It's no secret that the Twins have wasted years of talent of several ballplayers because they don't call up prospects until they're eligible for AARP discount cards. With that in mind, the handling of Royce Lewis after his return to St. Paul is very on-brand. Royce Lewis is the best player on the team and he's 100% healthy and ready to contribute. He's played a few games in St. Paul and has gone 3-for-9 with a double and a stolen base. He's clearly playing at full speed. Healthy. Making contact. Everything feels good, there's nothing to prove here. Twins should make a move to get Lewis in the MLB lineup as soon as possible, and the baseball world is perplexed and confused why this hasn't happened yet? Alas, for some reason, the Twins prefer to let one of the most talented players in baseball slowly rot away in a dank, dark, musty minor league stadium full of fans who only attend to watch the mascot races and celebrate children's birthday parties. Pathetic. FREE ROYCE!!!

Let's decode what we are really saying here: he's the worst pitcher on the team. This "position" you are suggesting for him doesn't exist - there's no rule that says you have to have a long-man, low-leverage guy. How about we just get a different guy? One who can pitch and get batters out? There are plenty in St. Paul and the shuttle bus runs daily. There's no reason Sands should be in a Twins uniform right now. When we start suggesting a bullpen guy needs to be a long-man, low-leverage guy, that means it's time for a move to be made.

Glad Baldelli called them out - he's rarely offered any type of criticisms, so that statement was extremely unusual. Nice to see some fire from him and from the team. I think it's way too early to say if this meeting "saved" anything. The Nats are 21-27 and will be hanging with the Marlins in the NL East cellar most of the year. Overall you have to appreciate seeing some fire, which is something that's been lacking in the Baldelli era, regardless of whether a team is struggling or not.

Watching Joey Gallo step into the box during a 9th inning rally with the game on the line made me feel relieved. You just knew he'd strike out. How does that guy still have a job? I remember the days of the "Mendoza Line" (.200) being the ultimate minimum in terms of production. These days it's almost June and we've got 3-4 players in the same game hitting .121, .171, .190, etc. No wonder fans are leaving the game. MLB has just got to figure this out.

Correa's game giving him some big WAR stats today. Game saving diving play in the 8th and a homer. Gotta be worth somethin'. Weird he wasn't in the top 3 WPA.

Guardians 11, Twins 4: The Slide Continues
bighat replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Any team that can win 12 straight and follow that up with 5 straight losses has a huge identity crisis. We can pretty clearly see now that yes, the win streak was indeed a result of historically bad competition. And it turns out that relying on guys like Ryan Jeffers and Carlos Santana to carry a team for a month is indeed unsustainable. This team could very well win 12 in a row and lose 12 in a row in the same year, would certainly be an interesting trivia footnote someday. When this team is bad, they are BAD. Buxton and Correa look old and worn out, Kirilloff's out of gas, Farmer, Margot, and Vazquez are all hitting .120....Willie Castro is a career utility guy who's got the yips and the guy needs a rest, Julien is watching Strike Three go by at historic rates....and that's what we have. Who else can the Twins count on here? A 31 year-old Max Kepler - a guy who has been a solid complimentary player most of his career? That's the best they got?- 39 replies

Game Thread: Twins (Ober) @ Guardians (Allen); 5/18 @ 5:10pm CT
bighat replied to Squirrel's topic in Archived Game Threads
I called it earlier. When this team gets cold, they really get cold. I mean look at this lineup: Margot, Farmer, Vazquez? Buxton and Correa are the only two players that would start on another MLB team. They're plumb awful, could be the worst team in the history of baseball to win 12 straight games, a future trivia question. -

bighat replied to Squirrel's topic in Archived Game Threads
With Farmer, Margot and Vazquez in the lineup and the Twins already in one of their trademark offensive cold-spells, I'm afraid this won't be pretty. Probably be Cleveland 4-1 or 3-0 or something. Ober will pitch well enough to win, it'll be close late until Jackson gives up a 2-run double in the 8th and the Twins will go down weakly in the 9th. Buxton strikes out twice and doesn't reach base, Jeffers goes 0-for-4 and the air continues to leak from the Twins balloon. -
4 runs in 4 days - no need to blame starters or bullpen for anything. Has any team that's won 12 straight NOT made the baseball playoffs? I'm sure it's happened, and if it hasn't, it just might this year. When this team falls into offensive slumps, they get REALLY cold. Unwatchable baseball this week. When's Royce back? This team has zero fire and is relying on guys who are running on fumes.

