spinowner Provisional Member Posted August 10, 2016 Posted August 10, 2016 Odd, seeing as he got less that 25% of his total outs in his career via strikeout. Crazy career he made there. You may want to reconsider your position, or choose a different area to prod me on. This isn't a wise one. It's not just strikeouts. How many times was the count 1-2 when it should have been 3-0? The answer is at least in triple digits.
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted August 10, 2016 Posted August 10, 2016 I clicked like for this, but there are several players I'll put ahead of Griffey for the "should have been unanimous" title, and the man at the top of the list is Hank 755.I can't argue with that. Our difference in player examples is just a generational gap. When baseball, and sports in general, was the most important thing in my life, Ken Griffey Jr. was lighting up the league. I'm slightly biased towards Griffey because he's my favorite player of all-time.

I'm incredibly biased in the argument, but I've got the documentation to back up my end of things. Glavine we can argue, Maddux actually missed the zone on a called strike about as often as I miss a meal - and I played offensive line in college, so you know the answer to that. Bad camera angles do not equal the modern technology we have today, and in reviewing exactly those bad camera angle films, Maddux often hits the zone. So, please just stop. I've had a bad day, and I'm bound to go off on you for stupidity.

Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted August 10, 2016 Posted August 10, 2016 Maddux was a magician at painting the corners with his pitches. Especially the 2 seamer coming back to the outside corner for right handed hitters. Just nasty.
gunnarthor Old-Timey Member Posted August 10, 2016 Author Posted August 10, 2016 Ichiro had a worse second half of his career. The last 7 seasons, his OPS+ was above average only twice (and this includes this season that is not over.) Also, cumulative career 42 WAR for Ichiro is not Hall of Fame good... 3000 hits or not. Where did you get the 42 number from? I'm not a huge fan of WAR but both fangraphs and b-r have it around 60.
biggentleben Verified Member Posted August 10, 2016 Posted August 10, 2016 So this might be a bad time to bring up the Hrbek/Gant play again? My feelings about Hrbek have never changed. His usage of oxygen on this planet is depriving someone actually worthy. And it has nothing to do with that play. Shall we talk about about Lucas Harrell instead?
Craig Arko Old-Timey Member Posted August 10, 2016 Posted August 10, 2016 Nothing like celebrating 3000 hits to bring out the latent hostility in people.
biggentleben Verified Member Posted August 10, 2016 Posted August 10, 2016 Nothing like celebrating 3000 hits to bring out the latent hostility in people. No. Family friend is burying his second child today. He's not yet 60. That just shouldn't happen. Forgive me if I'm short with the world today.

Thrylos Old-Timey Member Posted August 10, 2016 Posted August 10, 2016 dude, I've never done this on TD......but you ever say anything nice at all, in any thread? Facts are facts. They are not "nice" or not "nice". Stating facts is not "nice"?

diehardtwinsfan Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 I'd say the bickering here needs to be toned down... then again, that was a few days ago... Back to the original issue. I'm not going to get worked up if a writer thinks that there are more qualified HOF guys than there are ballot spots and wants to leave off a guy like Ichiro b/c he knows he will get in... that doesn't really bother me. The ballot right now has more guys deserving than the writers have votes. But leaving him off for a stupid reason... yeah, not a fan of cutting off my nose to spite my face. I'm not sure cumulative WAR is a good metric for Ichiro given that he didn't start playing MLB baseball until he was 27. That's a lot of good seasons that are just not there.
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 I don't mind if voters pass over a guy like Maddux knowing that he'll get into the Hall easily without their vote if the voter is making a point about there being 10 other qualified candidates who deserve a vote (a pretty easy stand to take given this PED tomfoolery). But if someone refuses to vote for anyone from the PED era, they're not doing their job and should be removed from the voting process. That's not a legitimate stance to take and undermines the entire voting process.

If there are 30 guys who legit deserve to be there, you should be able to vote for 30. Restricting vote to any number is BS.

But given the current structure of the voting, I can understand why someone would pass over Maddux - who is a shoe-in - and giving his/her 10 votes to candidates who aren't guaranteed election.

I think it's a good thing to do. I look at Jim Edmonds, who fell off the ballot with 2.5% of the votes in his first year. He's probably not a HOFer anyway, but he deserves more consideration I think.

Unless his defense was terrible (and I don't remember it being bad), he's a legit candidate. I've got to think some guys made it posting worse numbers at CF.

Bark's Lounge Verified Member Posted August 17, 2016 Posted August 17, 2016 Ichiro is a Japanese Treasure and an American Treasure. I am glad he reached the 3K hit marker and it will be fun to watch his speech when he is inducted to the HOF on the 1st ballot, whether he does it himself or has an interpreter or both. His style of play was unorthodox and he was a joy to watch play in the 2000's as much as it was to watch Bonds play in the first half of that decade. Who knows, I am 2 years younger than Ichiro, but I might be sixty by the time he eligible for the HOF. (: Dude is a Ninja!!!
biggentleben Verified Member Posted August 17, 2016 Posted August 17, 2016 He absolutely should be a HOFer. Ridiculous he fell off. Woah there. He shouldn't have fallen off first ballot, but I'm not voting for him, and he'll not ever make any of my IBWAA ballots.
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted August 17, 2016 Posted August 17, 2016 If Edmonds gets in, Lofton needs to get in.
Willihammer Provisional Member Posted August 17, 2016 Posted August 17, 2016 If Tommy McCarthy got in, Josh Willingham should get in.
