Sale is making $6 million this year, and will earn $9.15 million next season, and $12 million in 2018. Additionally – and here’s the real topper – his deal contains a $12.5 million team option for 2019, and a $13.5 million option for 2020.

For a lefty ace like Sale?

 

I'd give the Sox just about whatever they wanted. The obvious dilemma would be potentially facing whichever prospects you gave them so often because they're in the same division. That would make it a tough pill to swallow, but probably still worth it.

The White Sox would also have to face Chris Sale perennially for a likely 5 years.

 

This is never going to happen, but I think I would include Sano in discussions.....it really really really hurts me to say that, but I think I would.

You don't make that trade within the division, particularly when it turns your team from a potential powerhouse for 6-8 years to a powerhouse for 2-3 years if everything goes right. The Twins should be going into the prime years of Buxton/Sano/Berrios/Meyer/May/Rosario/etc. during that time, not handing away some of the best prospects to a division rival and shortening their window considerably.

 

If the Twins are an 85 win team in 2016 and they need a Sale-like piece to get over the top in 2017, then you make that kind of deal. Get your own house in order and then make a push toward greatness.

Well Brock , as it was stated it does sound that way, can you expound on your thoughts??....................................... I agree at this time and place I may not make a trade like that, we are hopefully a yr away from doing something like this.........but as much as we like Sano, he is still just a prospect. And I guess I like Berrios , but he is not a top of the rotation type pitcher......his type will be easier to find, maybe not in hard work, but in talent.......Sano is tougher to trade cuz of the possible potential. But almost every year there are prospects, like Dominic Brown, Jesus Montero, who were top 10 prospects in all of baseball and who are average, much less not superstars. So trading away potential for actual results is or can be a good thing, IMO :)

The key is if everything goes right. Things don't seem to be going peachy for Sano right now. The Twins seem happy with Plouffe (as am I). Maybe Sano's value is at it's height at this moment? How often does a guy like Sale come along with that kind of contract?

How are things not peachy for Sano?

 

On June 1st, his OPS was .834.

 

Today, it is .842.

I don't know how much more you can ask for a player than a top 10 and a top 40 (maybe even top 30) prospect.

 

That's an enormous haul. The Sox might be able to get a 100-150 prospect thrown in as well but Sano/Berrios should be able to pry away almost any player in baseball that isn't Mike Trout or Clayton Kershaw.

 

With that said, I don't see why the White Sox would want to trade Chris Sale at all.

I don't think Olney is at all arrogant. In fact, I like Olney, even though what I say next won't sound like it. Olney is, in my mind, an MLB version of Sid Hartmann. He knows a lot, but his understanding is not very nuanced, and especially when he is proposing trades, he makes more noise than sense.

But I do like listening to his daily podcast. Good baseball talk

The White Sox aren't a "rebuild" kind of franchise, they "reload". Sale's not for sale, they'll try to buy or trade to fill their holes.

 

Key word being try.

I agree with most posters, that Sale wont or shouldnt even be in trade talks, he is pretty young with a good contract..........but if he was for sale, I would do Berrios and Sano.......Sano has a CHANCE to be special, but Berrios is way overrated by most Twins posters on here.......IMO Berrios has a #3 pitcher ceiling. Nice to have, but can be found or made.

I would like to watch Sale pitch every 5th day. And I would like to watch Sano bat every day. A reason to trade for Sale is the current Twins staff is over performing. There is going to be a staff regression. Which is a reason to keep Berrios. A reason to keep Sano is June 2015. With the exception of Thursday's two home run outburst, runs have been mostly gifted to the team. They need some sticks. One thought: if you are of the belief that Sano can not move Plouffe, trade him for Sale tomorrow along with ?) Because in essence you are getting Sale for less than Trevor Plouffe! Now that's a great deal!
