  1. On paper, no. But from what I remember Lawton was well liked and nobody liked Rick Reed.
  2. Nettles for Tiant is the worst one on my list, but that's mainly the release of Tiant that makes it so bad.
  3. Donovan Solano told a reporter he wants to come back to the Twins. That could help ease the loss of Polanco.
  4. If Amazon has control over several teams they can change the whole model 1) Sell local ads to people who live locally, no matter which game they're watching. If someone in Idaho is watching Yankees vs Dodgers you can serve them an advertisement for a car dealership in Boise. 2) Sell ads to national advertisers who would like to get their ads in front of anyone watching baseball. Tell Gillette you'll put razor advertising on every baseball game. 3) Amazon could advertise the billions of products they have for sale on their website. Owning eyeballs helps them sell Fire tablets, Amazon Basics products and groceries at Whole Foods. Instead of buying ads on a sports network they're just buying a sports network to advertise on.
  5. Twins Fest is on January 26th. They usually want something to talk about during that weekend. An extension for Lewis, Duran or Jeffers would count as "big news" right now.
  6. I'm not sure he can even catch 40 games a year now. As a RH platoon 1B/DH he's not a great fit for the roster.
  7. Apple can get advertisers for a game between a random 3rd and 5th place team. Prime has 5 times as many subscribers as Apple. Even with all of the access issues MLB games are routinely the highest rated programming throughout the summer. If access is improved I would expect those numbers to increase quite a bit, perhaps as much as 3x in some markets. Ad rates for sports are the highest because people actually watch them in real time. The subscription fees will go down but that business model is on it's death bed (along with many cable subscribers). Advertisers still want to pay a lot of money for ads during MLB games. People want to watch the Twins. The best option for watching a Twins game - MLB.tv - was only available to people who don't live anywhere near Minnesota (unless they broke the law). I heard Bally's is only available in 15% of households in the viewing area. That's pathetic. Make the games easy to access and people will come.
  8. I have heard lots of positives about the MLB.tv app. They already have a path forward for streaming - use MLB.tv. For cable - use the MLB channel plus a couple of alternates.
  9. My preference would be to have all games over the air on one of the alternate broadcast channels (45, 9+, etc). Next best would be a combination of cable and streaming that ends blackouts and makes sure all cable/satellite providers get the games. Bally's still has issues with availability. It's not on Dish Network or Comcast, for example. What is the point of having a "broadcast partner" who can't get the games into people's homes?
  10. Because you are guaranteed to get him if you pay him $6M but he can sign anywhere if he makes it through waivers.
  11. If a player is claimed the claiming team takes the whole contract. If they pass through waivers then the team waiving is responsible for all but the minimum. Farmer would not get past all 30 teams without being claimed.
  12. Yes, but I was stating that the Twins could be rid of his contract immediately if they put him on waivers. Therefore, it can't be a mistake to tender a contract.
  13. Cleveland only has a $90M payroll. That should be easy to sustain with the pooled revenue from MLB.
  14. Five years $50M and a $25M option for 2029 would still be a great deal for the Twins and much more likely not to get rejected immediately.
  15. I agree that the proposed extension looks really low. You bring up Michael Harris - he got $70M. Chourio got $80M with no track record. Why would Lewis settle for $40M? Lewis was the most valuable position player on the team on a per-inning basis last year. Then he was a stud in the postseason. He hasn't even hit his prime years yet. He's not signing a Jorge Polanco extension. Further, if I'm Royce Lewis and I see how the Twins are pulling back on spending when they have a team that went .500 in the playoffs the previous year there is no way in hell I sign any contract that gives away my chance to play for a team that is actually trying to win.
  16. Royce Lewis got a $6.7M draft bonus. He's doing fine. Even though the free agent market is not happening for the Twins I thought we would hear some news about a TV contract or extensions for young players (Lewis, Duran, Jeffers) by now. The only news in the last week was that they let Rob Antony go.
  17. The Lourdes Gurriel contract (3 years $42M) is another read on Max Kepler's market value. If he's worth $14M a season and getting paid $10M he doesn't have a whole lot of excess trade value. It is also another data point that Kepler is unlikely to get a $22M qualifying offer next winter.
  18. They would consider Snell because he just won a Cy Young Award and he wants to give the Mariners a discount to go back home to Washington.
  19. The Mariners gave up quite a bit to get Castillo. I don't think they want to move him. I am pretty sure the Twins could get Robbie Ray from the Mariners if they wanted him. That's a better target. The Mariners have been packaging talent with their high priced players just to free up room in their budget. With the salaries starting pitchers are getting I could see Ray opting out after 2024. FYI - The Mariners just recently announced they now own 100% of their regional sports network Root Sports.
  20. The Twins definitely had superior strategy in the Toronto series. Baldelli clearly out-managed Schneider. Houston figured out how to get to Sonny Gray and that was enough to beat the Twins.
  21. I am guessing Raya ends up in the bullpen as well as Varland. If they have too many good pitchers they can trade Ober and Ryan as they reach the end of arbitration to open up spots. Imagine the ransom the Twins could demand if they were the team with the proven, cheap pitching this offseason.
