Twins Trade Candidate: Gio Urshela
gman replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think most of the team will be unsettled (at best) to start the year due to inexperience and injuries. Urshela, if someone beats him out for a starting role, can easily be a veteran back up or provide trade value. I see a similar position for Kepler next year. The Twins could certainly use capable veteran depth when they get ready to make any kind of run.- 34 replies

The 3 Most Probable Twins Trade Targets at Shortstop
gman replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Another target could be Nicki Lopez from Kansas City. He splits his time between shortstop and second with good fielding stats at both. Although last year was not a good one for him offensively, in 2021 he was top 5 in hitting in the American league. With Bobby Witt, probably the future shortstop for KC, along with Aldaberto Mondesi coming off the IL and also Maikel Garcia that both play the position, KC has the position well covered. Garcia is rated has the #5 prospect in the KC system. I'm only guessing but there appears to be an abundance of shortstops in KC for the position. -
Reviewing 2022 Performances by Twins Shortstop Prospects
gman replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
I think the person who plays the most games at shortstop next year is currently in the Twins system. Lewis is probably the closest. It is highly likely that there is an intermediate signing or trade this winter. The worst intermediate option would be A Gordon/Polanco/Urshela combination for the seasons firsts 2-3 months. That would almost assuredly sink the whole year. I also think the current Twins system provides the player(s) who play the most games at shortstop over the next 10 years. My pick for long term would be Noah Miller. He has the history from High School through the minors of sticking at shortstop, gaining defensive experience and not being moved around to different positions. He has provided good defense at the position in his short professional career. At the plate, while needing a lot of work, has demonstrated patience has exhibited by his 76 walks in 469 plate appearances. At 6'1' and 190lbs he appears to be big enough to ultimately provide solid extra base hitting from the position. I think he should be advanced a level at the start of next year or soon there after. I could see him making his first appearance in the majors during the 2024 season at the age of 22.- 22 replies

Twins AFL Report (Week 2): Austin Martin is Blowing Up
gman replied to Steve Lein's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
I like the fact that he is hitting 500 (SSS) with walks and stolen bases. Not everyone has to swing for the fences. Also Julien is doing similar things with fewer plate appearances. I would like to see them both at the top of the order but not sure where either will play. I watched a couple of AFL games with Martin at shortstop. One game he looked doable, the other a little rough. Just hasn't played enough at the position.- 27 replies

Why Would the Twins Pay Anyone but Carlos Correa?
gman replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The Astros didn't think he was worth it and they are more World Series prepped than the Twins. Turns out they had a shortstop who was good enough to at least help them to the Al division series. If the Twins definitely proved to have a complete team ready to compete for a World Series title, I might consider signing Correa to a large contract. But remember he also said "The reason I don't steal bases anymore is that I am trying to save my legs to last a couple more years at shortstop." The only stolen base attempt i saw him make this year and he came up at second kind of gimpy as he hobbled back to the dugout. Could have just been a coincidence.- 86 replies

Big Questions on a Pair of Relievers
gman replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I expect Enlow will be on the 40 man roster next year and will be working as a starter for the season.. His 2019 year at adv A ball was very good. He lost a year in 2020 like everyone else in the minors. When he returned in 2021, he started off great if for only 21 innings before he went down with elbow surgery. Until that point his walks per nine was about 2.2 showing, very good control. Last year as is typical of post tommy john surgery his walk rate was closer to 4.7/9. i think he has a bright future as a starter in the Twins org.- 19 replies

Arreaz stat line 366/421/862 with 39 RBI's with runners in scoring position. Problem only 105 plate appearances with runners in scoring position. A 37% success rate. Another problem he had 388 appearances with no one on base. Miranda stat line 272/328/744 with 46 rbi's in 128 appearances runners in scoring position. A 36% success rate. 255 appearances with bases empty. Buxton stat line 145/280/635 with 9 rbi's in 68 appearances with runners in scoring position. A 13% success rate. Correa stat line 274/366/730 with 30 rbi's in 116 appearances with runners in scoring position. A 26% success rate. Seems like the real stats speak very well of Arreaz. Maybe he should bat 3rd.

Twins Daily 2022 Awards: Most Valuable Player
gman replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I have been a pro-Arreaz fan since he made his A ball appearance. He would have had my MVP vote if I had seen the vote being taken. My personal ranking would have been Arreaz, Correa, Miranda. I also think some how he should also be an assistant hitting coach on this team. He could teach a lot to many other team hitters. With a healthy Polanco & Miranda hitting behind him all year he could possible have scored 50 runs more. I would much prefer to see the team full of players that know how to hit instead of just swing hard- 33 replies

The Minnesota Twins' 2023 Payroll Preview
gman replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The roster is filled with talent. But as with Buxton for 8 years now, will the talent be converted to wins. Even with everyone showing up healthy next year, we have many players who still need to play to or arrive at the expected (hoped for) level of talent. If they get close to their expected talent level, I wouldn't expect them to bust out of the starting gates, but rather a slow build of momentum with gained experience fueled by talent. I think there are many on team side who are just as frustrated by their injuries as fans are. Yes, Correa got $35mil from the Twins, but I don't think he showed up just for the check. I think he also looked at the talent of the roster and expected the team to be able to go much further. Any team he signs with is going to have to have a roster with long term high expectations (5 + years), as well as a big paycheck. -

Well the Twins and Red Sox finished tied at 78 wins for 13th fewest. Somebody could get lucky in the new draft lottery system next year. -
Should The Twins Look to Upgrade From Kyle Garlick?
gman replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I wouldn't keep Garlic on the 40 man roster. Of our other 2 right handed outfielders Buxton is only part time and Celestino needs to complete his training in the minors. Our other minor league options are also lefthanded except someday possibly Martin. Anybody know why Rucker was pushed so fast to St Paul?- 43 replies

