If Kepler is injured, could the Twins bring up another pitcher?

I think the Twins may be giving Duarte a chance to be a starter if an opening happens. Look for him to be pushed to three innings next time someone goes short.

Week in Review: Series Win and a Serious Loss
Rosterman replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Not recognizing that Ober just didn't have it and leaving him out there beyond the five runs, especially coming off of solo home runs, is on the manager and coaching staff. You ahd the pitchers to use with an off day. Also, clearly seeing that attacking the Royals pitcher wasn't working and NOT readjusting your batters is also on the staff watching the game. You have to adjust when playing the game, often sooenr rather than later. Not just ... let's keep with the plan. -
One had hopes for Gil but not sure if he would've mae the Twins 40-man after COVID. Burdi falls into that "what if" category. He got away because he was injured. Same could said for Enlow, deciding to go elsewhere rather than settle in for anotehr year as a non-roster prospect for the Twins. Canterino might fall into the same boat. Sometimes you move on and let anotehr team worry about rostering the guy at some point, knowing that you can always resign them (maybe) if they don't come back from injury right away. The careful monitoring, or knowing when to trade or pull the plug. Balazovic is another example. Could've been a major trade piece at one point, now everyone passed on the opportunity. SOmetimes pitchers have opportunities thrust at them, sometimes, they miss the boat. Remember that Glen Perkins was a failed starter who was dropped from the 40-man and every team passed, yet he stayed with the Twins and found a new life. And yet arms like Hendricks do walk away, have a little up, and little down, and you wonder why the Twins just didn't stash him at the back of the pen. Wait, arbitration clock and dollars start and that also causes a parting of ways before they actually become excellent.

Instead of money coming back, the Twins basically paid $4m for the Mariners to take Polanco, but got a possible TOP prospect in return. The trade will pay off if Topa ends up pitching well. But also goes to show that you can't have too many players, sometimes. Polanco playing third now for the Twins, although the question remains who wouldn't have made the 40-man out of spring training if Polanco was still around, so that alone was a reason to trade Jorge. But the Twins better start looking long and hard at pitchers they get in trade, or jsut stick to small deals with minor league free agents with potential. Happily this guy isn't eating up a 40-man roster spot in-the-end. But, still.....

St Paul Saints Announce 2024 Roster

9 minor free agent pitchers. Happily rotation arms are fairly home grown (not counting guys the Twins got in trades and have developed beyond a season). Everyone on the field side looks to get play everyday.- 37 replies

St Paul Saints Announce 2024 Roster
Rosterman replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
It's not so much the organization respects what he has done, as much as they are paying him no matter what he does do. Thankfully he is working hard to come back and maybe, just maybe, throw from the major league mound again. Of course, that would mean finding a spot on the 4o-man, or tantalizing another team to take on his salary. I do hope he does return. He's a good guy and all.- 37 replies

1976 Topps and the Minnesota Twins
Rosterman commented on Al from SoDak's blog entry in Al from SoDak
I liked the overall design. And most of the cards had the players in a positional pose, so-to-speak. Always man argument. Do we want player headshots, posed shots (as many of these were), or action shots (often obscuring faces), or shots of playings, like the Carew one, doing...nothing/something. Plus, team cards. Always loved these, and yet hated these. Depended on the info on the back. Faces so small. But often the only way a manager got recognition. And yes, at the end of the year got double-cards of some players with the Topps Traded Series with the headline box. Oh, that famous Oscar Gamble card.- 4 comments

Injuries to Track on the Twins Opening Day Roster
Rosterman replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The scary part will be freeing up 40-man spots. The Twins are pretty good for backups right now at all the position spots. But, by chance, they lose Camargo at St. paul, and have to add a catcher to replace the major league guys...roster spot. Right now, they might have one rotating roster spot for up-and-down minor league guys NOT on the 40-man. But then you have to judge the ability to send them abck thru waivers, if necessary.- 14 replies

That the Twins do have an abundance of veteran and prospect arms to choose from is really a plus. The pain is the lack of space on the 40-man at the moment. Every spot is valuable. I want to see Scott Blewett in the pen at some point!
-
Weiss will go on the 60-day if they wish to pay him. Not sure if they can release him. Also, Duran could easily be out for two months just to be safe. He can start rehabbing whenever in Florida and would serve a couple of weeks on a minor league stint before needing activation. But, no, I don't see him being back before June 1.

