  1. They don't. That $50M was 50% shared with the rest of MLB anyway so at most they're down $25M and that's if the new number is $0.
  2. You left out the ad money. Subscriber money should be the smaller piece of the pie.
  3. They just brought back Henriquez and Moran on minor league deals.
  4. I will believe it when I see it. Apple just paid $85M a year for 2 games a week. ESPN is paying $550M per season. I'm supposed to believe that the Twins TV rights are worthless the very next season.
  5. He's more of a groundball pitcher and the Twins tend to prefer flyball guys in the rotation.
  6. I'd give him 100 plate appearances before I believe that is true.
  7. I think making it easier to access games on TV will drive increased attendance. The best advertisement for attending a Twins game in person is watching one on television.
  8. MLB.tv was $150 a year for out of market games. If they made it $162 a year ($1 per game) and you get in-market games I think they'll do very well. They should be able to sell the same package as an adder to cable or satellite for people who don't stream their TV. Bundle it with 4 upper deck tickets for $200 a year.
  9. The Provus news is fine. The Atteberry news is disappointing. When I listen to the radio I get the feeling Dan and Kris hate each other.
  10. George Kirby Brandon Pfaadt Kyle Bradish Hunter Greene Eury Perez Grayson Rodriguez Paul Skenes Mick Abel Reid Detmers Spencer Strider Tanner Bibee Bobby Miller It's the list of pitchers nobody is going to trade.
  11. The Twins have not disclosed any facts so all we have is speculation based on them lowering payroll because they can't make money off television.
  12. Live sports command the highest advertising rates of all television programming. If the Twins are the only pro sports team who can't make money over television that is a serious problem with management. If they're putting money into a new long-term distribution model that will pay off later I would prefer that they didn't take all of the startup cost out of this season's budget.
  13. Until the window for contention is over. Then they can dump all the expensive guys, play rookies and watch the money flow in again. Goddamn it, I want to see the Twins take a shot at winning when they have an opportunity - like the freaking Brewers do. I don't want to see them put their profits ahead of wins at every opportunity. Otherwise I think I could care more about my bank account balance than whether the Twins win, too.
  14. The Twins are coming off one of the worst TV contracts in MLB so that shouldn't be a surprise to the team.
  15. Fans shouldn't be rooting for the Pohlads to exceed their earnings projections. They should be rooting for wins. Nobody wears a Dave St. Peter jersey to a game.
  16. If they actually lose all of their TV revenue someone needs to be fired. That's gross incompetence for a professional sports franchise.
  17. Well, duh. Payroll isn't the only thing that correlates with success. I've said that repeatedly. It is undeniable that payroll is important. I don't think the Diamondbacks are as much of an outlier as you think they are. They only won 84 games in the regular season and they spent $120M.
  18. Ideally they add someone to the top of the rotation that bumps Varland to the #6 spot in AAA and a young pitcher for the minor leagues they can use as the #7/8 option. Worst case they add a veteran lefty who can move to the bullpen if they get beat out of a spot in the rotation.
  19. Unfortunately, if true, it also means they're willing to risk a 2024 pennant for a better TV contract.
  20. Another idea - this is the opening of negotiations for the TV contract. If they spend the estimated money in advance then the media company has leverage knowing the Twins need the money to make payroll. This incentivizes the TV company to wait until the day before the first payroll check is due and force the Twins to settle. The Twins are saying "we can play this whole season without a TV contract at all and we aren't going to cave in."
  21. The Twins have to be careful if they want to make sure they're a revenue sharing recipient. Being a recipient means they get extra draft picks and an increased budget for international free agent signings. They don't want to lose that advantage.
  22. Another debate trick - the strawman argument. It's the best way to tell if something directly correlates with something else.
  23. I agree, if that's the strategy you need a big scrap heap. Fortunately there are at least 8 roster spots for relievers in AAA. I would fill AAA with retreads every year and keep my young guys in AA until I sorted through the scrap heap a little.
  24. Well yeah. The Brewers already have an all-star behind the plate. They're not looking for another catcher.