How Can the Twins Front Office Regain Twins Fans Favor?
gman replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Well management could put their foot down and tell all players no getting hurt next year. Fundamentals look much better when you have the same 26 players playing the same roles day after day. It's called a team. But when your team averages 3 new faces every week, kind of hard to get any consistency. I wouldn't resign Correa. He's not a bad player, but this team won't afford to give one player a quarter of the payroll and be good long term. The Twins aren't the Dodgers and never will be. Anyone who wants to see a team with a $300mil payroll should just watch the Yankees or Dodgers. I have been a Twins fan for over 60 years. There have been worst times. I don't watch the games for the management, which I think has done a good job. At least compared to the previous 30 years under Ryan. I'm optimistic that the next few years could be some of the best baseball we've seen for quite awhile with the accumulated talent on the roster, if HEALTHY.- 66 replies

My Pitching Profiling- Part 1 intro/ SP/ RP
gman commented on Doctor Gast's blog entry in Doctor Gast's Blog
I'd look at 2 different rotation. A five man starting group with expectations of completing 5 innings and possibly 6 on a limited basis. A second rotation of 3 long relievers throwing up to 3 innings per outing every 4 days. That leaves 5 pitchers to cleanup and closeout games. Probably too simple. -
Review the Debuts: Twins Rookie Position Players
gman replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It looks like Miranda, Lewis & Wallner can be future starters or at least near full time backups. All got their chances somewhat early because of injuries but they look like faces we will see regularly going forward. Hopefully 2-3 more new players of equal talent show up in 2023.- 35 replies

Review the Debuts: Twins Rookie Pitchers
gman replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Duran's debut was probably best since there is a large sample size to evaluate. To return to starting, he probably needs to be convinced to take 5-8mph off his pitches. His arm didn't hold up to starting in the minors and probably can't in the majors. He has great breaking pitches to go with his fastball, but he would have to learn to pitch in a manner that allows his arm to hold up i longer outings. I do like that two of our best rookie pitchers actually debuted last year, Jax and Ryan.- 31 replies

Correa couldn't find a buyer last winter at 10 years and $350mil so high probability he won't this year either. Three teams looking at the free agents shortstops more than likely will resign their own guys, which their fans know rather than sign someone new. The Yankees could have signed someone last winter if they were in that market, so I think they will go with their top prospects next year. I don't think the Cubs have enough talent to attract Correa so I don't think he'll go there. Philadelphia made it as a wild card this year, but have to compete with the Mets and Braves. I think that is the most likely place for him to wind up.

Cleaning Up the Twins’ 40-Man Roster Will Take Some Work
gman replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The Twins need a start of year shortstop( assuming Correa gone and Lewis still rehabbing) along with a solid backup catcher( preferably left-handed/w good defense). They also will need all the controllable pitchers they can keep their hands on(expected injuries). Spare replacement level or less outfielders and middle infielders not so much, but a good backup outfielder won't hurt either.- 59 replies

Sign him as the potential starting third baseman and security blanket. If others show up healthy and playing well, then he could be moved next year at the trade deadline. If he's the worst player on your roster then you're in good shape.

Prospect Retrospective: Simeon Woods Richardson
gman replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I hope he gets 3-4 good innings in this year and go home for the winter with a good feeling with the experience. I'd like to see him get 75-100 innings next year with the Twins. -
Reevaluating Minnesota’s 3 Young Outfielders
gman replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I wouldn't expect to see Kirilloff before mid June. They don't need him to start the year, but when he shows up they do need him to be healthy. Wallner I think will start in St Paul and probably go back and forth all year. They do need Larnach to be healthy and hitting from the word go. They do need some power in that lineup. Can't plan on Buxton for more than 3-4 games a week. Celestino needs to develop at triple A, maybe Gordon can play center 2-3 games a week.- 43 replies

Carlos Correa Makes His Decision Clear
gman replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Every team needs to develop a winning team identity. The Twins will never be the Dodgers, Yankees or Red Sox when it comes to sloshing money around to try to win. Throwing 10 years and 350 million at anyone? Don't hold your breath. Teams like St Louis & Tampa Bay have got strategies that work for them. The Twins need to be closer to that mold. Correa was a drawing card for one year, that's it. Most teams won't give that much money to one player, unless they don't expect to develop good players and having a winning team for 10 years. -
Thank you for writing an article based on positives. Too many articles on this site are based on moaning and bitching and looking for someone to blame. Even most of the responses to this article are nothing but complaining. Even I am complaining about all the bitching. There were a lot of things that were positive. These Twins were picked to finish third in this division this year. They may finish second. They built 80% of a good pitching staff. Ryan, Ober & Winder with perhaps Varland, look like they can be strong solid starters. Miranda and Wallner can add middle of the order bats. Gordan appears to have found himself. Adding three consistent players to the lineup. Duran, Jax, Thielbar, Lopez & Moran & maybe Henriquez can be most of a very good bullpen. If we add back all the guys in the hospital, I think this team wins the division next year. Plus there will be 6-8 guys in the minors creeping up on the major league roster. I am looking forward to watching this team over the next couple of years, hopefully with the same manager, coaches and front office. At the end of the day, I think this team has a lot of positives going for it.

Contemplating Max Kepler's Future
gman replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Looking at Kepler's career, he has only had one good year. RF has usually been reserved for hitters, not good field no hit guys. In 2019, Kepler led off and hit the pitchers first pitch fastball into the seats. That pretty much is it for his career and the pitchers figured him out. Before that he was a 230 hitter and since he has been a 220 hitter. I think everyone thought he should have been better.Time for him to move over or out and make room for others,
