Players are reporting to Ft Myers and this roster has more question marks than it did at the beginning of the offseason. What a mess.

The more I think about the Donaldson trade, the angrier I get. I am of the opinion this trade has made them worse off and it didn't have have to be made. Beyond that, I won't rehash the many reasons detailed by others above. I do want to comment more on Gary Sanchez. Where does he fit on this roster? He can't catch. He is NOT a DH as some have suggested. I assume the Twins had to take on him and his $8 million as a condition of completing the deal, because I can't think of why the Twins would want him. I would much rather have kept Rordtvedt. Oh...and he and Sonny Gray have a history...https://www.nj.com/yankees/2018/05/gary_sanchez_responds_to_sonny_gray_comments_then.html Lovely...

This is all to clear salary for Kirk Cousins. Seriously, I would rather have Donaldson and Kiner-filefa on the left side than Story and whoever. And Story will probably cost them more. I don't get this.

What Happens if the MLB Season Gets Delayed?
LewFordLives replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
In reference to the graph above.....One of the problems with all this is that there is not one single owner of MLB, but 30 individual owners, each with their own financial situation. Some owners are doing really well, and others maybe not so much, especially in the last couple years with all the COVID restrictions. Keeping everyone happy is going to take a David Copperfield-level magic trick. -

Part 1: Seth's Top 30 Twins Pitching Prospects (26-30)
LewFordLives replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Thanks! These rankings are always fun to read and give some insight into guys at lower levels that many of us fans don't have time to research. I trust Seth's rankings more than the national outlets because I get the impression he does his homework and knows the Twins farm better than any of them.- 13 replies

Twins Future Position Analysis: Shortstop
LewFordLives replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If Lewis was playing mostly CF in the AFL with the full support and encouragement of the Twins, I wonder how much of that had to do with the uncertainty of Buxton's contract situation. In any event, good hitting, good fielding shortstops are freaks. There just aren't many out there. And in the case of Lewis and/or Martin, to be good at any position they're just going to need experience and instruction. If the Twins think they have the physical ability to play shortstop, then they need to keep sending them out there, even if it means poor results in the near term.- 40 replies

Lockout Lookup: Matt Capps
LewFordLives replied to RandBalls Stu's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
July 2, 2011.... gorgeous evening at Target Field. The Twins were leading the Brewers, the cheese heads were silent, the hot dogs were good, and then Matt Capps ruined my summer. Do you ever get that knot of anger deep inside you and you feel like crying? (Vikings fans will know what I'm talking about.) Some trades are bad in retrospect, but this one was a head scratcher from day one. A blue chip catching prospect for.....Matt Capps. Rauch was not "ineffective". He was actually having a pretty good year. Was he Joe Nathan...no, but then neither was Matt Capps. -
Injuries Set Up Twins Pitching Splurge
LewFordLives replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yeah, I don't see any way the Twins are a playoff team in 2022, so signing Rodon to a short term deal would only be to placate the fan base. Not that that's a bad thing, but I don't feel it's essential that they sign him.- 30 replies

At this point, I don't see the Twins-Rodon as a good fit. If no one is willing to offer him a long term deal, he most likely will settle for a one year make-good deal so he can reenter free agency after the next season. From the Twins standpoint, a one year deal is pointless, since they won't be competitive this season. The Twins will want a team option for 2023.

I just don't understand how they can increase pay for younger players AND increase competition. If the small market teams have to pay more and/or lose them to free agency quicker, it just means they are more likely to trade them sooner or not spend as much during free agency. And I think people need to be realistic about what a salary floor can achieve. It may keep a few owners from pocketing revenue sharing, but there are only so many good players. A floor would only increase the market for mediocre players and have little affect on competition. If they really want the younger players to get a bigger piece of the pie, who's gonna give up theirs? The owners? Not happening. The megastars making $300 million? Fat chance.

I think this is exactly what they're doing. I don't believe they have any intention of competing in 2022. And I think there's something to be said for letting the younger guys get in some innings, although I'm not all that impressed with the pipeline. Balazovic and Duran are the top prospects and neither has a ton of minor league innings and both have injury concerns. They need to swing a trade for good, young, controllable pitching, but that won't be cheap. It really bothers me they couldn't do a deal with Berrios. A still youngish pitcher that would still probably be productive when the Twins are competitive again.

Twins Sign RHP Dylan Bundy

Byron Buxton is Here to Stay
LewFordLives replied to Andrew Mahlke's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
As far as the no trade clause is concerned, I am sure he likes playing here, but it probably has more to do with him being able to dictate where he goes if he and the Twins do eventually decide to part ways. In any event, I think this is a good deal for all sides. It gives him a life altering amount of guaranteed money with lucrative incentives, which I am sure the Twins will be more than happy to pay, since it means we'll be getting the player we all know he can be. -
Yeah, the last couple years he's been just plain bad. A .249 OBP for a major league outfielder is just not acceptable. And when you consider they have a bunch of young guys who need at bats and can play OF, the decision to retain Cave is even more puzzling.

Twins Front Office Getting Burnt on Both Ends
LewFordLives replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I understand the concern about long term deals on pitching, but that's the only way they're going to be able to sign anyone of the caliber as Berrios. And it's not like the deal he got from Toronto was the kind that could sink the franchise. I get that they're not going to splurge $40 million per year for guys like Scherzer, but Berrios is going to make less per year than Donaldson. Mauer's $23 million per year was close to dead money towards the end, but it would be tough to argue that it prevented the Twins from pursuing other free agents or contract extensions. If they will only give short term deals to pitchers it's going to be more JA Happ, Homer Bailey, Schoemaker, Rich Hill...etc..- 27 replies

"But let's now see what they do with the financial flexibility."-Wolfson JA Happ anyone? It was a bad trade then, and it looks even worse now. People keep harping about how the Twins walked away with a haul, but this team needs pitching. Woods-Richardson is a project. Martin might be closer to a sure thing, but his value added to this organization does not make up for the loss of Berrios. This is a frustrating day to be a Twins fan.
-
Nice article, but I don't see any point in bringing Cruz back. The reality is this club will most likely not be playoff bound in 2022, so no need to shell out money for Cruz. The same could be said for some of the starters listed in the article. How many good years do Scherzer and Greinke have left? If you think it's only one or two, then there's no point in bringing them aboard for big $$$ for another fight for the bottom of the AL central. 2022 will be about seeing which of the younger guys can play at an MLB level.
-
Nice article. Other than locking up Buxton, there is no reason the Twins should be spending big $$$ this offseason. With the loss of Berrios and Maeda, 2022 will be a tryout camp for the starting rotation. It makes more sense for the Twins to be active in free agency during the 2022-2023 offseason. I especially don't think they should be locking up a SS long-term when they have some legit possible in-house candidates.
