  1. So it puts them back to where their were last year. They are 20th out of 30 in payroll right now. Their current payroll relative to the league is the lowest since they were in the Metrodome. I guess the Pohlads just can’t afford to own a team that wants to compete. Perhaps they should sell and pocket the nearly $2 billion increase in the value of the franchise. I’m sure the Pohlads thank you for your concern over their finances.
  2. This. A thousand times this. The Pohlads have proven this time and again with their actions throughout their ownership tenure.
  3. I had no issue with the podcast. There are a lot of people parsing numbers to defend the Pohlads which is mind boggling to me. The Pohlads top priority is getting their money and hopefully winning at the same time. They have demonstrated this consistently throughout their ownership tenure which is their right. I think it is actually refreshing to have prominent voices shedding light on it.
  4. I think going with Martin is viable. I still view him as a valuable prospect so wherever he lands he needs to play a lot
  5. Icing on this urinal cake……that is a great line that sums up the situation nicely. The kids free idea is great - I think baseball has a huge problem on its hands with kids / younger generations not caring about baseball. One other thing that hasn’t been discussed much. Why didn’t the Twins go with MLB TV like the Padres? have a sneaky feeling Bally gave them more money and that’s always going to rule the day with this outfit. So yea we feel bad for the fans but not that bad.
  6. I’m really excited about this bullpen. I never cared for the FO approach towards building bullpens in prior years. This year checks all the boxes with quality and quantity.
  7. Well neither of us know for certain what pitchers were available. The only thing we know was Seattle wasn’t trading their pitching for Polanco. Julien has way more trade value than Polo. Julien plus another good prospect is a whole different equation. Obviously we will never know the answer but conceptually I liked that path better.
  8. I also think Julien should have been the one traded. He has great value right now. Combined with a prospect we could have received a good controllable pitcher. Polo could handle second and be traded in the off season after Lee shows he is ready for the bigs. Club would be stronger all around.
  9. I e watched him pitch. The numbers you cited are pretty similar. Festa will need to obtain the command JB couldnt to be a big league pitcher.
  10. I don’t care about prospect rankings I’ll be happy if either becomes a regular starter in the bigs. One disconcerting thing is Festa seems similar to Balazovic to me. Big guys with live arms that dominated the low minors and started to show some red flags at AA. I certainly hope his outcome is better.
  11. Apparently the bankruptcy court approved all the deals including the Twins. I can’t find much specific info other than it was for slightly less money than last year and the agreement included strict confidentiality clauses which I found interesting. Does anyone have more / better info on this?
  12. It’s not news that the Twins may be taking intangibles into account. It’s been a part of scouting players forever - called “makeup” by scouts. At the end of the day give me talent - Rocco gets paid to take care of the rest.
  13. One of the joys of watching the club last year was Castro. Too many times defensive flexibility means below average at 3 different spots. Willi was competent wherever he played and was really effective on the bases. Really contributed in a bunch of different ways.
  14. You can make a credible case for boom or bust here. I’m always a little concerned with guys who end up sliding down the defensive spectrum. IF (please note the if) he ends up being a first base DH type then the bar to clear for the bat gets pretty high.
  15. That’s not my perception but it would be interesting to see some research on it.
  16. It ain’t sex that’s killing these guys it’s staying up all night looking for it. Casey Stengel
  17. There doesn’t have to be a reason per se or fault assigned. Prospects fail. Frequently. At all levels. Until they are actually performing well in the show it’s always wise to withhold judgement. It’s human nature to get excited about prospects but most of that excitement is usually pre-mature.
  18. Really excited about the potential of having a shut down pen. Rocco will have a half dozen arms he can trust in a close game. I’m curious why the pen seems to be a higher priority this year compared to past years.
  19. You are correct. All these years I’ve never complained about the Pohlads ownership. As you point out they have been quite predictable in the way they operate the team which leads to a form of stability which is good. This off season feels different due to coming off the playoffs, having a chance to really go places with this team and the fact they didn’t plan well for this TV deal. It put a bee in my bonnet. The bee doesn’t care so I am taking the bonnet off and putting on my Twins cap.
  20. The loss of income is in the neighborhood of $15million based o recent reporting. They knew they were getting money from a tv deal eventually. That’s like 3-5% of overall revenue. If they can’t absorb that without slashing payroll they should sell the Twins and run the Montgomery Biscuits. I’m thinking like a fiduciary and you are thinking like a Pohlad apologist.
  21. I understand exactly how businesses work. TheLLC is the Pohlad family. They can do whatever they want. They made their choice which is their right. Why people want to give them cover for it is beyond me. Put all this aside and ponder what a short term decision this is when your team is coming off their first playoff win and generating some positive momentum. I assume you understand this with all your business acumen.
  22. If you think the Pohlads couldnt cash flow $10 -20 million dollars you are crazy. And if we want to throw out occupations as credentials I was the CEO of a large financial conglomerate. The TV money is chump change in their world. They chose not to do it. That’s their choice - doesn’t mean they should be immune from criticism.
  23. It’s a LLC and the only shareholders are the Pohlad family. It’s amazing to me that people want to give the Pohlad family cover for this off season. I’m not speaking directly to you Tony but I’m just dumbfounded by how easily we are accepting the Pohlads handling of this off season. The amount of money required to invest in this team which could be really good is peanuts in the landscape of MLB. Not to mention less than peanuts in terms of the value they have received in the team and their own family fortunes. I also want to note that I have never criticized the Pohlads handling of payroll in prior years. I have not been a Pohlads are cheap guy but this year is a completely different story. They should be embarrassed. Or as Sid used to say they could screw up a two car funeral.
  24. I don’t care what the Royals spend but the Pohlad family should be embarrassed by this off season. They got caught completely unprepared for this TV situation and double down by pinching what equates to nickels and dimes after their first playoff in forever. They had to have known they were going to get some TV money yet they act like it is zero. I personally don’t understand why the fan base isn’t more pissed. I guess everyone has just been conditioned to not expect anything different.
