  1. For all who insist that RF defensive is more important than 1B defense, here is something to ponder. In 2018, major league right fielders averaged 2.04 chances per nine innings and 1.95 outs. Also in 2018, major league first basemen averaged 8.65 chances per nine innings and 8.00 outs. Four times the chances and four times the outs. Please don't underestimate the importance of a good first baseman.
  2. My opinion is that Machado would never agree to move to Minnesota no matter how much money is offered. But if the Twins were to make an offer to Machado that exceeded all others by such a wide margin that Machado becomes a Twin, then what? They would still have holes at 3B/1B, OF, C, and both relief pitching and starters and no money left to fill them. But they would have a fancy new toy at shortstop. The Twins need to fill lots of holes, not one. Forget Machado.
  3. A question based on my ignorance of all the rules in baseball..... Wouldn't only Santana need a 40-man spot? Does a trade for a minor leaguer mean you have to promote him to the 40-man roster?
  4. In an article at philliesnation.com, the author postulates that the Twins are the best match for them in a Carlos Santana trade. He is suggesting offering the Twins Santana (and paying half his salary the next two years) along with a high prospect (the names Ranger Suarez and Enyel De Los Santos, #8 and #9 on the prospect list, were mentioned) for a lower level prospect. It sounds like the Phillies really want to unload the contract. So a possible trade would be: Santana and either Suarez or De Los Santos plus $15M cash to the Twins for one of the following: Akil Baddoo, Gilberto Celestine, Lamonte Wade or Jorge Alcala. I think I would take that.
  5. I like the hire for one specific reason. If I'm a young MLB pitcher, I would rather have a pitching coach who can back up the modifications he suggests to me with sound reasoning rather than the usual "because I said so" mentality that appears to be the norm. I did not know that over 240 muscles are involved when throwing a baseball but that sort of expertise would make it easier to accept changes. And his track record seems to back up his approach. Let's hope it works out.
  6. Nonsense. Offering lifetime financial security to a player that has only had two good months in the majors (along with a heart-to-heart discussion about the reasoning behind not calling him up last fall) could easily bring trust back into Buxton's world.
  7. I guess Herb Score was sending a message to the Cleveland Indians when hit was hit in the face by a line drive? Rookie of the Year in 1955 and only wins 17 games in the rest of his career after being hit in 1956.
  8. In DocBauer's first paragraph, he says "Latin doesn't matter" and I agree 100%. No one speaks Latin anyway. Even in ancient Rome, the citizens spoke Greek and only used Latin for writing. Enough talk about Latin. Now Spanish I could see.
  9. I would like a manager that sends me free box seat tickets whenever I want them.
  10. Precluded means prevented. I think you mean Bray proceded Lujan and Smeltzer.
  11. As a fan of Harmon Killebrew when I was younger, I am a fan of long homeruns. The two upper deck shots at Metropolitan Stadium on consecutive days (522 feet and 469 feet) were things of beauty.
  12. Do you folks have more infrmation than what was posted by Seth? His report was that a vehicle Sano was in came in contact with a police officer. Everyone seems to assume he was the driver. Anyone know definitively? There may have been gun shots? Nothing concrete in that statement either, but it seems to be an accepted fact in some comments. Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, could it be possible that Sano was riding with a friend and a policeman was hit? Is it possible the friend's car backfired when it stopped sounding like a gunshot? Maybe Mr. Sano offered to pay medical expenses to help out his friend and to be a good citizen? A lot of conclusions drawn from a vague report.
  13. Bryce Harper like Cold Springs beer? Who would have thought that?
  14. I can sympathize with Willians. Fifty years ago, a team mate of mine in college said to me: "Terry, you were blessed with the skills of a professional athlete, but cursed with the body of a professional baker." My spare tire has never left me despite the efforts of Nutri Systems, Weight Watchers, and other outside agents.
  15. It still amuses (and irritates) me that so many commentators simplistically say "just go out and sign an Ace." Free agency is a two-sided negotiation, not a trip to Walmart to pik up somthing you need. If I were an Ace, I would look very closely at the mediocre outfield defense (especially without Buxton) and the potentially terrible infield defense (especially if Mauer retires) of the 2019 Twins, and decide the money isn't worth the severe damage to my career statistically. If a possible contender with a solid defense offered me a package similar to a Twins' offer, but a couple million a year less ($12 instead of $15), I would take it. At that level of financial security (and including the tax implications), the chance at a world series title would take me elsewhere. So what can be done to change this? Try to sign the best defensive shortstop you can and move Polanco to 2B. Try to get a decision from Mauer as quickly as possible so you can figure out the 1B, 3B, and DH situation and hopefully factor defense into the decision. Now you can at least approach the top tier free agent pitchers and show them that they will have a great infield defense behind. Oh yeah, and lie through your teeth that a cure for Buxton's hitting problems has been discovered by the Mayo Clinic and he will be back in center field for 160 games for the next ten years. Then maybe I'll sign with the Twins.
