-year contract. Surprised that they (evidently) didn't expect to retain Fowler, or at least to have a strong chance at keeping him.

I see it more that they believe they can Jay as a backup, but they also could have the idea to have him around as they give Almora the job.

The A's made a very A'sey signing today by getting Matt Joyce for 2 years and $11M. I'm surprised he got that much.

He bounced back from an awful 2015 to have a pretty solid 2016. His line was .242/.403/.463 (.866), but only had 293 PA.

Great platoon option, IIRC

It'll be interesting to see what they do with their surplus of outfielders.

They will make it work like they did last year.

So a few CBA highlights:

-World Series home field is no longer determined by All Star Game

-Teams no longer lose 1st rounder in QO system. They lose a 3rd rounder if under luxury tax a 2nd and 5th if over.

-Luxury tax goes up. will gradually raise to 210 million over next 5.

-Smokeless tobacco banned for all new major leaugers

-a cap of 6 million per year on international spending

-Disabled list goes from 15 days to 10

-4 more off days during season

Is it a hard cap on international spending? Or is it like before where the Dodgers, Yankees, and Red Sox could spend way above the cap and just pay a fine for doing so?

-World Series home field is no longer determined by All Star Game----I approve!

-Teams no longer lose 1st rounder in QO system. They lose a 3rd rounder if under luxury tax a 2nd and 5th if over.----good compromise, I guess. But, imo, the law of unintended consequences here is that the rich get richer, but the players get more, and that's more important, imo, so I approve!

-Luxury tax goes up. will gradually raise to 210 million over next 5.----I think the tax is silly, they really NEED revenue sharing. I am MEH on this.

-Smokeless tobacco banned for all new major leaugers----sigh, just ban it universally, like a real company. BAD, but progress I guess.

-a cap of 6 million per year on international spending----HATE THIS. All it does is screw the players out of money. But, hey, the billionaires got help. Viva America!

-Disabled list goes from 15 days to 10----hate this. I think.

-4 more off days during season---Love this, they need healthier, more well rested players.

Or Braves or other teams, this wasn't just done by the "wealthy".....

Maybe this is one step closer to a hard cap on all player spending and revenue sharing.

The sport really needs that.  (The cap should be high, though, and the revenue sharing completely equal)

I think I just read on FG that it is a hard cap on international spending.....that's A LOT of money now not going to poor people...with no other changes to help them out at all. A real loss for the workers...

Looking forward to articles 20 years from now detailing the career of the last player permitted to use the spitter. Somewhere, Burleigh Grimes will be smiling.

You say we need more healthy players, but you don't like the DL going down to 10 games?

Curious your reasoning for that.

A couple of former Twins sign minor league deals today...

Logan Schafer signed with the Orioles, and Chris Parmelee signed with the A's.

Ah, see, I was thinking backward! If that means it is easier to DL guys, great. What does it mean for guys that need to be out more than 10 days? That's where I got confused....

This number refers to the minimum stay required.

I'd like to see it even lower. 5 or 7 days.

Thanks, then I highly endorse this improvement, even if, like you, I'd like it to be shorter!

So, lots of good changes, with some very bad ones also....

I'm very surprised that the new CBA doesn't include a 26th player on the roster.

I would have expected the players to be big on this. It gives them the possibility to have more days off and increases their membership.

As am I.

Also, trading of draft picks....it costs no one anything really.

I think you might have that backwards. I'd think it would be the teams that would want that extra spot. I think that is something the players would fight.

Adding another roster spot could theoretically eat into the pie.

You have a few teams that would just add that much more payroll, but I think many more teams would budget less per spot so their payroll stays the same.

It's the players ALREADY in MLB that have the bargaining power- as shown by the unions continued indifference towards going to bat for minor leaguers. Adding another roster spot is akin to a minor pay raise to minor leaguers, it wouldn't be seen as much of a benefit to those already established in MLB. And, that raise comes out of the current MLB players pockets, not the owners.

Could they have Chris Davis be grandfathered into the no chew tobacco rule? Every time he comes to the plate it's distracting.... Like he put the whole can in his mouth prior to getting out of the dugout.
