Former Twins, Where are they now? 2024 edition
Rosterman replied to stringer bell's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Austin Price, who pitched 32 games in relief for the Saints last season, signed with the Phillies. -
Was just thinking that the Twins do have some SS depth for trading. This guy, as well as Miller, have TOP Prospect value written all over them ... now. Sadly, both are probably three years away from coming to the majors. A rebuilding team like, say, the A's could find some value. TRhe Twins already have a logjam in the infield and NO clear paths about who will be playing where. At what point does Correa move from shortstop. And then where, third base? Is Lewis the future second baseman? Is Julien a longterm guy, and will he end up at first base, or become a valuable radechip himself if he puts together a solid 2024. Right now out infield seems to be made up of guys who aren't playing positions they will be playing someday soon. It then questions where you play certain guys in the minors. Like Lee, keep him at short and move Correa to third next season?

Can the Twins get a solid 30 starts out of Lopez, Ryan, Ober. 150+ innings for sure. That will be the key. They can live with fewer innings from Paddack, perhaps...and even DeSclafani. But would that result be moving either to the pen and also having the free 26-man roster spot to cycle thru Varland, Woods Richardson, Headrick or perhaps someone not on th Vare 40-man? If you can't get 5 innings from a starter, who is the long guy? Winder, Balazovic, Sands, Alcala, Headrick were the only guys that really threw significant multiple inning stints last season, and all seem bound for St. Paul. Okert is a nice addition, but he seems a situational lefty. I had hoped Jax, as a starter prospect, could be a multi-inning guy, but he tends to be a one inning stopper now (as long as no one is on base). But besides having a pen with ALL guys with ERAs south of 4.00 this season, there is promise of shuffling with St. Paul with a couple of names of promise: Weiss, Jensen, Duarte, Bowman, Harris, Alexy and moe...but they are NOT on the 40-man (or Weiss is holding that "swing spot" right now). Barring a major injury to the Big Three in the rotation, the Twins are sitting pretty good in pitching land!

That That he holds a distinction of being on the 40-man roster. A unqiue group of inididuals who have held that spot, but never actually played for the Twins. -
Front Office thoughts, in light of the Gordon trade
Rosterman replied to ashbury's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
It was a curious transaction. Was there a spot for Gordon? What was his worth? Did the Twins seek out another left-handed arm for the bullpen? Who made overtures to each other first...Miami looking for a low-cost infielder/bench bat.? Or the Twins seeing too many lefties on the Marlins roster? I still think Gordon was being made available for a modest return sa the Twins elt there were others to replace him. Assuming, of course, that Kyle Farmer stays with the team, and that is ALMOST a lock with the two-year extension. Things have now become quite complicated. Is there ANYONE who could go on the 60-man list? Of course, things like this occur in spring training. If the Twins added a bench bat, who would be dropped from the 18, or would it come from the pen. If the Twins also added a starter, who else would be removed from the roster. Right now, with Weiss sitting on the 40-man, the Twins basically have ONE roster spot that can be a swing thru if they decide to rotate anyone thru for the bullpen. Not much left to tinker with, without making hardline decisions on Sands, Winder, Headrick. -
The 2024 Fates of the "Forgotten Twins"
Rosterman commented on NishiokaStan's blog entry in Northern Platitudes
I belioeve Alcala can still return to the minors to start to figure things back out totally? Jose Miranda will get refular tme at third base, but especially first base, in St. Paul. And Trevor Larnach will get to try and hit his way back into the Twins pitcher at St. Paul. -
Predicting the Twins' Top 5 Prospects in 2026
Rosterman replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
The decisions the Twins have to make on so many CURRENT players come, say, 2026 is amazing. Except for all the aging bullpenners they have recently signed, a good portion of the roster will be ehre for 3-4 years, as well as a half-dozen guys who will get a taste this year before attempting to break into fulltime duty in 2025. You gave away the top choice before TD wrote about him! Arghhhh!- 20 replies

Casey Lawrence and Sean Poppen sign with the Mariners. Poppen came up thru the Twins system. Lawrence was signed as a minor league free agent during the COVID season. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/02/mariners-sign-casey-lawrence-sean-poppen-to-minor-league-deals.html -
So the arm express now contains Weiss, Staumont, Headrick, Fundeburk, Woods Richardson, Varland before the Twins need to dip into names like Henriquez, Dobnak, Alexy, Harris, Bowman, Solomon, Boushley, Gunkel, Jensen, Laweryson, Boyle amongst others on the light-rail shuffle. Sometimes wonder if they would take all the money spent on such players and just get THE ONE.

Twins didn't have much luck with Weiss when he was a minor league free agent back in 2019.

