  1. But how much? No one knows because the books are kept secret. And they may "have" it, but they have announced that the budget will be lower. So they don't "have" it to spend.
  2. They may not "need" cheap, but with the TV revenue uncertainty, it's what they may be stuck with.
  3. I'm suspicious of any trade that is based on thinking that he had one good season two years ago and pitched for a team that doesn't use analytics nearly as well as the Twins do, so therefore he will be the next Pablo Lopez. Ah well, it is the off season.
  4. Near the very beginning of the article, it says that injuries may change the ETA for any prospect. This is just one person's best guess at when these prospects might arrive.
  5. I've been reading your comments for several years and I've come to the opinion that you don't understand the purpose of the comment section. Your replies lack (mostly 😇) misspelled words, bad grammar, rambling and incoherent sentences, and the requisite bashing of the author. All you do is offer your opinions in a logical, well thought out manner. You better be careful or you might be blocked from contributing.
  6. C - Jeffers 1B - Julien 2B - Lewis SS - Correa 3B - Lee LF - Kirilloff CF - Martin RF - Wallner DH - Buxton Fun to watch and takes care of budget problems.
  7. I would like to add one caveat to this discussion. The comparison is not just how the $10M salaries match up against the free agent pool. It also needs to include what assets the trade partners are willing to part with. For example, is it better to sign Teoscar Hernandez for $10M or trade for Kepler and his $10M but also give up a starting pitcher or a couple of prized prospects? I still think both Kepler and Polanco should be traded, but the decision on the other side is more complicated than just salaries.
  8. That fixed income is definitely a bitch. I did the caretaker thing this year but I probably won't renew. My property taxes just took a big leap upwards and the money is better spent elsewhere. A lot of the caretaker-only articles were heavily data centered which I don't understand or find interesting. I'm about ten years your senior and I really like your idea of a senior discount.
  9. I have no idea what "run into a cookie" means (although it sounds delicious). However, I would love to see a guy who hits a lot of home runs even if he strikes out 1/3 of his at bats, if he also hits .270 from both sides of the plate. Here is my mathematical reasoning..... ABs 500 SOs 175 (35%) HRs 35 Remaining ABs 290 Hits needed to hit .270 100 BA on Remaining ABs .344 In order to hit .270 in 500 plate appearances, Severino would need 135 total hits - 35 of which would be home runs. Therefore, in his remaining non-strikeout, non-home run 290 at bats, Severino would need a .344 batting average. In contrast, with the same strike out and home run numbers, a Gallo-esque type hitter would only need to hit .224 in order to achieve a .200 batting average. I would much prefer Severino.
  10. You advocate adding any of three guys, all of whom probably would hit under .240. And then dismiss Martin saying that he "still has elements to iron out". What are these elements? And can they not be worked on in the majors? Bring the guy up and use any available money to go after Yamamoto. The Twins need a good arm.
  11. Ancient history.
  12. I'm a retired civil servant. I have no vault. But the Pohlads certainly have one. They bought the Twins for $44M and the team is currently estimated to be worth $1.4B. I think they can afford to dig deep and go for a title.
  13. I would also think that signing Yamamoto would have a similar impact to revenue but on a smaller scale. But Yamamoto also can probably be signed for less than half of what Otani will get. It's a good time to open the doors to the vault and bring home a World Series title.
  14. This is also not a typical business. It is professional sports where teams are owned by billionaires (except the Packers), the land of monopoly money, and the driving forces are greedy and ego. The Twins' payroll should be driven by what it takes to win the World Series. There will be a TV contract before the season starts (or shortly thereafter) and using TV as an excuse to not improve the team is disingenuous.
  15. After reading this several times, I still can't figure out what you meant to say about "just maintaining the talent level instead of improving it." At first, I thought you meant that signing Lee wouldn't improve the Twins and I was going to ask if adding Lee in place of Gallo would only maintain the current talent level? But several readings later I wondered if your comment was in reference to the budget cutting. If it's the latter, then I agree. If it's the former, I would say that Lee might be a significant upgrade over Gallo.
  16. And Martin will always remain "unproven" unless he gets a chance to play.
  17. Skip all three. Trade for a good starter. Move Varland to the pen. Avoid all three of these guys.
  18. You have Yamamoto on the "too hot" list at a $20M AAV during his 25 to 35 year old seasons. And you have Rodriguez on the "just right" list at a $20M AAV during his 31 to 36 year old seasons. Personally, if Maki thinks Yamamoto is the real deal, they should try to grab him. As I pointed out in another article, the Twins have $42M of salaries coming off the books because of free agents and another $20.5M available by trading Polanco and Kepler (and $10M more if they could find any team that would take Vasquez). That gives the Twins plenty of room to land Yamamoto.
  19. Other than Rosario and maybe Cosetti, I don't think any of these "prospects" are in the Twins' long-term plans.
  20. At the end of the season, the Twins had 10 free agents (according to Sportac) with salaries totalling about $42M. I plus they have two options players worth $20.5M available for trade (replaceable with Julien and Austin Martin). That leaves the Twins with over $62M of available salary money - assuming the budget stays the same. I think the Twins can afford Yoshinobu Yamamoto (if Maki likes him) and a very good RH outfielder.
