Really? Because every one of the thousands of articles over the winter were titled "Twins seek MLB-ready contributors for Polanco" or "Twins want established pitcher in return for Polanco" - every single source was saying that. So the Twins went out and got DeSclafini, which was depressing, but many of us thought "we'll see, at least he's an MLB pitcher" but now he's done for the year and a everyone is now saying "It was about dumping salary"?!?!?! Not to get on your case specifically, I'm just reading a lot of people who are all of a sudden pretending that the Twins were just trying to get rid of Polanco like he was Josh Donaldson or something. That is absolutely false. This was a bad trade at the time and it looks absolutely awful now. The Twins do not have the resources to keep trading for injured pitchers.

Well now it looks like he won't see the field until he's 35. Put up a big fat zero for the Twins.

So with the fog clearing and the dust settling, is anyone else in complete disbelief in what the Twins got back in the Jorge Polanco trade? A washed up 40 year-old pitcher getting hit to the tune of a 5.89 ERA at the end of his career who can't even get on the field and a run-of-the-mill middle reliever? Please tell me the prospect the Twins picked up in the deal was a blue-chip can't-miss future every-day player. Because if not, I really have no idea why the Twins gave away a year of Jorge Polanco for absolutely nothing. Duran's injury is worrisome. The guy's out there throwing 104 MPH three nights a week I'm surprised his arm is still attached. It seems that a guy throwing that hard, consistently, just doesn't have a long shelf life this day in age.

I think the term "young" is thrown around too loosely by Twins fans. People confuse "prospect" with "young" all too often. Our prospects are NOT young. Larnach and Kirilloff are pretty much the average age of an MLB ballplayer these days. Austin Martin too. And then we have Aaron Sabato, who I think like 35 years old now, if memory serves. Twins "prospects" are typically pretty late to arrive at the majors, compared to other teams. Other teams get guys like Harper and Acuna playing in The Show at 19 years old, meanwhile the Twins "youth movement" is a bunch of 26 year-olds who are almost out of options. And before you say "HARPER AND ACUNA ARE ONCE IN A LIFETIME TALENTS" - I was just using them as an example. My point is that the Twins tend to promote late. This either means that the young talent in the farm system isn't talented enough to force their hands, or they prefer to wait so they can feast of the player's most productive years without having to pay them big contract money. Or both.

Twins 2024 Position Analysis: First Base
bighat replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Currently still a free agent, believe it or not. The guy hit .282 last year in 400 ABs, and is super flexible and can play multiple positions. Kind of surprising he hasn't been signed.- 80 replies

Twins 2024 Position Analysis: First Base
bighat replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If someone offered you a million dollars to correctly predict which player had the better season (Santana or Kirilloff)....let's be honest we'd all pick Santana. Kirilloff's got a nagging injury that hasn't gone away. That doesn't make him a bad guy, or a bad baseball player, but it does mean that we should keep our expectations realistic. I predict Santana to get more innings at 1B, more hits, HRs, RBI and plate appearances than Kirilloff this year. And that's fine! I think he's a perfectly capable player. It's unfortunate to not be able to put a true power hitter at this corner IF spot, but that's where we are.- 80 replies

I'm in the same camp. Miller looked great and could be a Corey Seager type of SS. I guess the Twins are thinking Lee, Julien, and Lewis will be anchoring the infield for the next decade.... But trading Miller for a backup outfielder? Yikes.

Remember 3 years ago on this board when Trevor Larnach was the next "Sure Thing"? Turns out the only sure thing is that he'll strike out if you throw him a curveball. Anyone remember Bobby Keilty? Frankly I think at this point Larnach will be lucky to have a career like his. I'm guessing he won't be with the Twins much longer, will get a cup of coffee or two with another club. He strikes out way too much for a AAAA player and doesn't have any other tricks in his bag to make up for the deficiencies. The Twins gift wrapped the job for Larnach the past couple years, now they're basically handing it to Wallner. Let's see if Wallner takes the opportunity and runs with it.

Dang, I remember this board just 3 years ago when Balazovic was THE GUY we were all excited about. "Wait until Balazovic gets here", people were talking like this guy was a sure thing, we had the next Gerrit Cole and he was coming to OUR TEAM and life was going to be amazing for Twins fans for years to come. Imagine if the Twins had shipped him off in a deal for a major league player back then? As others have said, it's a reminder that prospects - even the most polished - are never sure things until they produce at the MLB level. So the next time you think the Twins gave up too many prospects in a deal, or that they should trade MLB talent for prospects, just remember that it's extremely risky. Also, how weird that Jordy Blaze is out of options? What the heck, he's spent like 2 months in the majors, how does a guy like that get out of options?

Assessing the Twins' Trade of Jorge Polanco
bighat replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Just read that Topa is 33 years old and has had two Tommy John procedures. I think the OF prospect was the real focus here. We won't know for probably 3 years if this was a good trade or not.- 99 replies

Assessing the Twins' Trade of Jorge Polanco
bighat replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Agreed. And for as good as Polanco is, he's definitely been suffering more injuries the past 2+ years. He's not "injury prone" just yet but his nagging injuries aren't going to just go away as he hits age 30, we know that. What a great tenure he had in a Twins uniform.- 99 replies

I have no idea why everyone's so mad? A top Seattle prospect, a starting pitcher who can slot into the rotation, a bullpen arm, a project, and some cash for Jorge Polanco? I love Polanco, he's a top 5 all-time favorite Twin for me. But I think with Julien & Brooks Lee both looking solid, you have to make this trade.

How Should the Twins Treat First Base This Offseason?
bighat replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Honestly Kirilloff isn't going to be "the guy" and doesn't seem to fit on the roster. I know we were promised Kirilloff & Larnach were the new M&M Boys, but we have to get over it and move on. Kirilloff's injury seems to be permanent and Larnach can't hit a curveball. The end. I sure hope the front office has begun thinking ahead as well. Both of those guys have had careers better than 99% of pro ballplayers to this point. But like most of their counterparts they've passed along the way, they just aren't every day MLB players. Time to move on.- 14 replies

Don't Forget About Jose Miranda
bighat replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Same could be said for Larnach, who has been given a starting OF job on a platter for the past 2-3 years but has been unable to keep it. Heck, Gordon went out and grabbed that OF job in 2022 and had a great year until he was hurt in '23. -
Astros 3, Twins 2: The Season is Over
bighat replied to Thiéres Rabelo's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Another well pitched game - the Twins have had plenty of those this year. Hats off to the pitching staff, one of the best in the league. The offense sunk the ship once again. Strike one, strike two, strike three. Again and again. An oblivious offensive strategy that has the players closing their eyes and swinging for the fences no matter the situation. Polanco's bunt in the Game 2 win was a thing of beauty, it's just a shame this team has taken such a brutalist approach when batting. There's a chance they'll be better next year but they've got to embrace some change when it comes to the strikeout issue. It's why their season is over.- 126 replies