  16. Would it be possible to get an end of season summary report on each of the prospects that the Twins received in the trade deadline transactions? I'm old and can't remember who they are.
  17. Interesting line on Tyler Palm: "five scoreless innings ceding just one run." I had to go to the box score to see how that worked. He ceded just one hit. Great night for him.
  18. Calm down, Thrylos. This article only says that Mauer has "admirably carved out a place in franchise lore." No mention here of Hall of Fame.
  19. Remember in 2016 when the Twins brought up a kid who finished the season with an ERA of 8.02, a WHIP of 1.87, and opponents hit .310 against him? They should have admitted their mistake and dumped him too. Instead they kept using him and all he did was pitch in the All Star game this year. Give the kid a chance.
  20. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't a MLB contract require both sides to be in agreement? I believe that I read that Dozier wanted to test the free agency market because he felt he would get a bigger contract. If Dozier didn't want to sign, then there wasn't anything they could do about it. And the way 2018 went for Dozier, I'm happy the Twins were able to get something back from the Dodgers.
  21. There have been several comments urging the front office to add players through free agency. So I went to Spotrak.com and found the 2019 list of free agents as of today. I sorted the position players by OPS and the pitchers by Wins/Saves. Here are the top players by position (age is in parentheses). For position players, I've listed those near or above .800 (plus Mauer). For starting pitchers, I chose 6 wins or more and for relief pitchers, I chose 10 saves or more. POSITION PLAYERS 1B Matt Adams (30) .889 1B Joe Mauer (36) .726 2B Daniel Descalso (32) .849 2B Jed Lowrie (35) .820 2B Asdrubal Cabrera (35) .790 3B Mark Reynolds (35) .909 3B Eduardo Escobar (30) .847 SS Manny Machado (26) .935 LF Steven Pearce (36) .992 LF Michael Brantley (32) .805 CF AJ Pollack (31) .916 CF Bryce Harper (26) .869 RF Nick Markakis (35) .867 RF Lonnie Chisenhall (30).846 RF Carlos Gonzalez (33) .845 C Yasmani Grandal (30) .862 C Wilson Ramos (31) .834 DH Nelson Cruz (38) .903 DH Evan Gattis (32) .808 STARTING PITCHERS SP Charlie Morton (35) 12 SP JA Happ(36) 11 SP Dallas Keuchel (31) 9 SP Patrick Corbin (30) 8 SP Lance Lynn (32) 7 SP CC Sabathia (38) 6 SP Anibal Sanchez (35) 6 SP Yoyani Gallardo (33) 6 SP Tyson Ross (32) 6 SP Gio Gonzalez (33) 6 SP Brandon McCarthy (35) 6 RELIEF PITCHERS RP Craig Kimbral (31) 33 RP Cody Allen (30) 21 RP Bud Norris (34) 20 RP Jeurys Familia (29) 17 RP Sergio Romo (36) 13 RP Brad Brach (33) 11 RP Brad Ziegler (39) 10 This is not a very impressive list from which to choose from. My bet is that the Dodgers lock up Machado before he hits the open market. That leaves Harper as the only real "game changer" and from what I've read about his attitude, I'm not sure I want the Twins going after him. ***I had this in a nice table format before I hit Post. I don't know what happened. *** And now it looks nice. Go Figure.
  22. Here are the totals for the 14 pitchers listed above. IP: 338.7 ERA: 1.86 WHIP: 1.01 K/9: 8.00 Those are some pretty impressive numbers. And no Brustar Graterol or Fernando Romero.
  23. Thoughts from the North Woods of Maine.... DFA five guys right now: Belisle, Rodney, Wilson, Morrison, and Grossman. Replace them with Nick Anderson, Alan Busenitz, Willians Astudillo, Zander Weil, and LaMonte Wade. Plug them in and see what they can do during August. Promote Trevor May and Matt Magill to be the co-Closers. At the September roster expansion add Tyler Duffy, Jake Reed, Fernando Romero, Stephen Gonsalves, John Curtiss, Aaron Slegers, Kohl Stewart, and Zack Littell to the pitching staff (and use them) and add Gregorio Petit, Nick Gordon, Mitchell Kranson, Brent Rooker and Luis Arraez to the bench and use them as much as possible. Let's see what the farm system really has.
