Badsmerf Verified Member Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 Who are the pitching coach candidates worth talking about? Curt Young, the pitching coach for the A's, has been brilliant in his time with the A's. I don't think the Twins will be stealing him anytime soon. So lets get into more reasonable candidates. Brad Arnsberg. In 2011 was a fall-guy for a goofy Astros front office. He openly argued with the GM in a dugout (I couldn't find the details about it). Credited for many success stories in his time there, especially working with young players and turning Bret Myers career around. Rick Rodriguez. A pitching coach for the A's in the minors, he has been in the organization and got to work with Rick Peterson (pitching coordinator Baltimore now) and Beane. Seems like he'd be a good fit for the job. Past Twins stars. Circle me Bert, Viola, Morris... Any of those guys could be on the Twins list for potential hires. I think we'll have to see who gets hired as manger first, but I wont count out obscure former Twins as candidates.
Willihammer Provisional Member Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 That choice is going to fall to whoever they hire as manager. If I were manager, I'd give Pedro a call. No seriously, I'd call The Pedro. If you haven't read him talking about pitching, you should. He is like a zen monk. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/pedro-martinez-on-the-art-and-science-of-pitching/
brvama Provisional Member Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 I would think that Cuellar or possibly some of our own MiL pitching coaches might be considered also. Personally, I'd like to have Cuellar.

Kirby_waved_at_me Verified Member Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 So ... did Johan retire? He knew a lot about pitching.
ScottyB Verified Member Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 My choices would be 1) Carl Willis and 2) Eddie Guardado. The Big Train had 3 Cy Young winners in his tenure as Cleveland and Seattle pitching coach - King Felix, Cliff Lee, and CC Sabathia.

stringer bell Verified Member Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 It really doesn't have to be an ex-Twin. Pitching coach is probably the one position on the coaching staff that could have a real impact on the team's results this season. I'm sure that any managerial candidate has a short list of pitching coaches he wants if he gets a job.

And this is why the manager hire is so important -- probably shouldn't default to ex-Twins there either.
BrianTrottier Verified Member Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 Is Greg Maddux available? He'd be my top choice.
Kirby_waved_at_me Verified Member Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 If the Twins hire Mike Maddux, it's possible Greg could follow. I think Greg is a special assistant / coach with Texas currently with his brother.
071063 Verified Member Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 I like the Greg Maddux idea. I think he would be an excellent pitching coach.
Roaddog Verified Member Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 Just curious why there isn't a lot of love for Steinbach? Played under LaRussa, worked with Dave Duncan.
Willihammer Provisional Member Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 Steinbach as pitching coach? Or as manager
Roaddog Verified Member Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 Sorry, had the manager post on my mind when i read this. I have heard Pat Hentgen mentioned in ties with Molitor. Other than that, i don't have any clue. I'd probably look to an organization known for it's pitching and go from there.
Bark's Lounge Verified Member Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 Eddie Perez (Brave BP Coach) and Mark Gardener (Giants BP Coach) might be good candidates.
Thegrin Verified Member Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 I'd like to see Mike Marshall and his off-beat training methods get a major league try. http://drmikemarshall.com/
ashbury Verified Member Posted October 6, 2014 Posted October 6, 2014 Dr Marshall has been pushing his ideas to all who would listen for many many years now. He has had lots of young pitchers come to him, and I think if he had some magic touch there would be more success stories by now.
