7.08

Any runner is out when --

(a) (1) He runs more than three feet away from his baseline to avoid being tagged unless his action is to avoid interference with a fielder fielding a batted ball. A runner’s baseline is established when the tag attempt occurs and is a straight line from the runner to the base he is attempting to reach safely;

 

I suppose you could argue the ump's call was correct

I don't know. He didn't take a good route on that ball. Got turned around and was lucky to catch it at all. We get that a lot around here. Won't name any names. You know who you are.

I watched the highlights and it was fun to watch Arcia and Nuñez. They showed a lot of fire out there. Nuñez has had a couple of big late game hits already. He isn't a great player, but he has something to offer.

Nice win. It is certainly nice to see see the ball bounce the Twins way.

 

I have not chimed in on this season until a few days ago and at that time I did not have much to say, but, I like this team a whole helluva a lot compared to the last few years and I get they are at best an "Even Steven" team. I think Dozier, Plouffe, and Suzuki have appeared to become leaders on this team, but I cannot ignore Arcia's passion and explosiveness. He may not be a leader on this club, but he can start some fires.... and I love it!!! It is players like Arcia that continue to draw me to watching MLB.

 

A short losing streak ends - let's begin a winning one. 3-1 against the Rangers and a sweep of the Yanks!!!

Pretty sure that rule was enacted after a guy in the teens (or possibly 20s) stole second base, then stole first, then stole second again.

 

I seem to recall that's how it happened. It was really bizarre.

 

edit: seems that it was somewhat common back in the day:

 

In baseball's earlier decades, a runner on second base could "steal" first base, perhaps with the intention of drawing a throw that might allow a runner on third to score (a tactic famously employed by Germany Schaefer). However, such a tactic was not recorded as a stolen base. MLB rules now forbid running clockwise on the basepaths to "confuse the defense or make a travesty of the game".[26] Further, after the pitcher assumes the pitching position, runners cannot return to any previous base.

I wonder how the probability of scoring a run changes when you leave second base in order to steal first base. Maybe that's a strategy that makes sense above the t-ball level, where kids seem to employ it on a somewhat regular basis. Hmmm....
