    For those wishing for a reunion with Denard Span, I think there is a 0.0001 percent chance of that happening. Can he even play cf anymore? He's 32 and recovering from hip surgery. I find it telling that the Nats wouldn't make him a qualifying offer. And from Span's point of view, this is probably his last chance at a multiyear deal, which I don't think would fit in with the Twins long run plans. I suspect the Twins will stay with their internal options.

    No strong disagreements with your list, although It'll be hard to stand pat on a starting rotation that is among the worst in baseball. As of now it's Hughes and a big bag full of question marks.

    I completely disagree. The All-Star game is for the fans, and there are fans in Minneapolis and Kansas City who love their teams just as much as fans in New York and Boston. We deserve to see our favorite players too. I remember staying up late when I was 10 to see if Twins representative Dave Engle would get into the game back in 1984 (he didn't). The fact that other more deserving players get crowded out has no real impact on the outcome of the game. The managers have difficulty getting everyone into the game as it is. We're talking about guys who may only come in as a late defensive replacement or pinch runner. I just don't get why this issue pops up every year. Allowing each team to have at least one representative is really not asking that much.

    What's really sad about the purge that occurred that year is that the Twins got absolutely nothing in return (ok...with the exception of Ron Coomer). Klingenbeck actually pitched a good game against the Twins right before the trade. The front office must have made their decision based on that one game. Unfortunately, it was probably the only quality start he ever made. That was a bad year for Terry Ryan.

    In retrospect, I think some of the pummeling RD has taken from Twins fans over the years has been misplaced. Many relief pitchers can't make the transition to closer. This was clear with Davis early on, yet the Twins kept sending him out there almost every night with the game on the line because they had no one else. If anything, RD's failures speak to the overall failure of the bullpen in 1984.

    Another reason McCarty's stint with the Twins was so disappointing is that he was viewed as the heir apparant at first base. When Hrbek's body finally told him it was time to retire, it left a void at first until Morneau arrived.

    Mike Lamb, Rondell White, and of course NISHIOKA! In terms of dollars committed and total futility is there any more deserving to be on the list than these three?

    Didn't the Twins also trade Kevin Tapani that year to the Dodgers for Jose Parra? Another bad trade, although I think we also ended up with Coomer in the deal. Gotta add Mike Lamb to the Worst Twins list. Others were just as futile, but not for that kind of money.

    By my count, with the addition of Pelfrey the 40 man roster is now full. I don't see them going after any more starting pitching unless that person is willing to sign a minor league contract. Assuming Pelfrey is ready to go by April, that leaves only one spot in the rotation for DeVries/Deduno/Blackburn et. al. Jerrjens is the only one I can think of that might be available on a minor league deal, but even that's unlikely in this market.
