ScrapTheNickname Provisional Member Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 Joe Mauer has been on base 33 consecutive games. This is very impressive. Keep on going, Joe. I have wondered about hitting streaks vs. on-base streaks; the latter seems more important, yet generally you don't hear about it. So I looked it up, and do you know who holds the MLB record?record? Ted Williams. 84 games. The man who missed 5 years of baseball during the prime of his career, while fighting in World War II and Korea would have amassed around 3500 hits and 700 home runs if not for that little blip. (Career career OBP: just .482.)

gunnarthor Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 Williams OPS during those 84 games - 1.213. He won the MVP that year.

Fighting in two wars is simply an extraordinary asterisk to Ted Willliams' career, no?
ScrapTheNickname Provisional Member Posted September 14, 2015 Author Posted September 14, 2015 His OPS during this time is .752.Not an impressive number at all. Thanks for sharing.

Fighting in two wars is simply an extraordinary asterisk to Ted Willliams' career, no? not at all! It was more just a joke about the amount of criticism Mauer receives on social media (and even some message boards "he should retire!!22!") But yes, it's pretty amazing that williams had such a great baseball career and military career. One of the better stories that doesnt get talked about very much I feel.

The man who missed 5 years of baseball during the prime of his career, ...Good thing those 84 games didn't come during one of those periods. We would have failed to even notice. / Yeah, STN, another lame attempt at sarcastic humor. So it goes...
