Really? I admired the bullets Tonkin was throwing today - we aren't privy to that kind of heat from Twins pitching. Guerrier was crap as expected.

Phew, almost had a RP from the minors on the roster......but you can't be one of the oldest teams in the games by using your minors. Very important to have 35 year old RP on the roster.......

Worse than that foolishness, this was the perfect scenario to bring up a bona fide pinch hitter and position player....Hermann, he of the .128 BA, .319 OPS and very shaky OFing skills, is the antithesis of that description.

(The Twins missed a chance to DFA Hermann off of the 40-man after his last demotion).

Herrmann went and hit well for Rochester. I don't think the book should just be closed on him. And we know the situation . . . Pinto or Suzuki will be used to pinch hit for the pitcher.

Give him credit for going down and not pouting, but he looked vastly overmatched with the big club (and by recommending DFAing him, it's with the assumption that no one else wanted to put him on their 40-man- I could be wrong about that). By calling him up, you essentially waste a roster spot, just so Pinto or Suzuki can PH in the 7th, 8th or 9th. Why not have multiple options with an actual chance of getting a hit? Escobar can catch for an inning or two should the worst happen. Does Gardy remember how to double-swtich?

I'm confused.

Did you want them to keep 13 pitchers? (I'm not a big fan of Guerrier being on the roster but he can't be sent down. So it is either keep him, trade him or part ways with him -- and I suspect that they are hoping that he might bring something back in a trade in a month or two.)

What bench player would you have them bring up instead of Herrmann? It can't be Arcia. Doesn't sound like Willingham is ready. Fuld apparently hasn't had a long enough period symptom-free from the concussion.

All I see here are complaints -- no suggestions of what they should have done except perhaps for keeping Tonkin instead of Guerrier. And obviously that decision is related to options at this point.

Maybe it will be helpful if those folks who are displeased (and it seems to be an all-star roster) would elucidate the alternative they'd like to see.

I'd like to see Vargas get a chance. Maybe he's ready, and maybe he's not. Probably he's not. It still might give me a reason to miss some sleep for the west coast trip.

I don't see too many other options until Arcia, Willingham, and Fuld are ready. Are there?

I would be surprised to see Vargas at all this year, but especially so right before a trip to NL parks.

But he is still young for AA and only has 40 games there.

I just don't see them bringing him up for a brief cup of coffee in May.

"Someone" could have gone to the DL (we all know who the usual suspect is, and there is precedent with Pelfrey's mystery injury), and with a day off tomorrow, the rotation could have flowed perfectly through the entire road trip with a 4-man rotation.

Since the other guys supposedly aren't ready, I don't have a problem with Herrmann so long as he primarily sits and Gardy doesn't feel he needs to be worked into every game somehow, just because.

Arcia was optioned earlier this week and available. I had heard it was going to be Arcia, who has a chance to do some damage. I'm not convinced Hermann does. Maybe they wanted to keep Arcia down there to play every day?

How exactly is Vargas young (almost 24)?

Why is it a bad thing to call someone up for a week or two to sit on the bench? This isn't disrupting his development.

The Vargas idea is creative and interesting. He appears poised to demonstrate that he's mastered AA. However, it has sounded in the past like his future position is DH. Going into a national league park, the team needs position flexibility more than it needs a pure pinch hitter. Herrmann provides the best position flexibility for this short-term need.

Vargas should be considered for promotion to AAA in the near future, because Rochester's first baseman, Brad Nelson, appears to be the weakest hitter in the Rochester line-up, with the exception of a recently-demoted glove specialist, and promotion would give Vargas the opportunity to show his stuff against higher-level pitching. If Vargas demonstrates the same mastery of AAA that he is showing in AA, a September call-up to TF would be more than reasonable.