Yankees 4, Twins 0: Pablo Day Empty
bighat replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Kirilloff, Margot and Vazquez - a black hole. That's 3 innings-worth of automatic outs that the Yankees are being handed. Yankees at +102 is free money, bet the house on it.- 42 replies

Yankees 4, Twins 0: Pablo Day Empty
bighat replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Twins now 1-7 against the Yankees, Dodgers, and Orioles. The past two games they've scored 1 combined run in two games against very hittable pitchers. Maybe - and call me crazy - this team really isn't that good. Maybe that 12 game winning streak really was just because they were playing some of the worst baseball teams to take the field in the 21st century? Maybe - just maybe - relying on guys like Ryan Jeffers and Carlos Santana to carry this team on offense isn't sustainable? Stop twisting yourselves into knots trying to justify these losses. It's simple: The Twins are getting destroyed by the Yankees because the Yankees are much better than them in every category. The Twins are getting swept today. You know it, I know it, the Yankees know it, and the Twins know it. Same old story since 2002.- 42 replies

Game Thread: Yankees (Stroman) v Twins (López), 5/15 @ 6:40pm CT
bighat replied to Squirrel's topic in Archived Game Threads
The differences in the talent levels of these two teams is astounding. -
Stuffed into a locker at home on the opening game of a big series. Twins now 1-6 against the Dodgers, Orioles, and Yankees. A 12-game winning streak is nice but the results sure look different when the Twins aren't playing the Eau Claire School for the Blind for a change. How can this team can expect to win any game with Margot, Vasquez and Farmer all in the lineup at the same time? The Twins can't DFA all three guys, but it's almost June. At this point it's almost certain they are going to be forced into making a decision on at least one of them.

Jeffers is playing out of his mind, and Santana has been a nice surprise after a slow start. Correa is the steady keel guiding the ship. Julien is striking out 40% of the time, it's not sustainable. Kirilloff has to be the biggest disappointment so far, but we can add Buxton to that list. He wasn't hitting even before he went down. Starting pitching has been great. Bullpen is a "meh". The health of Royce Lewis will make or break this Twins team and determine how far they can go. Without him I don't think they win a playoff series, or perhaps won't even make the postseason. With a healthy Royce they could shock the world.

Eduardo Escobar Trade Turned Into a Coup for Minnesota
bighat replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
You're right about CES. I drafted him on my fantasy team this year, kind of a "sleeper pick" and was stoked to have him as my starting 1B. I played him a few weeks but dropped him - from a fantasy perspective, he's not even worth a bench spot at this point. We have a deep league too (12 teams) so if a player is showing any potential he's usually on someone's roster.- 28 replies

Dude, Larnach and Kirilloff are 27. Good ballplayers are in the prime of their careers right now working on making their 3rd All-Star team. Luis Arraez is 27. Austin Riley is 27. Kyle Tucker and Ozzie Albies are 27. Larnach, meanwhile, is working on how to hit a curveball. Kirilloff is working on seeing whether or not he can play 2 months without going on the IL. As I said I'm pleasantly surprised their contributions so far and think Larnach has certainly improved. But let's stop pretending Larnach and Kirilloff are part of the future. They missed their window. Let's just enjoy what they are doing now and be grateful they are finally at least contributing to the ballclub in some meaningful way. We don't have to pretend they're going to be core players moving forward, or that they have long-term futures with this ballclub to enjoy what they are doing. Every team needs back-ups, stopgaps, and fill-ins. That might be the best we can ever expect from them and we should all be OK with it, rather than trying to pretend they are the players we wish they were.

Being a "low leverage" reliever sounds like the best job in baseball! You only come into a game when you're losing or winning by 8 runs or more? Wow sign me up! Say, how many "low leverage pitchers" do the Yankees have? The Dodgers? The Braves? This is the Major Leagues, man. Every pitcher on the 40 man should be able to come in and get outs. Cole Sands should be able to get Aaron Judge out, and if he can't he shouldn't be on the roster. Okert should be able to get George Springer out. Jay Jackson should be able to get Vlad Guerrero out. Blaming the manager for playing his worst players is lazy. Rocco HAS to play Margot. He HAS to pitch Jackson and Sands. And if they can't play, they will be replaced by those who have control over that thing.

AK just doesn't seem like an everyday player. He looks tired. I think Rocco saw the same thing and is giving him some extended rest. I'm thinking we'll see AK back in the lineup this next series and if he doesn't perform well, it's going to be an IL stint. I fear AK might always be one of those "what could have been" type of guys. On the flip side, great to see other guys like Miranda and Larnach resurrecting their careers from the dead. They went from being "organizational depth" to batting in the 4-5 spots for a major league club that's on fire.

Sands has looked.....kinda like he's looked for the majority of his career. Not good indeed. Is it more likely that Sands had some kind of mental & physical breakthrough, and is on his way to becoming a dominant MLB reliever? Or that he just had a couple lucky weeks? Occam's Razor says it's the latter.

Blue Jays 10, Twins 8: Early Lead Falls Apart
bighat replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I wonder if any team who has won 5 straight series has blown a 6 run lead in a game? Seems highly improbable. Is this Twins team smoke and mirrors or the real deal? I know one thing: Cole Sands is not a guy who should be pitching in high leverage situations. He's a mop-up guy, not a fireman.- 55 replies