Brooks Lee is the one that will make the Twins make BIG choices going forwards. Does he play shortstop, moving Correa to third base? Does that mean Lewis goes to second. Does Julien become a first baseman? Where do the Twins put Austin Martin. Better yet, what is the longterm fate of Alex Kirilloff and Jose Miranda. Severino anyone? Prato? All those shortstops like Noah Miller become expendable if Lee is the real deal? You got names like Jenkins, Rodriguez and Gonzalez now as replacements in the outfield the next 3-4 years for sure. Schobel,. DeAndrade, Keaschall are all potential middle infielders. The Twins have riches beyond compare.

Twins Daily 2024 Top Prospects: #9 Brandon Winokur, SS/CF
Rosterman replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
I'm salivating at what the Twins do have in the system when most of the current players have earned out their status as we approach 2026-28, The Twins won't have to trade prospects, just guys either espensive in arbitration or possible free agents as the years roll on. -
Baltimore is getting Corbin Burnes
Rosterman replied to Cory Engelhardt's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Sure, it could be a high=price to play for one year of a soon to be expensive free agent. But the Twins could've pulled it off, easily...considering what Baltimore gave the Brewers. -

What Does It Take To Be A Major League Manager?
Rosterman commented on Paul D's blog entry in Paul Danesi
The Twins have had their own share. Cookie Lavagetto had a decent career on the field. Sam Mele, too. Cal Ermer, like the later Tom Kelly, paid his dues in the minors. Billy Martin was one of many infielders to helm the Twins, all so-so players overall: Billy Gardner, Frank Quilici, Gene Mauch, Bill Rigney, Ron Gardenhire, Johnny Goryl. Rocco Baldelli and Paul Molitor ae both the best hitters, although one played 2,164 more games than the other. Remember the pitching guru Ray Miller, one of the finest pitching coaches in the game, but never managed to become a manager of note (how many pitchers become managers?). These days, a manager is only as good as their overly large coaching staff. Once upon a time three coaaches were enough, or four for the early decades in Twins-land. Now you have, what, 8-9...is there a 10th body in there somewhere? -
Carmargo is a nice depth piece who should egt regular play at St. Paul to really prove his worth. Can he call a game, hold runners, and continue to hit for power? Right now, he is the best catcher. ANd onlyt needed if something happens to the two in the majors. Canterino, Rodriguez, Martin all have future potential. Unless Martin shines, and Buxton doesn't play in centerfield, I expect those three, along with Severino, to showcase their work in the minors. The biggest question is where you play Martin? And where do the Twins play Larnach? Severino will play first, some third, and hopefully hit and become either the DH of the future, or a solid tradechip. I look at the batch of Balazovic, Jensen, Sands Staumont, Winder and Gordon, and even possibly Headrick, as not being anywhere on the Twins 40-man come next off-season, which means they sink or swim by how they play for their future in baseball today. Balazovic and Gordon are out of options and will probably be given every chance to shine, although if I was the Twins I would be dangling either in some sort of trade package. Yes, all COULD play at the major league level and contribute in some way. They are on the 40-man have had time in the majors, so that is their one plus.

Twins Daily 2024 Top 20 Prospects: Honorable Mentions
Rosterman replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
I enjoyed this recap of names on the cusp, especially those already at St. Paul. Makes me wonder that the Twins may remain light on minor league free agents, sitting around four so far this seaason instead of the near 30 they have signed each of the past few. I like to think that names like WIlliams, Keirsey, Goodrum, Helman, Prato are just as worthy as Harlick, Luplow, Stevenson to play in the majors if push comes to shove. Not to mention the stockpile of relief arms (who will be in the Saints rotation in 2024?) in the twin city. If all works out for 2024, the Twins roster at the major league level could be pretty well set for the next few years with the only consideration given to arbitration salaries and who is in reserve. Always need depth at every position, and Twins are getting closer to dealing from some minor league strengths if some "top" prospects can develop more than they have. Considering the dozen guys that need to find space at St. paul and Wichita, the Twins top two teams look pretty solid going forwards.- 13 replies

Well, the Twins need a guy capable of eating some innings? Can DeSclafani do it? Leaving Varland in the wings if Paddack breaks down, perhaps. It fills the need for a fifth starter and depth for the rotation pushing Varland down a notch and letting us hope Festa, Canterino, maybe even Dobnak or Woods Richardson will be part of the answer as the season rolls along. Another bullpen arm for the 8th position in the pen. Allows the Twins to option out a couple of current roster guys, if need be. Four players for one. Polanco had no position if Julien is the second baseman and you are looking for a place for Lee going forwards. Doesn't really add payroll to the Twins, either. But didn't cut payroll at all. Two prospects, neither of whom need to be added to the 40-man anytime soon.