I'd take 51-35 with an ERA under four for all five starters anyday. Lotsa homers here. 215 for sure, according to ESPN. Looks like the Twins won't be setting a new record for strikeouts.

Former Twins, Where are they now? 2024 edition
Rosterman replied to stringer bell's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Well, Escobar (Blue Jays), Cron (Red Sox) and Leon (Royals) are all free-agents again. -
The Twins have the rotation arms of Lopez, Ryan, Ober and Varland tied to the team at least thru the 2027 season at predictable costs. Throw in Duran, and Jax...well, Twins look pretty good in pitching land with a good level of prospects coming into the mix starting in 2026. Jeffers, Kirilloff, Jensen, Lewis, Wallner are also controllable thru those seasons. Ad well as the expensive contracts for Correa and Buxton. The Twins could totally have a new outfield by the time 2026 comes around, and those guys would be playing strong for 5-6 seasons. Throw Lee into the mix. If the Twins can carve out some extra funds, they will have a dynasty easily.

I wanna work for someone that will cover $4.5 million of my bad gambling debts.

Yikes - Ouch. Not only was the pitching bad, but the hitting almost worse. Happens. Even during the regular season. Have to let Varland see how he handles getting out of such messes. Lots of singles with those walks. Alcala, too, got hit.

Twins Minor League Transactions (2023-24)

Twins cut loose Ernie Yake. Talk about a guy who travelled through many minor league stops each of his three seasons in the organization. Did everything they asked of him. -
Twins 2024 Position Analysis: Starting Pitcher
Rosterman replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
As long as health isn't an issue. I see all of Lopez, Ryan and Ober getting up towards 180+ innings and making their regular turns in the rotation. I also think Varland is capable of fulltime seasonal work. I love watching Ryan and Varland work. Ryan, when he can set the timing of a game, is a gem. He needs to work on crafty pitching locations, maybe make Vasquez his regular catcher. You will give up his, but don't let it affect your timing. The homer-run ball still happens. But I ike that he will chalenge a hitter. Same can be said for Varland. No one works faster than Varland. And he, too, will challenge the hitter. But if he can keep the hitter off-balance, watch out. Sure, we maight've like to see him start the season and egt real comfortable in St. Paul. He still could, if the Twins want to pitch him that way for the first 10-12 days before coming across town. Paddack will be fine, but I see a max of 25 starts and maybe 130+ innings at best. What then? Some bullpen work? Hopefully we have someone at St. Paul capable of settling into the rotation. Woods Richardson, Headrick, Festa are all on the lightrail if the time comes. Dbnak could still be a player. Be curious to see what the rotation is in St. Paul. Too bad about Canterino. Was hoping he might blossom into someone other than the next Burdi of the Twins. One could've dreamed. A one-year flyer on Blake Snell for $32m...humm, I would've gone for it, even with the second year option that he would walk from if he pitches great. Who would've thought.- 31 replies

Man, if I knew you could take a one-year $32m flyer on Snell, I might've gone for it. Even if you had to absorb the second year.

1968 Topps and the Minnesota Twins
Rosterman commented on Al from SoDak's blog entry in Al from SoDak
I always loved the early Topps cards. They would take photographs of the players during the spring training, but also always take a photo of them without a hat on, in case the player was traded between the end of the photograph season and when the cards were issued. Also remember that often it was a even series release. Every four weeks they would send out a new batch of cards to correspond wqith the checklist. And often the print runs of the cards would be smaller as each series was released. This was a fun series of All-Stars and was a popular way to play one of the many games at the time. The other was just using dice and your own team of baseball card greats.- 4 comments

Larnach and Miranda Optioned. Balazovic Reassigned
Rosterman replied to stringer bell's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
We will see what the final week brings. I was almost wondering if Larnach was going to beat out Wallner, since Wallner still has options. Or even Miranda making the club and pushing Kirilloff to the outfield. The Twins really don't need a 5th starter until twice thru the first four, so Varland could work out of the pen. Sands might be a stay because he is considered a long relief pitcher. Fundeburk got hit for two runs, in his second inning out, that came around because the bullpen arm after him gave up a homer rather than egt out of the inning. So the question is who in the bullpen is capable of pitching a second inning, to be sure. Heck, maybe someone goes on the 60-day and the Twins can keep a Boyle or Duarte...but not a Jensen.
