Even the dearly missed Polo was primarily playing second base in the minors, but then got thrown into the fire at short in the bigs. (Is this correct?) Sometimes necessity forces their hand, which would then be an argument for getting players time at multiple positions.

Is THIS the Year for Jorge Alcala?
wabene replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Apparently many see things quite differently. https://www.si.com/mlb/twins/news/fangraphs-projects-twins-to-have-second-best-bullpen-in-baseball I like the way they have packed the pen this year. Much better than last year. Of course with Varland, Paddack and Stewart coming back, the pen looked pretty good by the playoffs. Alcala can look good at times, he's got electric stuff. Can he put it together for the Twins this year? I look forward to watching him when he gets his inevitable chance.- 40 replies

Twins 2024 Position Analysis: Third Base
wabene replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'd like to add that when Lewis injured his ACL a second time management decided to play him where he was more comfortable upon his return. The guy probably had to learn to trust his repaired knee. Two straight surgeries would put anyone into a state of shock. It was a smart move to keep him comfortable as he also had to deal performing in MLB for the first time. There was a lot on his plate.- 42 replies

Twins 2024 Position Analysis: Third Base
wabene replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The front office stated pretty clearly that the plan was to keep him on the dirt for now. Earlier in this thread someone posted Royce himself stating that his future was not written in stone. This site would be devoid of most content without speculation and that is all this has been. Speculation about how to juggle the roster if we are in the enviable position of having multiple young players perform. Royce has a good skillet for the outfield. Seem like a pretty logical progression to speculate that outfield may be a possible destination for Lewis. Especially when other young players like Lee and Kirilloff are not as well suited there. He had also played there before in the majors and minors. The only time (until this thread as a joke) I brought it up was as pushback to those who have what I consider an irrational fear of Lewis in the outfield. I have simply mentioned I think it is a possible outcome. Whether it happens or not does not matter as long as we win. That is my position.- 42 replies

Twins 2024 Position Analysis: Third Base
wabene replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Is anyone really pressing the idea of moving Lewis to the outfield? It doesn't seem that way to me. I would say it is the opposite, that there are people banging away against him ever moving there. Many because they believe he would somehow be more apt to be injured there. I'm simply suggesting that it may be a good solution if all the cards fall a certain way. I'm open to it if it makes the most sense. I am against moving Julien or any player to full time DH. A guy like Nelson Cruz would be worth losing the roster flexibility, but he was special.- 42 replies

Twins 2024 Position Analysis: Third Base
wabene replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It's a little tongue in cheek because it's a volatile subject here. I will go on record stating that I don't believe there is more injury risk in the outfield for Lewis. To the point I would say that idea is bunk. When the dust settles and we see how they all perform, I just want the best players to play where it benefits the team the most. I don't care where they end up as long as it helps us win.- 42 replies

After the all-star break, they'll have to start sprinkling in reps in left to prepare for the inevitable move in '25. Bwaaaahahaha! 😂- 42 replies

Grading the Minnesota Twins’ 2024 Offseason
wabene replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm giving ownership a D-. It is not a fail because the team still exists to play games in beautiful Target Field. The Pohlads previous experience owning a media company did not go well. Here they are again somehow not getting ahead of the changing broadcast metric. To have Cory P going on record about improved access, only to make him the fool while accepting a mystery low ball deal in the eleventh hour. That is bush league. At a crucial juncture with an aging fan base and no way for the younger crowd to access the games in their preferred methods is just simply bad business. Add to that cutting payroll after the most successful season in decades killing momentum with an excited fan base, not a good look. Top it off with the continued tone deafness of DSP. How does this guy have this job? I'll give the front office a B+, for their maneuverings while being clearly hamstrung. This grade will go down if: Carlos Santana is getting plate appearances against rightys after the all-star break and not producing. Other cheaper veterans are not producing, but kept around to block performing younger players.- 46 replies

If we get 100 good innings out of Disco, it doesn't really matter when it happens.
-
Meanwhile, Varland is pumping the gas, first world problems.
-
Fair enough.
-
Gotta say I think the guy is clearly 2 dimensional, so that makes sense.
-
Nobody really thought they were ever getting a quality starter for Polo did they? ( I will always love Jorge Polanco). Disco is a veteran depth flyer who costs the Twins relatively nothing. Getting, say, 100 innings out of Desclafani is the fricken cherry on top. They dumped Polo's salary and cleared the way for the French batting savant/coffee cup holder.

Twins 2024 Position Analysis: Second Base
wabene replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Next year if Kepler is gone, Wallner moves to right. Who plays left? Julien will be good at second this year, I'm not among those in a hurry to move him. If AK rips it up, Julien performs as I predict, Larnach doesn't claim left in '25, Wallner performs, Lee is ready and Kepler leaves, your hole is in left. In that case what do you do? I would move Lewis to left and put Lee at 3rd. Julien stays put. Lots of ifs, yes, my only point is I don't see why so many are in such a hurry to move Julien to 1st/DH. It's like they forget about AK. We will find out this year, but I think there is a good chance Kirilloff is healthy, he rakes and also shows he is a fine first baseman.- 68 replies

Yes there is plenty of focus on what ownership didn't do. Falvey and his crew sure were up to the challenge of building a team while losing 30m of their budget. The strong organization, top to bottom made this possible. Ownership got one thing right when they hired Derek Falvey. He has grown into his job nicely.

Anthony DeSclafani Will Sink(er) Swim
wabene replied to Greggory Masterson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This past year was the first time I noticed a sinker used in this way. It was sometimes masterfully done by Sonny Gray. Loved watching batters stand there as the ball came back over the plate. There were times when Sonny was just painting it. Doesn't Ober also use a two seamer this way, albeit less often? -

Uh-oh. Simeon Woods Richardson is Throwing Gas Again.
wabene replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This is welcome news. I had questioned earlier whether his extreme over the top delivery limited his velocity ceiling. Well apparently the answer is yes. Simeon is a big, strong, athletic young man, so the 90 mph fastball was curious. If SWR breaks out the Twins starter depth gets a needed jolt. -
So the contender is giving this guy plate appearances? He has a career 119 OPS+against leftys, but still not exciting. Edit; the 80 OPS+ referenced above is last year.

Disclaimer; I do pay attention to two forms of social media, Twinsdaily and TelemarkTalk. That's enough for me and I don't want to be hypocritical. The din of X is inescapable. Even without ever having downloaded the Twitter app it is constantly referenced by media. You do hear athletes and other public figures say they completely avoid it. That makes a lot of sense for them. I would also think that while, of course, public relations is very important to large organizations like the Twins, the immediate shrill of Twitter should be ignored during daily decision making.

X-Factors: Cleaning Up the Twins' Defense
wabene replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I agree Kirilloff has the upside to take this and run with it. I'll be rooting for him. This is no knock on Santana. Donnie Barrels contributed last year and you could say the Twins got quite a bit out of him. Santana has more to offer and with proper handling the Twins may just get him a mini resurgence. That being said, Kirilloff is a prime prospect and him finally putting it together can be huge for the squad.- 21 replies
