  1. What a man! Lopez has the season of his life, signs a long-term contract, and is still working hard to improve. I hope his attitude is contagious!
  2. Lots of wins by an unwatchable team won't keep me subscribing to MLB.TV. If it's just wins, I can check the box score and don't have to endure 2.5 hours of tedious home-run derby. I watch games for exciting plays; neither homeruns nor strikeouts qualifies.
  3. I assume that the Dodgers are betting that the soft salary cap will be gone by the time they end up paying the big money so they will escape any penalty other than wasting the money of someone who can easily afford to feed his vanity with such contracts. Or maybe that inflation will explode and the other $680 million will be pocket change. I chuckle every time Dodger owner Todd Boehly's Chelsea side embarrass themselves (now in 12th place, closer to relegation than to Champions League).
  4. Perhaps if he's unhappy he would waive his no-trade clause and let the Twins escape some of the burden of his contract.
  5. This is a great point. Unlike any other position on the field, the catcher plays a critical role in making the pitching effective. The Twins had great pitching last year and none of us really knows how much of that was due to Jeffers, how much to Vazquez, and how much independent of catching.
  6. Umm. Castro? Or are we trading for a Castillo?
  7. I'm not sure how much it matters, which I guess puts me in the "stand pat" camp. Barring disaster (e.g., injuries) they will win the AL Central. Playoff success, now that we are not guaranteed automatic losers in the first round, is all about the luck of playing your best at the right time. None of the division winners made the WS last year, and this is not unusual. It could easily happen that the Twins unload potentially excellent prospects for someone who adds 2-3 wins and allows them to win the division by 10 games instead of 7. But it's what he does during the postseason that matters at this point. Another Gray-quality pitcher would likely make a difference, but I'm not sure we can afford (in prospects or cash) anyone with a high probability of matching Gray's 2023 performance, which was far better than his "typical year." Maybe we'll get lucky and Ober, Ryan, or one of the younger pitchers will make that step up??
  8. Indeed. But I want to see them do it on the Twins' budget!
  9. Is "none of the above" an option? I'd love to get out of the strikeout syndrome and start seeing more true hitters like Lewis, Julien, and (I miss him!) Arraez in the lineup!
  10. We had really good success last year with Lewis, Wallner, and Julien. Was this just luck? Did we promote all of the MLB-worthy prospects and none of the rest has the potential to be as good? Or is the Twins pipeline finally doing its job of bringing along talent to add to the top club? I guess we'll find out soon enough! It's worth noting that the top 7 Twins OPS players last season have never played an inning in any other organization. Not many winning teams can say that.
  11. And it seems like he managed to keep air in Sano's balloon while he was here. It deflated (or burst) shortly after Cruz's departure. Following that line of thinking, it's amazing how few times I've thought about Sano in the last year!
  12. Yes. I love reading good things about our prospects. So do the devoted fans of 29 other teams. We do seem to have a good crop coming up and a few of them have been effective with the Twins. Yet the expert rankings of our minor-league system do not put us close to #1, so I take it all with a healthy (or perhaps unhealthy, sodium!) grain of salt.
  13. In thinking about this, I found myself wondering how much of a premium we would be paying just for an extra MPH or two. Suppose that a pitcher had Duran's record with a 98 MPH fastball. Would we be thinking about these numbers? I'm not into paying for extra MPH unless it is reflected in extra outs. And I do worry a lot about the injury threat of that kind of wear on the arm.
  14. I agree. Let's not forget that the Twins had the SEVENTH best record out of 15 American League teams. They would NOT have made the postseason with their record in any other division. And by having extra games against their pathetic division rivals, they played the EASIEST schedule in the league. I'm happy that we were better than before, but not getting too far out over my skis at this point.
  15. What if he goes in and tells Boston, "I'll come, but I want you to hire Falvey, too, in a partnership like we had in Minnesota"?
  16. Ha! I'll believe healthy seasons from Buxton, Lewis, and Correa when I see them. I really don't want the Twins to count on that. Try to build a roster that doesn't need more than about one of these guys healthy in order to win.
  17. Yes. Not a single single on Wednesday! Atrocious!
  18. Fourteen strikeouts and ZERO singles! Lucky to be in the game at the end. Unwatchable!!! Twins playing HR derby again instead of baseball.
  19. Or maybe that's why they activated Buxton. He might pitch the 8th and save Castro for the ninth.
  20. Rocco's expression seems to say, "Yup, this is what we expected."
