  1. I agree with most of what you say, Nick, But I think that one sentence is missing a clarification: "Lineup" has to mean hitting and DEFENSE! Their inability to field easy balls gives the opponents 4 and sometimes 5 outs in multiple innings of games. And every walk or single by even an average-speed batter becomes a double when we can't defend against the running game. And then I always have to go back to the general lack of "life" in the squad. "Who cares?" seems like an appropriate, non-rhetorical question. And the answer seems to be that no one in the dugout is particularly bothered about bad play. And neither is this fan, because I am paying no more attention to the Twins than are the abundant empty seats at Target Field.
  2. I read this as "the Tarpa Tampons." Perhaps new glasses are in order...
  3. I have only watched a few innings this year. I often follow on Gameday when I'm doing something else because I've loved the Twins since Pedro Ramos pitched the opener, but for me unwatchable is exactly the correct adjective.
  4. You're missing the obvious selection for hitter who is the most "clutch." Let's face it; the only answer is "none of the above."
  5. I'm totally in agreement, and this is my worry. You can change stances and swings and pitching motions, but baseball coaches really can't change players' personalities. I fear that the Twins have recruited and signed a bunch of "good on paper" and "good secondary numbers" players, but players with no heart. Anybody else missing a little bit of Arraez or Punto these days?
  6. They'll be there to pick up their obscene paychecks. I haven't been paying close attention to games, but when I've been actively watching, there seems to be absolutely zero energy or enthusiasm in any player. It looks like they are "mailing it in" and playing out the string like it's end-of-season, out-on-contention garbage time instead of the first week, when you set the tone for the season. Maybe it's time for some phantom injuries and callups for the prospects. Honestly, they can't do worse than what we are seeing and should add some energy.
  7. Please! Number 4 tried to pick up the ball to hold him at first, and whiffed, letting the ball trickle into the outfield. Single and an error on our inexpensive, nervous, rookie shortstop. At least he's knocking the cover off the ball at the plate. Oh ... wait ...
  8. As suggested above, roster construction has a lot to do with the problem. They have drafted so many 1B-OF sluggers that it really limits the stock of available guys with a more varied approach. I'm not sure that they have the players who can succeed at anything except homerun derby.
  9. Unlike, say, the Lakers? There are about as many players on the court as lakes in southern California...
  10. What about clutch hitters? It seems like they were about as bad as the pitchers in recent years: leaving the bases loaded with no outs, not knocking in runners in scoring position far too many times. Does the manager bear any responsibility for getting players to perform at their best when the game is on the line? It seems like some players and managers are "scrappy," coming up with whatever is needed at any given moment and stealing wins. Spreadsheets are not good at this.
  11. Sadly, the Twins would not take Clemente. Not "their kind of player." No homeruns, no strikeouts, defense-shmefence.
  12. Finding "Joey Gallo" and "adroit" in a sentence that wasn't talking about ability to strike out was jolting.
  13. I agree. Modern baseball demands that the players give 110% all the time or they will get beaten by other players giving 110%. But our bodies were only intended to go 100%. It's like running a machine at higher speed or power than its "rated capacity." Sooner or later, the machine breaks down. Our players are breaking down. Have any teams devised a training plan that keeps players within their "rated capacity" most of the time, yet still allows them to overachieve on those few occasions when it is particularly needed?
  14. This makes me really, really sad.
  15. Typo I presume? That would make him -3 when he pitched in the World Series...
  16. One could reasonably interpret this as saying that what you call "optimized contact" is not a very useful measure.
  17. The Twins seem to do best on off days. There will soon be many more of them to enjoy.
  18. I'd add: ... and move runners over and get hits with runners in scoring position. And perhaps even play defense!
  19. I can't see it. With the existing pitching staff, the Twins will be lucky to make the postseason and I don't see any way that they get to three games if they do. I know everyone will hate this comment, but we are just not very good right now, especially against winning opponents.
