Plouffe Down (Oblique)

I'm the first to say it on TD!

Rotoballer reports that Plouffe "Has Strained

Oblique, Could be Done for Season." He did it taking a hard cut at a pitch. As we know, he missed most of July and August after fracturing a rib. So Plouffe's season ends with 344 plate appearances in which he hit .260/.303/.420 - 12 HRs and 47 RBIs. OPS .723, right in line with his career average of .727.

While I'm sorry that his oblique muscle is hurting (I know from his experience that it hinders natural movement and can linger like hell), I never personally wrote home to anybody about Trevor Plouffe! I hope (this sounds so sinful) that it's the last we've heard of him in a Twins uniform. Please find a way to move on, new Twins GM.

Well, that's too bad. He's really been banged up this season - I think this might be the third time this year he'll hit the DL. I'm not sure if the Twins will be willing to pay Plouffe $9-10M next year when he's so injury prone.

Injured or not, I really don't care for how he just walked off the field last night, but that sure is a nice picture of his physique :)

Out of curiosity, what would you rather he had done?  Admittedly, I thought it odd too, but if you can't go you can't go.  No sense in curling up in the fetal position on the field.

Step back out of the box, take a breath or two, buy some time. Maybe try a light practice swing.

That's a shame for Plouffe. But, hopefully this opens up a ton of opportunity for Polanco/Sano and potentially Beresford for 3B reps the rest of the way.

Vargas too, with all the 1B reps that Plouffe has seen lately.

Fair enough.  I read in the Star Tribune I believe, that he tweaked it earlier in the game during an at bat.  He went below and hit a few in the cage and decided he could still go.  After the last swing, he apparently decided that he couldn't anymore.  As odd as I thought it, I'm not going to get too worked up about it.

From replays it appeared that Plouffe hurt himself the previous AB. He trotted to 1B (ground out to SS) and moved "gingerly". Thus, Plouffe's "practice swing" was the one that he fouled-off just before retiring to the dugout.

I admire a player that has the courage to walk off the field when hurt, rather than hurting his team by gutting it out, or worse, causing himself a more sever injury.

As for Trevor, good luck to him. He's not a great player, not a bad player. He's a legit MLB 3B, and I hope he recovers and can play again.

I was not aware of that -- thanks. Then he should have just come out of the game between innings. My opinion is he should just keep walking!

He could have pointed to his side and mouthed "oblique" which then would have been replayed on video.

Yes, true. An above average third basemen. A good man and teammate it would seem. But he is what he is as a hitter and as a runner (as slow as an old farm horse). There I go, sounding cruel again. But I'm not. I just type that way. Sincerely, I wish Plouffe the best of luck too - same as I do with almost all former Twins. I'm trying to think of anyway that I wished to fail ... Delmon, I guess.

We now MUST see Sano play EVERY GAME at third base thru the remainder of the season. Just to see if he can! No substitutes.

And rethink the decision NOT to bring up Adam Walker from Rochester. You can still reach him on the phone. Especially when looking at September 7th's lineup. He could be playing the outfield tonight!

Plouffe should be adios this offseason. He is definitely a MLB ball player, this year did not turn out for him... what do you do.

It is now time for the Twins to put Sano at 3rd full-time and let him mangle that opportunity into "You suck, but we will stick with it with the hope you will improve" or we don't have a projectable future 3B and he is relegated to be a very young career DH.

Make of it what you will, but let's not trick ourselves with unrealistic fantasies. Sano has a bat that will certainly improve. Anything else is being blind and not knowing you are playing a game of darts.

If you had been hurting all day and were only up there hoping it would be better when you tried to swing, you wouldn't have to do that.

We know he can't.  And we know he has injured his elbow while fielding 3B multiple times.  This is not only a viewpoint that can only result in failure, but it's an irresponsible viewpoint considering his injury history.

Yeah, Trevor has at least antother 3-4 years ahead of him in this league. Best of luck to him moving forward, SF, NYY, NYM, could all be potential landing spots for him next year.

A sad way for him to play his last game as a Twin.

Good Luck Plouffe. I am sure some other non contender will want you for a 2-3 year deal.

Minor League deals are usually annual...

I can take all the other cosmetic nuances, even the way Plouffe dares to unbutton his jersey, but did you see the way he ties his shoes? Left over right instead of right over left? How could one even notice how he walked off with that shoe technique so glaring? Sheesh. You would think he should care what fans are thinking about things like that when walking in pain.
