  1. Vazquez will make the pitching better. It might be the cheapest way to improve the rotation and the bullpen.
  2. Everyone is printing money. Only a few teams are actually spending it to make the team better.
  3. Cleveland gets better. The Twins are falling behind at the moment.
  4. I wouldn't be livid if they traded Arraez for Corbin Burnes, Julio Urias or Pablo Lopez. In fact, I'd be livid if they had a chance and didn't.
  5. Boras is going to get Correa more than Turner got. That's his whole motivation.
  6. Considering how much "proven" relievers are getting, I'd be looking for failed (or old, injured, etc) starters to add in bulk. Mike Minor, Wade Miley, Rich Hill, Ryan Yarbrough, Aaron Sanchez, etc. Any of them could be the next Jorge Lopez. Here's another example: Chad Kuhl. He has been a 5th starter for several seasons and isn't getting any younger. His fastball is well below average in the rotation but could play up in the bullpen if he adds a couple MPH. His slider is decent and he gets a lot of spin on his curveball (though his curve does get hit hard when it is poorly located). Get him to stop throwing his awful sinker (which he threw 44% of the time) and his changeup (which gets hit like crazy) and focus on what he does best.
  7. Looks like the going rate for 1 WAR has increased to $10M, at least for the large market teams.
  8. Is Toronto going to send back one of their 3 catchers? If not, then he stays put. I'd only trade him for a different major leaguer this offseason, not for prospects.
  9. You have to have some serious problems with loss aversion to feel "stung" by losing Akil Baddoo.
  10. People love drafts. RE: Tyler Wells, the Twins decided to grab Ian Gibaut off waivers and keep him on the roster instead. That looks like a bad decision in hindsight.
  11. Byron Buxton also likes trucks. They'll probably get along.
  12. Agreed, but there is also going to be a lot of noise in SB numbers. The pitcher matters, the runner matters, catchers only get about half the games for a team. With Jeffers you're talking about 38 stolen base attempts in 2022. Nobody would expect OBP to tell the whole story after 38 at-bats. With that small amount of data you're probably better off with a stopwatch measuring pop time and estimating. Even for his career it's 103 stolen base attempts. You can get some information about batting after 103 at-bats. Then we have the unknown of how Jeffers would do if he stopped setting up with a leg out and set up in a crouch instead to stop the running game when there is a fast baserunner.
  13. Then they'll probably tell Jeffers to set up in a crouch.
  14. A strong defensive catcher who hits .250 is a borderline All-Star. The league hit .243 last season.
  15. Drew Millas is probably the best Rule 5 option behind the plate. If they want him they should trade for him and option him to AAA. I don't think he's ready for the big leagues.
  16. He's coached to frame the ball low as much as possible, including receiving the ball with a leg out instead of in a crouch. That decision affects his ability to block and his pop time to second base. I think Jeffers could adjust and improve in these areas if the team wanted him to do so. They'd rather have him framing low pitches for strikes. I keep going back to Jeffers' actual stats for base stealing. He was 3 bases below league average. Not runs, but bases allowed. If he's "terrible" then the average MLB catcher is also "terrible". With base stealing at a 50 year low I doubt the catchers are that bad at throwing out baserunners. It's far more likely that teams only attempt to steal with elite baserunners. I would love to see the team sign Vazquez. I enjoyed watching him play during the postseason (which also showcased the elite skills of Realmuto). I agree the team needs to add AAA depth as well.
  17. My question is whether he had good mechanics that deteriorated or he's always had bad mechanics and it's just catching up to him now.
  18. They also have the option of giving him a qualifying offer after he is done with arbitration. Most #2/#3 starters are worth a 1 year qualifying offer.
  19. It's a better idea than locking up Randy Dobnak. I think they can wait a year before making this move. He's under control for the peak of his career so the reason to do this is to keep arbitration costs down.
  20. Reducing demand does not usually increase the price
  21. The catchers market usually moves first but I think Sean Murphy may have to get traded before there is any real movement.
  22. Unfortunately his performance didn't improve in the bullpen last season. Too many walks, not enough command of the strike zone.
  23. He's already controlled for 3 more years through arbitration. The reason to do an extension is to buy out a free agent year or two. That would mean a 4 or 5 year contract and/or some sort of team options.
  24. I was trying to figure out a comp for Arraez. There are so few players like Arraez but John Kruk feels like a good comparable. Kruk had high batting averages, modest power, bad knees and was a short first baseman. He managed to play to age 34. I don't see a lot of risk locking up Arraez until age 30.
