I expected this. Stauffer hasn't even pitched since returning, so they probably want to see him at least once.

Boo.  We just demoted the guy we brought in mid-inning to face Hanley Ramirez and David Ortiz with a runner on base and a two-run lead in our last game (not to mention entering mid-inning with runners on in a tie and 1-run game the previous week).

All so we could keep a guy who hasn't pitched the last week, not even with 5 and 7 run leads.

I'd love to hear PM and TR explain about the 13-man staff in general and about Stauffer in particular. There's obviously something going on that the fans don't know about.

Baffling. Truly baffling. He's good enough to face the meat of the Boston order, but not to beat out Stauffer. 10000000 dollars says no beat writer pushes on this.

Or even certain TD beat posters.

I think the thought process is more pitchers at this time.  we keep both pitchers by sending Tonkin down giving us more options throughout the season.  after a month or 2 of more games we wont need as many options and the fat will be trimmed.

We know what's going on, it's just not something the front office can admit publicly.

Seems like a little too much effort for a guy not making that much money in the grand scheme of things and who clearly has no future with the organization.

If Tonkin isn't good enough to beat Stauffer, why do they care if they lose him? Giving away roster spots is bad practice. They have no DH, and they clearly have some RP that should not be in MN.

Pretty much this whole board said the logical thing was to get rid of Stauffer. I agree with the poster above, this shows, imo, that Ryan is not above criticism, and appears to have some kind of blind spot.

Good enough to face the heart of the Boston roster, not good enough to beat Stauffer.*

VETERANS THAT MAKE MONEY FOR THE WIN!

Disappointing but hardly surprising.

Yeah, but even Pressly won in the seniority sweepstakes.

I'm sure they are thinking this, but man, almost two months in and there is already some depth established in the minors.

Dissapointing.  But the true reality that between the two of them, they have tosses 1.1 IP combined in the last 9 games.  Tonkin now because he has options and Stauffer when Arcia/Vargas is back up.......one can only hope.

Pressly is better than Tonkin, so maybe he won the talent sweepstakes.

Good defensive posting on your part.  This thread has all the makings of an epic derail, with plenty of fines and suspensions.

5.14 ERA, 6.13 FIP and 1.43 WHIP

Tonkin's numbers this season.   Does that look like someone who pitched well enough to deserve a job in the the majors playing for a division leader?

Nope.

(Stauffer hasn't either, but that is another story.)

Not a Fien fan by any means, but even him was better than Tonkin...

Very doubtful.  Who was the closer in Rochester when they were both there?

Yep, I don't think anyone is arguing this point, it's the "another story" that is the problem.

Begging the question why they have so many pitchers right now.

Saying Tonkin is better than Stauffer is obvious, but probably the wrong way to look at it. Stauffer is blocking a bat, not an arm. They wouldn't want Tonkin up and not pitching, and he would be the 4th righty out of the pen, alternating mop up duty with Graham.
