This is an important point. I believe the number is 6-8% of players that enter pro baseball make the majors. Obviously Jenkins has a better chance than most but for most prospects the likely outcome is they never make it. I confess to snarkiness when posting about prospects. Posters list off 8 guys in AA and wonder what are going to do with all this talent? We have a logjam! Reality is one of those 8 will make it maybe two if we are lucky. I do think age is overrated when it comes to prospects. I believe it was Larry Hisle that didn’t make the bigs until he was 28 and led the AL in RBIs or maybe it was Gary Ward. If they are improving keep running them out there until they aren’t regardless of age. Meanwhile I will keep patiently waiting for the next logjam 😀

Are we talking enough about Luke Keaschall?

Does anybody have any detailed info on his fielding? I know he is moving around a lot which makes me wonder how good he is with the glove. -
Four Takeaways From the Minnesota Twins' First Half
Linus replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I’m really enjoying this version of the Twins. The lineup is more consistent scoring runs on a game by game basis and they are more fun to watch with less of the three true outcome approach. Bullpen has been a little iffy but can’t fault the FO as they brought in plenty of guys they just lost several to injury. I think the pen will set up nicely for the playoffs however. I am still really concerned about starting pitching depth. If one of the top three go down we are in trouble. My other concern is just cleaning up some of the basics where they seem to make too many mistakes. Bright spot in this regard was Brooks Lees comment on why he left a slow roller to Correa: “ there was a chance the runner on second would take third if I cut across and took the ball so I left it for Carlos”. That kind of thinking is music to my ears.- 73 replies

The Twins Should Trade Alex Kirilloff to the Angels
Linus replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Kiriloff is getting to the number of plate appearances where you can see what you have He’s an average hitter who is mediocre at first and poor in the outfield. I doubt any team will give up much to acquire him so the best plan may be to use the last option and see if he breaks out sometime between now and spring training next year. He’s another guy playing an offense first position but isn’t really doing much with the bat. -
Yea well that wasn’t even close to the point I made.

If you are referring to my post I was saying to slow the roll on fans expectations. The Twins should move him as fast as is warranted by his play.

I’ll say this again - people need to slow the roll with all prospects. He’s 19 and in low A. There is a whole lotta baseball to be played before he is even close to the bigs. And of course he may not turn out to be the star everyone is counting on. Expectations get so high for some of these guys that it’s almost impossible for them to meet them. I think this is why some people get so down on Buck. Rarely do prospects hit their best possible outcome.

Who do you prefer as the Twins Color Commentator
Linus replied to stringer bell's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I know this is supposed to be about the color guys but I want to compliment Provus. He is hands down the best announcer in our market. To me he is a modern day Herb Carneal - a true pro who you can enjoy all summer and never get tired of him. I can listen to Kris Attebery and Tim Laudner for three minutes and I have to turn it off.- 22 replies

I think your points are spot on. I am really enjoying this team especially the lineup. My only regret is that we swung and missed last offseason. Add one more good starter to this rotation and we could go places.

Perk and Morneau for me. Really the only two I don’t want are Span and Plouffe. Denard adds nothing (nice guy) and Plouffe makes each broadcast seem like a frat party.- 22 replies

Me too which makes it an odd situation. I’m guessing other people are making it felt at some level. They made it far too easy for the casual fan to disengage. I have several family members who used to go to 2-3 games a year but have stopped completely because they can’t watch them on TV. Meanwhile this team has a bunch of good guys and is fun to watch (if you can).

That aspect of his play is more disappointing than his hitting. He’s not good in the field and at times has downright bad.

Astros (Dublin) v Twins (López); 7/5/24 @ 7:10pm CT

Great tag by Willi. -
With the new playoff format I don’t view the trade deadline as the best way to fill holes. Supply is less and demand is greater. IMO it makes last off season an even bigger bungle as we had opportunities but just screwed it up.

As I posted after his first start he was going to have better command or he was going to get knocked around. This is particularly true on the fastball which has no movement to speak of. If that isn’t spotted with good command he is in trouble. Pretty similar story with the change as well. Obviously not giving up on him but as he stands right now - not a mlb caliber starter. Not saying it can’t happen but many people just assume success in the bigs because they had some success in the minors and it ain’t so. I truly hope I’m wrong but when I look at Festas path i see Balazovic. Decent stuff with shaky command leading to erratic results.

I think we are in agreement but don’t know it. What I am saying is that hitters need to be in a non - strikeout frame of mind all the time in order to be good at it. Yes years ago players had a “two strike” approach but they generally tried to prevent strikeouts all the time. It was considered an embarrassment to strike out before the three true outcome approach.

I think the whole strikeout thing is more nuanced. I get it - it’s ugly to watch people flail away but often times it doesn’t matter if you k or fly out or hit a dribbler. There are times that it does. Obvious situation being man on third with less than two outs or man on second and nobody out. Take last night when Buck scored on the contact play. Jeffers had weak contact and beat the ball into the dirt. Everything you don’t want as a hitter yet it scored Buxton. The nuanced part comes here: I don’t think in today’s game you can have two different approaches as a hitter - it’s too difficult. If approach is the three true outcomes but then you have an at bat where you can’t strike out I just don’t think it can be done. Your mindset has to be about preventing strikeouts all the time so you are confident you can do it when you really need to put the ball in play. Just my theory.

Well the Tigers catcher noticed immediately so there were some players alert enough to know the rule. Jeffers screwed up - it ain’t the umps fault. -

Ahhh. When Buck scored the ball rolled loose. Jeffers had already crossed first. When he saw the ball loose he made a small move towards second. The Tigers alertly saw it and they tagged out Jeffers.
