  1. Nice depth to have, although if he goes to St. Paul I would play him more often than not at first base. But the Twins also have Severino on the prospect bubble. Big year for both of them and where they will be playing come 2025. Again, though, with Wallner striking out 50% of the time, and Kirilloff able to play the outfield...unless you trust Larnach, why not keep Miranda then and move Kirilloff fulltime to the outfield with Margot as the backup. Will be interesting to see how the Twins handle the one battle spot on the bench.
  2. Twins were so friggin' lucky last year, not even carrying an extra catcher on the 40-man. You still always run the risk of Jair getting injured in St. paul and how you would cover any roster addition then if you need to add back someone signed for depth. I'm really curious to see if the Twins do team up Jeffers or Vasquez as personal catchers for any particular starter, especially with one having a betetr throwing arm than the other for base stealers.
  3. I guess the strength of being a 2-way player, yes?
  4. That, and for all intent and purpose, Margot is probably just a one-season pick-up anywasy as his option year is $12m. But Taylor got greedy and ended up signing for whomever had a roster spot and some money left for his services. Something is better than...a minor league contract.
  5. Winning is NOT everything in the spring. A minor league arm can give the game away. That being said, Lopez, Doran and Topa have been far from great, might just al be working on things. But Varland, Alcala, Durate have been solid in many ways. Wallner has struck out 50%. Larnach is looking better. Humm. Otherwise, pretty comfortably with the offense. Like someone said, though...if doing a one-year pickup, Taylor would've been fine for $4m. But he waited to long to drop his expectations. Spring train is TRAINING. ime to make some adjustments, try some new things, and just prep for the long season. You don't want to give some players too many innings out of the chute, but have them on a daily workout schedule to just get into playing shape, period. And face some opposition. That isn't jsut throwing batting practice.
  6. DeScar is on staff in someway, and the 5th starter when he is ready. But Varland is in the wings as Padddack and DeScar probably won't start 45 games between the two-of-them this season.
  7. Hold back and start the season in the warmer environs of training camp if the Twins see fit (although it is WARM in Minnesota...amazingly). Then a bit of time in St. Paul. He will have to be on the roster at some point to showcase that he can handle the majors for real. I'm hoping he does return and becomes a part of the Twins bullpen for a few more seasons. Always felt he had the stuff (but maybe not total attitude) to be closer material. Maybe he will get that chance elsewhere. Maybe not. But I put more stock of him being in the pen in 25/26 than the mess of minor league free agents and aging bullpen arms that should give us at least one good season that the Twins can trot out for 2024.
  8. He is NOT on the 40-man. Even if someone goes on the IL, unles it is 60-days there is no spot. So, he will start the season at AAA and play everyday. At what position, not sure. That's the name of the game. No spot for him on the roster. No need to rush him to the majors as the roster and next-in-line is pretty much established for the half-season.
  9. We all have dream trades. Better yet, we want free agents to be signed. Yet there is always the aspect of: Does THAT free-agent want to sign and play for the Twins, no matter what the Twins might pay. Do they even listen to an offer (which usually isn't high). The Twins do have a nice core of pitchers who will be around for 2025, and three that could be around at least another two seasons. Which sets up nice for the Twins advancing a rookie into he mix each of the next few years. So picking up an arm (or two) for a season with the hopes of getting at least 20-24 starts out of them is the Twins priority at best. And they pretty much did that this season. They could still add someone not ready to start the season, like a Jake Odorizzi (or Rich Hill). But got another week or two of spring games before any panic that they don't have five starters for the first month of the season. They sure did manage to grab enough bullpen arms between those signed strictly for the majors and a few stashed at St. Paul.
  10. You do want to send 40-man guys out sooner rather than later. If they get disabled in spring training, If they get disabled in a spring game before being optioned out, they remain in major league land and gain service time.
  11. I'm curious to see his 2024. He has been lights out in spring training. I hated 2023 when he was brought in with a man on in extra inning games. He more often than not had a tendency to put a man or two on base in a good many of his outings. He seemed to do better when he could start an inning. My only disappointment with him was that I was hoping, with his work as a starter, to be a guy who would regularly pitch thru the batting order once, be that long relief guy.
  12. AA and Major Leagues are two different arenas. Happily Spirng Training happens. Hope he gets to play more often against the major league pitchers. And have that coach carefully watching how he swings and what pitches he needs to lay-off of.
