Predict Torii's Suspension Here/Suspended Two Games (updated)

Recommended Posts

I predict a two game suspension.   Earlier this year, David Ortiz was suspended for one game for bumping an umpire after contesting a "no checked swing" call.   Ortiz threw his bat.  Torii threw a bigger tantrum, and threw more stuff.   So, he will get twice as much as Ortiz.

I don't think he'll get a suspension.  Ortiz deliberately caused contact with the ump.

But if I'm wrong, your guess is good.  2 days.

He should be fined heavily, but there should be no suspension. The umpire initiated the contact with him.

However, I would predict 2 games, maybe one.

Which, of course, is fine. he's 39, he's going to get days off either way.

I agree with Seth, I think he will get a fairly big fine, but wouldn't be surprised to see him get at least 2 games.

Also, it looked liked the one umpire said "I'm just trying to get you off the field." as he and Torii both kind of acknowledged they weren't trying to push each other.

I don't see it as him making contact with an umpire as he wasn't even the umpire Torii was yelling at.

Actual physical contact with an umpire is a big no-no. The accompanying massive tantrum will get Torii the two game suspension I am predicting..  By initiating contact, Torii Hunter touched the third rail.

I think that the ump should be fined just as heavily, it makes me mad to see umpires constantly disrespecting the game.

The ump initiated contact.

I think it would be good for the game to have fines and/or suspensions for umpires in certain well-defined circumstances, for example baiting a player (or coach or manager) into arguing or making a bad call, especially if the call is unreviewable or unprotestable and affects the outcome of a game.

According to that graph the ump made very few bad calls. The ones he missed were inside pitches.

If the red triangles are KC pitcher strikes (as the it says they are) I have a hard time finding Torri's pitch.

According to the graph the ump only called one outside pitch a strike all night. It was to a right handed hitter and that was from a Minnesota pitcher.

Something's amiss.

I did look at it, and it shows that he had a wider zone when the Twins were batting.

I don't think you're reading it correctly if that is your conclusion.  I'm also struggling to see how the umpire initiated contact.

I thought he stayed relatively calm.  Torii has a right to voice his opinion and the umpire has a right to toss him if he crosses the line.  I would imagine Torii wanted to cross that line, everything that happened from there was theatrics for a purpose.

But faulting the ump there for anything but one bad strike call is unfair.

Hope this helps.  (Not the HP Umpire, the other one is the one who was pushing him around...)

He had more than one bad strike call, I counted ten pitches that he called strikes that were balls. I don't care what the umpires usually call, the actual strike zone in the rulebook is what I go by, the zone isn't supposed to shift for lefty or righty batters.

Then you could repeat your little counting exercise for virtually every umpire every night and get similar results.  How meaningful is that?

Well if I did that I might be able to conclude that the umpires were indeed disrespecting the game.

I am pretty sure Torii isn't on a mission to get umpires to strictly conform to the exact rule book strike zone.

Sounds about right for what he did!

Why? He never initiated contact with an umpire, and the punishment for throwing equipment is a fine, not a suspension.

Lavelle thinks the prior incidents are heavily influencing the punishment.

Good leaders often get them selves suspended for two games when their team needs them the most! Good work Torii! Never stop throwing a tantrum like a teenager from time to Time, maybe you can do us a real favor and take a swing at plouffe and hit one of our RP instead
