  1. I do not have any evidence to prove that a pitcher is less likely to be injured by pitching in relief rather than starting the game as a starter. However many have posted that the Twins do not want to risk moving Duran to starter from reliever. I wonder if this is true.
  2. The danger is that starting Duran may work until he is injured. Then the Twins have no starter and have lost the best reliever in the game today.
  3. Which of these prospects/players would you give the Mets for catcher, Kevin Parada: 1) Brooks Lee; 2) Luis Arraez; 3) Max Kepler; 4) Jorge Polanco; or 5) Trevor Larnach? Personally I would trade any one of these 5 for Parada. What do you think?
  4. Really well written article about a provocative subject. Thanks Steven.
  5. Interesting point. I may ask my friend, Mark Davidson, about this. He was on the 87 team.
  6. I agree Bly. If I heard Gardy or Rocco say this once, I have heard it a hundred times after losses: "It's a long season". Baloney. It is one day at a time, one game at a time, one inning at a time, one pitch at a time. The games in April count as much as the "September pennant race" games.
  7. Al, Your points are well taken. You are correct according to all of the major prospect rankings. We Twins' fans tend to rank our Twins' prospects higher than any of the major prospect lists and rankings. Why is that? I think it is similar to parents who erroneously think their children are the greatest athletes on any team, because they love their children and are biased. We Twins' fans are also biased in our beliefs about the Twins' prospects.
  8. Wonderful post Doc. Well written. Is your doctorate in literature? Thank you.
  9. What about letting Farmer catch in Spring Training to see how that works out?
  10. Thanks Nick. This was a really "nice" article. And you know what... I believe you are correct. Not everyone wants to raise a family in the hustle and bustle of a big city. I sure don't. I'm a small town guy, who enjoys the slow pace and the friendly smiles and casual talk in a small town. Life does not have to be a rush to the finish. For me, I'm happier with a pleasant stroll.
  11. Who will DH? A mishmash of whoever is healthy or the American League batting champion?
  12. Why is no one on this thread talking about Arraez playing at DH? Somebody has to DH 4 to 5 AB each game. Every game. It would save Arraez's legs, plus he would be available to play 1B when needed. I understand the concept of trading when one's value is high...but if a team uses that theory, then it trades its best performers every year. How foolish that would be! The team that does that will never be a consistent winner. If the player is good (wins a batting championship), is good in the clubhouse, loved by the fans, why trade him? Keep him for what he brings to the team. The grass is not always greener on the other side.
  13. Who do the Twins have, who is not an everyday position player with an already designated position, that would be better at DH against right- handed pitching? Wallner, Larnach, Jeffers, Celestino, Farmer, Gordon? Just play Arraez at DH and occasionally let him play 1B or 2B in a pinch.
  14. The question is, "Did the Twins improve the roster so far, over the winter offseason?" It is the Twins at the end of the 2022 season vs. the Twins now. Have the Twins improved over the winter? At the end of 2022 the Twins did not have a SS. Period. The Twins only had Jeffers at catcher, and no other prospects for catcher. Period. The OF was in shambles due to injuries. Two key pitchers Maeda and Mahle are closer to being healthy. Kirilloff is closer to being healthy. Lewis and Paddock are closer to being healthy. Martin had a good fall season. And Buck is back. Hell yes the Twins are better now than when the 2022 season ended.
  15. h2 thank you for working John Steinbeck's writing into your response. That was awesome.
  16. Really good article backed up with detailed and understandable graphics. Thank you.
  17. Why do you believe this? I assume you were sarcastic in your answer.
  18. Joe, I too am a trial attorney. I just celebrated 50 years of practicing law in North Carolina. It is a privilege to help people with some of life's most difficult problems.
  19. I think robo umps will make the hitters better. Hear me out. If batters learn the strike zone by repetition, and I contend they do, then it stands to reason that the more consistently accurate the ball/strike calls are, then the more likely this accurate strike zone will be imprinted on the batters' brains, thus making it more likely that the batters will be able to discern which pitch will be called a ball and which will be a called strike. A batter will not have to adjust his brain to allow for an ump who calls strikes on high pitches out of the strike zone. The batter can use the same consistent information, which, by repetition, is imprinted on his brain, and not have to daily make adjustments for different umps, who shift daily from calling balls and strikes to umping at first base or third base, and a new ump is behind the plate. The umps are human and call balls and strikes differently behind the plate, say 10 per cent of the time. (A Boston University study in 2018 showed the most accurate umps still were wrong on called pitches 7.5% of the time and the worst umps were wrong over 11% of the time. The better umps tended to be younger. The older, less accurate umps, were the ones selected for playoff and world series games.) I have often compared inconsistent judges in court to baseball umpires and have used an analogy about inconsistent judges, comparing them to inconsistent umpires. "Call them high or call them low, just be consistent."
  20. Zoilo and Greg were really good fielders, and I am so glad they played for the Twins, but neither had an arm like Carlos, nor did either have Carlos' power hitting.
  21. I still have the Christmas card which Zoilo sent me when I was a boy. I had written him during the baseball season and asked for an autographed picture, which he had sent. I was thrilled several months later to receive this Christmas card. from him. That was a nice thing for him to do.
  22. Correa is already the best SS ever to play for the Twins in my book. Whether he will be the biggest SS contributor to the Twins, will depend on the length of time he plays and his future performance.
  23. I don't think it would be a wise move for the Twins to trade Sonny Gray this winter. That would send a terrible message to the rest of the team.