  13. This is one the Twins could afford to let get away!
  14. He is still in the prospect list as a starter. The Twins are at least hoping he can be a multi-inning bullpen guy, able to face batters from both sides of the plate. If he can do that, he has a home in the majors, even if NOT as a starter. AT worse, he becomes a situational lefthander and enjoys a long career.
  15. This is a solid draft class, considering the talent that has moved on. Most of these guys might need to be considered for protection from the Rule 5 this off-season. Or made available for further trades. And also makes you realize how many players from any draft class MAY make the majors. And it is NOT always just the guys on top.
  16. No. His mix is best when he throws a max of 35-40 pitches, preferably less. I'm still not sure I like the idea of him having to get even four outs for the team, when the need arises. This is a pivotal year. Can he hold down the closers role so the Twins will consider extending him for 5-6 years as such an arm. The only otehr choice right now might be developing Canterino as a future closer, although I would currently ry and stretch him out for a starter...see if that can happen. But he is still a solid season away from contributing to the pen. Otherwise, no, to ax, Thielbar, Stewart as longterm closers.
  17. Sano took off nearly 60 pounds before reporting to spring training. Now if he can jsut stop swinging at those low and outside pitches.
  18. The Twins have decent minor league depth at all positions. And the goodness is that they are pretty much just prospects developed by the Twins. They have signed just north of a dozen minor league free agents, a very small number, this season! Of course, you still need a 40-man roster spot, and even though I can see 12-14 names THAT MIGHT NOT be on the 40-man come next November, there is only one, at best two, that could be jettisoned, if no one moves to the 60-day.
  19. If the Twins weren't paying Big Bucks for Correa and Buxton, their team salary would be even lower. The Twins are doing just fine, prepping for future increases, ways to keep current players perhaps.
  20. depth for callups all across the board. If they have any issues, there is really only one name on the 40-man that could be jettisoned if you need to bring up a non-roster guy.
  21. Hey, you work on stuff in spring games. Throwing against players that aren't on your time. Say Duran wants to develope a breaking pitch. He goes out and basically throws in all over the place to all his batters to see how they react. Learn places NOT to throw it in the end. Do you want people stealing bases senselessly yet? Crashing into the fence? It is Spring Training games.
  22. The Twins are sitting very comfortably in Payroll Land for years to come. The Payroll should go up significantly, as long as the Twins win. A television contract will materialize. Sometimes I wonder what it would cost for even local television play. Can you easily sell, what, $100k, $300k, $500k a game in advertising, sponsorship dollars. Yes, Correa was a big expense. We complain that the Twins don't sign big, but we always need to understand that giving out big contracts keep you from giving other big contracts. The Twins also invested in Buxton They will also have to invest in other players. But development on-the-farm looks decent and there are other teams who win with payrolls significantly smaller than the Twins. The current team can pretty much stay intact with arbitration salaries up into 2026. In 2027 current players could be expensive, but also could be traded for other players, and replaced by talent in the system. I'm trusting the front office. I think their gaffe, though, as telling us they were cutting the budget rather than just doing whatever they were going to do. Their justification for cutting the budget because of TV is moot because they at least got TV money for 2024. But it sure didn't spark enthusiasm fo season ticket sales coming off a championship season.
  23. He needs to get comfortable covering ground in centerfield, and also get exposure to playing that position at Target Field. Spring Training will determine if he is the Twins's fourth outfielder. I, sadly, don't see him being a regular in the infield. His place of play will be in the outfield if he wishes to be a regular. Can Buxton stay in center of be foced to a corner. Kepler will be gone in '25. Wallner is still a work that needs progress. So a job is there, even if it means being an all-around utility guy for 2024. At worse, play him everyday in St. Paul if you grab a Michael Taylor for another one-year contract.
  24. I'm curious to see how the lineup plays out. Where does Buxton place (perhaps as low as...9th). Julien/Correa/Lewis I see as 1-2-3. Not sure who will be 4th on a regular basis. Brock Stewart nowhere to be seen? I would expect 150+ innings more out of Ober than DeScalfani or Paddack in 2024. (Barring injury, of course). With Varland definitely being the "next" to be called up.
  25. Liam Hendriks signed two-year deal with the Red Sox! https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/02/red-sox-close-to-deal-with-liam-hendriks.html
