Prince

I'm sure it will be brought up in the Celebrity Death Pool thread, but I thought Prince deserved his own thread, he was one of our own and an icon.

I can't believe it, I know he was sick last week, but damn, it's Prince.

Yeah I'm shocked to read this news... I can't imagine the flu was the thing that knocked him out, but maybe it was. Not only was he a Minnesota icon, he was an international icon...

Another big loss in the music industry. They seem to be dropping like flies this year.

OMG! He was a brilliant musician. Wow, just wow. I was hired to be in one of his videos in the early 90s ... wow, just shocked.

The first concert I ever seen was Prince on X-Mas Eve 1984 at the St. Paul Civic Center... I believe it would still be considered the Purple Rain tour as that album came out earlier that year. I was 9 and a huge fan. It probably wasn't very appropriate for my age, but I guess that is the benefit of having young, dumb parents. :)

It had to be the NPG era. Was it "Cream" or "Diamonds and Pearls"?

Um.... Details!?!?

And argh! I would suppose Prince's obsesive policing of his copyrighted material on the internet will prevent us from finding a clip.

Yeah, like I said, it probably wasn't very age appropriate. I remember the stage show being very risque to say the least for that period of time. Darling Nikki was probably one of the songs where my dad made me cover my eyes.

Ha, probably should have covered your ears to.

If I knew girls did that to magazines in the lobby, I'd stay at hotels more often.

Yeah I was wondering why it's nearly impossible to find his original music on youtube, spotify, etc.

It was a bait and switch. Had to go out to PP for a screen test, with my cello. Got a call the next day that I 'passed,' and to be out there by a certain time, and bring with me any 'sexy, black' clothing I owned. All the black I had was concert attire. Anyway, showed up out there, there were 6 of us total ... all string players. We were told we'd be in a video for the song 'Damn U' on his 'glyph' album ... not sure what it was called. They gave us some music to read through so we knew the song (all tracks had already been recorded). After a while we got 'costumed.' What I brought to wear wasn't sufficient enough, so they handed me a skirt to try on. It was a spandex mini skirt ... I play the cello ... you figure that out. I came out of the changing room to say 'This isn't going to work if you want me to be able to play the cello,' and Prince was standing right there. He was tiny, and I wish I had those eyelashes! After he left, they put me in a different skirt ... still mini. Then had us do hair and make up ... think Robert Palmer 'Addicted to Love' models. Then we were told that Prince had enough footage and that we were going to film a video with one of his ... I'm not sure how to call it ... discovery? protege? So they took us out to the Arboretum and we filmed there. Then back to the studio to do more filming there. We got to meet and hang with his band for the day, though. (NPG) They took still shots and promised to send them to us, but it never happened. And since this was during the time of his issues with Warner Bros., anyone under his umbrella was also 'owned' by Warner Bros., so I'm not sure whatever became of the video. I was told that VH1 had purchased it ... but to my knowledge it never aired anywhere.

My dad was probably too distracted, there was some sexy gal on stage with Prince, doing some erotic choreography to open up the song. My dad was and still is a perv... lucky for me on that occasion!

It's really weird that Prince is gone, I think it is just setting in. I feel damn fortunate to have seen that show and still remember it somewhat decently. Not many 40 year olds in the present time have the luxury to say that. I feel pretty lucky. :)

I wonder if people know how hard Prince could rock when he wanted to. The dude had a huge sound with the guitar, case in point @ 3:20

Yeah, he gets a lot of labels, often associated with being a pop star but he was one of the greatest guitarists ever. And he could play any instrument, and play it well.

That Harrison tribute concert was fantastic all around. It would be cool to see something similar for Prince.

I remember seeing him in concert once and he did a solo blues set on the piano. While everyone around me was kind of just 'Meh, play Purple Rain!' I was just in awe. He was an amazing musician. It can't be said enough.

I'd also throw out there that he managed to do something I can't recall about anyone else: his performance made me actually want to continue to watch a Super Bowl halftime show.  Easily the best I can remember in my lifetime.

**** I'm really down about this, just gutted. This one is going to hurt for a long time, it's hard to express the sadness.

He was brilliant, plain and simple, music just flowed from him in every way and his talent was boundless. I think even his most ardent fans likely never appreciated him for his incredible musicianship, more wrapped up in his persona and his act to really sit back and understand how great he really was. He could play anything and his production skills were second to none, the sounds he created and blended were so unique, yet so grounded in a classic past.

I had the pleasure of seeing him a number of times, his live shows were so genuine and heartfelt, the guy was the real deal. He was legit rocking it out or doing something more soulful and he could funk it up with anybody (Bruno Mars is Prince in his wildest ****ing dreams).

Honestly don't think I've been this bothered since Stevie Ray died.

****!

Why is Prince the only one who seems to care at all about what he is doing here? The rest of these guys look like zombies next to him.

Actually, watch the end of that video again. The camera angle makes it look like Prince's guitar just ascends to heaven when he throws it up! Haha.

I wish I had been in town, so I could have been down there with everyone. I have almost cried three times now......I am not one to worship "stars", it isn't usually worth it. And I didn't even put any of his albums in my essential list.

Or, maybe it is the emotions of someone finally buying our house yesterday, or a combo. Either way, kind of a rough day.

I got off the bus a few stops early this morning and rolled by First Ave a bit before 7am. There were still over 100 people lingering about, left over from last night.

Outside of the people gathered around First Ave, downtown was mostly empty... I'm blaring Purple Rain through my headphones, looking at the worn-out crowd. I damned near lost it right then and there in the street.

So, no. It's not just you.
