Does Capps have any trade value right now? I highly doubt that in a trade they could get the equivalent of the draft pick they would have gotten simply for letting him walk in the off-season. It's bad enough that they gave up the draft pick to re-sign him, but they paid him 2-3 times as much as other similar RP's got in the offseason.

Exhibit A why Terry Ryan should be fired! This was a move that no one in their right mind would make. HE OVERPAID FOR A CLOSER ON A 100 LOSS TEAM AND GAVE UP A FIRST ROUND PICK FOR THE RIGHT TO OVERPAY!

It was sure as hell a better move than resigning Nathan, who was overpaid to do the job he is currently doing with Texas. While $4 for Capps is not a bargain, it is better that the Twins have a guy with some closing experience on their team then going with someone they don't have knowledge of replacing a guy in the "Most Important Role in the Bullpen" (this role isn't as important as people believe, as you could just stick an average to above-average reliever in there and he will put up large numbers of saves.)

Completely agree, its a trade that needs to be made. Start with Boston and see what the going rate is. I sincerely hope TR has already done this.

The Twins will not have the upper hand in any trades they pursue this summer. Every other team knows their predictiment and will not give top prospects for anything we put on the table. The best case scenario is last year's Delmon Young trade. For A Matt Capps, Franny Liriano, Carl Pavano, Jason Marquis we will get a Lester Oliveros or worse type prospect. Maybe Willingham and Span can fetch a little more. If the Twins give away Span - they will look like and be total bumbling idiots. Darwin Award caliber at that.

As much as I don't wish injury on anyone, this would be ideal for the Twins. A perfect scenario would be for Capps to get hot and a contender to unexpectedly lose a closer. Again, I don't wish injury on anyone but since these things are inevitable it could definitely be an opportunity to recoup some of the value lost through the ridiculous trade that brought him here.

Too much, the guys on the bench who gave up the gum for Capps would be pretty upset. The seeds maybe, but not the seeds AND the gum.

There is always a need for a closer...if they can close. Right now the Red Sox, Nationals, A's are just a few of the teams needing a closer. Capps can probably draw interest as a team could have him for the following year, too, at a modest salary.

 

Liriano is pretty worthless. Any team that trades for him would have to be prepared to arbitrate and pay $7-8 million for at least one more year, or release him and hope they can slightly overbid any other takers.

 

Pavano will draw a prospect, but again, no team will arbitrate him at this stage. Twins can trade him and bring him back for $4-5 million probably.

 

Marquis would be a pure salary dump for a very minor prospect.

 

Doumit can be a bargain The Twins got a one-year deal. If he produces, he can arbitrate for a modest $5 million, which isn't bad for a backup catcher who can hit and play other positions. For that reason, the Twins need to play him.

 

Remember, the Twins could spend $10-15 million alone on draft prospects this year. If they continue their worthless play, they could spend another $15-20 million on what may be a better draft class again in 2013.

The draft pick was not a guarantee. Someone would have needed to give him a major league deal. Was there also a deadline? A few of the closers signed very late in the process.

 

Best case. He puts up the appearance of success and the Twins get a C level prospect. It could happen.

Ask and ye shall receive. Sadly, Mariano Rivera tore his ACL today and is likely done for the year. The Yanks will probably bump Robertson to the 9th inning and Soriano to the 8th inning, but they will need someone to handle the 7th inning. Maybe Capps could be of interest to the Yankees to fill that role.

He could fetch something. Every contending team feels like they need to shore up their bullpen... Bullpens never feel like they are shored up. A vet closer... Even an average vet closer will fetch something.

 

Some GM's get so desperate for bullpen help when facing the stretch run in contention that they will move good prospects at position they are stocked with. Some teams will give up a high level catching prospect (for example) for a closer of Capps ability.

I think the Twins should trade Capps, but not right now. Teams will give up more once they get more desperate. And I doubt the Yankees would want him outside of a middle-relief role, so they probably wouldn't offer much.

The Giants, Nationals, Blue Jays, Red Sox and now the Yankees have already lost their closer. Only the Twins view a pitcher with a sub 5K/9 as a closer. If the Twins released Capps at this moment meaning they would have to eat all but a portion of the league minimum salary, I bet there would be plenty of teams who have bullpen problems who wouldn't even make a play for him.
